ECA 2011 Degree Show – Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh (UK) – 11-19 Juin 2011
The philosophy of the Jewellery and Silversmithing department is balancing innovation with old and new approaches to traditional craft techniques. Our objective is to design and create personal and individual work that integrates ‘thought’ and ‘practice’ sharing a common sensitivity to the complex relationships that humans form for objects.
Studio work can be made with a wide range of materials, from precious or semi-precious metals and gemstones, to plastics, wood, paper, stone and textile. These materials are bound together through thoughtful and intense periods of studio-based practice underpinned by an ethos of experimentation, innovation and passion.
We support a reflective understanding of the subject within the contexts of contemporary society and its wider industry – to this end the department embraces working with new technology alongside traditional time-honoured techniques and processes.
Jewellery and Silversmithing at Edinburgh College of Art is managed by a dedicated team of staff, both full- and part-time, who are active in their own professional practice and all of whom have a high profile both nationally and internationally.

Highlights of the Edinburgh College of Art Degree Show 2011 include:
Jewellery Japanese designer Mariko Sumioka takes her inspiration from elements of traditional Japanese architecture such as linear forms, geometric shapes and natural materials’ colours and texture. Her materials are solid, but the structure of her jewellery is very flexible in order to follow a body line naturally. Mariko has also collaborated with Costume graduate Ilona Russell.
