Klassiker der Schmuck 2012
Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen, Deutschland

This year there will be a retrospective exhibition of the work of a « Modern Classic » designer. In 2012 the chosen designer is the German goldsmith Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen. Together with Francesco Pavan, Lorenzen was the first goldsmith to be awarded the Herbert Hofmann Prize, back in 1973. The award presentation ceremony, which this year is being held on Saturday, 17 March 2012, is always one of the highlights at SCHMUCK. Lorenzen, who was born in 1942 in Hagen, Westphalia, taught at the « Staatliche Zeichenakadamie » in Hanau from 1974 to 1985, while also acting as a visiting lecturer at the « Hochschule für Gestaltung » in Pforzheim, at which college he then, in 1985, took up an appointment as a professor. He continued to teach there in the jewellery design department until retiring in 2008.

Each year since 2006 the exhibition has been hosted in a range of countries, among them Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (Municipal Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua), the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York) and the French town of Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor).

“Schmuck-Show 2012” is a jewellery presentation with professional models, set in an exceptional light and sound design. With the cooperation of several artists who exhibit their works at different places in Munich during these ‘Jewellery Days’, on the evening before the start of the trade fair jewellery is being presented directly on the body. The jewellery stirs emotions and prompts diverse conversations. At the bar, artists, jewellery lovers and laymen meet; there is room for an animated exchange. The project has been initiated by Olga Zobel Biro

The Sound of Silver & Brooches para las Chicas, Students of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp.

‘The Sound of Silver’ is a multimedia project that can be seen and heard.
Scrap material generously offered by the German silver manufacturer Robbe & Berking has been recycled by 30 students of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. The students were guided by Gisbert Stach, during a 5 days’ workshop. Tom De Cock, freelance percussionist guided the students in the world of sound. Adriaan Severins has recorded and edited the sound of the objects made by the students, silver plated by Robbe & Berking.

SCHMUCK 2012-

Brooches para las Chicas is the third edition of an academic project by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
Students of the 2nd and 3rd bachelor courses at the jewellery department were asked to design and produce ornaments for a specific person. Past editions of the project have seen Walter Van Beirendonck, Marnick Smessaert, Anita Evenepoel and Marjan Unger portraying rings and necklaces produced by the Academy’s students.

This year the academy invited Surinam-born designer and jewellery artist Chequita Nahar and myself (Valeria Vallarta Siemelink) to commission the students to create a type of ornament that we both have found alluring and at the same time, foreign to our habitual choice of jewellery : brooches. Brooches are one the oldest type of jewellery and they are among the most frequently produced ornaments by contemporary jewelers : their possibilities are almost endless and its prominent area of display makes the brooch a remarkable media for communication. The students were challenged to produce brooches that would help us, commissioners, to become acquainted with the use of these ornaments and that could establish a relation with the geo-cultural area we come from, Latin America, and the place where we live now : Europe. Designing for another person starts at the Academy as an exercise that students will have to master through their entire careers as professional jewellery makers. Their ideas, experience and talents are faced with the tastes, dislikes and demands of someone they come to know through a few working sessions. This results in a great opportunity for the students to acquire real-life experience and for the audience to be treated with the promise of surprising young talents.

EXPO « White – Gold – Porcelain » – Ariane Hartmann Werkstattgalerie, Hagen (DE) – 11 Mars-28 Avr. 2012

The words WHITE – GOLD – CHINA build an associative chain. Each term generates its own memories. The achromatic color white stands for purity – innocence – virginity – infinity.

EXPO
Gold, the noble metal with his unique flair – wealth.

Porcelain – the white gold is a special material in contemporary jewelry. The unusual technique to burn china with silver, chains to be made of porcelain and the virtuosity of the ramification in silver.

Anna Kiryakova (BG), Violaine Ulmer (F) and Zwetelina Alexieva (BG) show works on the subject at Ariane Hartmann workshop gallery of contemporary jewelery and design.
