Mia Maljojoki: Aurora
AURORA: New Jewelry by Mia Maljojoki (click to see more about this show)

Aurora (plural: auroras or aurorae) is a natural light display in the sky particularly in high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere. ( Wikipedia )

The recent increase in solar storms of the last few weeks has created some of the largest and most dramatic aurora displays in years. Mia speaks of the aurora borealis as a comforting and reassuring presence in the night sky. Her new jewelry pieces reflect the forms and colors of this ghostly and beautiful phenomenon.
Mia Maljojoki is originally from Finland and is now based in Munich. She received her BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston and subsequently studied at the famed Akademie der Bildenden Künst in Munich with Otto Künsli. In 2010 Mia Maljojoki received the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Award for outstanding artistic achievement in jewelry.

Artist statement:
For this series, I have worked with textiles to capture color and movement in object form. Through an iterative process of dyeing, sewing, painting, stitching, and dipping simple fabrics are transformed into ephemeral yet wearable skyscapes of hue and shade.

EXPO ‘Cluster’ – The Dowse, Lower Hutt (New Zealand) – 11 Fevr.-13 Mai 2012

Cluster presents work by ten contemporary New Zealand jewellers collected by The Dowse over the last ten years.

Lisa Walker, Karl Fritsch, Kirsten Haydon, Joanna Campbell, Jacqui Chan, Anna Wallis, Lynn Kelly, Jason Hall, Ann Visser Cox and Pauline Bern use a diverse range of materials as they challenge traditional notions of body adornment. The exhibition showcases the evolution of contemporary jewellery practice during that past decade and presents a wide range of object making. Unbounded by the traditions of jewellery and its conventional association with precious materials, wearability and the relationship to the body, these artists forge new directions in their work.

EXPO ‘Diamonds and Dead Things’ – Galeria Articula, Lisboa (Portugal) – 14 Avril-12 Mai 2012

Exhibition: Diamonds and Dead Things
Works by Kelly McCallum and Märta Mattsson
Opening night Saturday 14th of April

EXPO 'Diamonds and Dead Things' - Galeria Articula, Lisboa (Portugal) - 14 Avril-12 Mai 2012 dans Exposition/Exhibition diamonds+&+dead+things

“Art is far too important to be taken seriously”

Diamonds and Dead things is the brain child of Kelly McCallum and Märta Mattsson.
A constantly evolving project in which anything goes and everything is possible.

D&D is not a straightforward collaboration of ideas or a way to share the making of pieces, but an opportunity to throw caution to the wind and to create work in which each artist does not always have complete control.
It’s about constructing opportunities for creative play, to search for the magical in the unexpected and to allow two creative minds free reign to explore all that is possible.
