EXPO ‘MELANIE ISVERDING – Hide n’ seek’ – Galerie Rob Koudjis, Amsterdam (NL) – 22 Oct.-3 Dec. 2011
FrontRoom: MELANIE ISVERDING Hide n’ seek
Melanie Isverding makes mysterious jewellery. Her seemingly abstract shapes instantly make the imagination shoot sparks. Contrasts like freedom and control or movement and order are simultaneously manifest. Sometimes nature seems to be the source of inspiration, but this is contradicted by the reduced shapes and mathematical regularity. Nor is it clear whether a different scale is being suggested – might we interpret these pieces as a sort of spaceships? – or is the power of expression produced by their actual size?
There is lot to be said for the last option: each brooch or necklace has a construction that is as meticulous as it is refined. The finish of every surface has been carefully considered: polished, burnished, lacquered, coloured; several, mostly half-hidden, parts are covered with pulverized gemstones. Surprisingly enough, despite all this careful craftsmanship, there always remains something inexplicable to each piece. With this work Melanie Isverding adds a remarkably different approach to the vernacular of autonomous jewellery. (Ward Schrijver © Galerie Rob Koudijs )
