A Sense of Place: New Jewellery from Northern Lands

This exhibition explores the relationship contemporary jewellers have with their environment. Six nations are involved in the project, each at the northern edge of European jewellery practice, and each with their own individual cultural histories and heritage.

As part of a doctorate research project, sixteen emerging, and established, jewellers from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Scotland were asked to make two new works. The first piece was informed by a box of collected objects and materials that each artist gathered from an environment which is significant to them. This collection became a research process towards their tangible interpretation of place.

These ‘Topophilia’ (love of a place) boxes were then swapped, anonymously and at random, for another artist’s box that formed the stimuli for the second piece of jewellery. The work is displayed in pairs alongside the corresponding box of source materials illustrating the different approaches taken by artists with the same stimuli. Visitors can compare how the artist’s work is affected by working from the objects they have chosen and from objects that have been selected by someone else.

The collections in the boxes and the finished work are poetic responses to feelings of belonging through the language of making. This project is a celebration of our cultural links through our lived experience of our environment; cementing the bonds of cultural identity through collected and crafted material objects and forming new connections to our place in the world.

« At first there is a thought, a very vivid, three-dimensional thought of a form, a room that I can go into. I explore it and let it enchant me. I would like to grasp and experience it over and over again. The form is very complex, built of different colours, structures shapes and scents and depending from where I look, everything changes.
I have to make decisions, reduce it to the essentials and find a way for a logical realization in order to give the construct of my thoughts, which is by no means logical, a place in this world of tangible things. I focus myself on one kind of material, one or two colours; everything else distracts me and redirects my thoughts. I capture the three-dimensional form that spreads out in front of my inner eye, unfold it to the second dimension, sketch it and cut it out with the awareness that every cut is a final one. The cut out drawing lies in front of me, one flat piece, my unfolded thought. I bend and fold it to the third dimension. I’m excited to see if it really grows the way that I’ve imagined. Darcy Miro‘s metal forms in sterling silver, bronze and 18kt gold are a melding of her highly evolved metalsmithing skills and a love for the organic. Her mixed metal cuffs, rings, bracelets and earrings are formed through techniques such as piercing and constructing collage-like forms. Her work references nature, architecture and the body with the relationships explained by the artist in this way: « I think the connections between people, their creations and nature is a flow, which I am capturing. »

Miro is inspired by closely observing nature and archaeology…an event as simple as watching ants bore holes in a piece of dead wood or noticing a pile of leaves decaying. As she says, « I observe the tiniest of incidents, translating the information from tools to wax. » After carving individual pieces in wax the parts are cast in metal and then joined and assembled. Finally, the work is buffed, polished, pickled, or undergoes other processes to add color, durability and texture.

Objective
The preservation of worldwide cultural heritage, the reassessment of symbol bearers, the creation of new traditions, the revival of old traditions in a new form.  These last two years inspiration was to be found in jewellery from traditional costume traditions (2006)  and symbols of faith (2007) 2008 symbols of Intimacy

This year (2012) participants are invited to design a piece of jewellery based on a new theme: ‘NEW NOMADS’

New Traditional Jewellery 2012: international design contest and exhibition. For the 2012 design contest and exhibition the professional jury of New Traditional Jewellery (NTJ) has chosen the theme ‘NEW NOMADS’, because both literally and figuratively this theme offers many possibilities for inspiration. The history of jewellery is as old as mankind. While people went in search of parts with the best living conditions they carried their valuables with them, wearing them on their bodies. Jewellery that represents economic and social status, as it still does nowadays in the case of nomadic tribes.

The dissemination of religions went hand in hand with an unprecedented range of religious jewellery and ornaments, ranging from small containers for religious texts to reliquaries and portable altars. To this day, jewellery made of stable materials like gold and gems is the guarantee for your ‘ticket home’ in times of crises or when you have to flee from high-risk areas. Due to the global financial crisis prices of this so-called ‘flight gold’ have skyrocketed. Is there an alternative? Nowadays there are quite different streams of migrants but the principle is the same: people in search of parts with better living conditions. The whole world is on the move, from refugees to tourists, from emigrants to employees of multinationals. And you don’t even have to get up from your chair: Skype e.g. has made videoconferencing into a social medium.

NTJ asks contemporary professional jewellery designers to build bridges between the traditional jewellery of e.g. nomads, pilgrims, explorers, globetrotters, refugees or colonists and possible symbols bearers representing the mobility of the ‘NEW NOMADS’. On behalf of the technical jury, the executive committee of the jury and NTJ wishes all participants much inspiration and success!

TERMS AND CONDITIONS NEW TRADITIONAL JEWELLERY 2012
The group of potential contestants is distinguished into two categories:
Category A : established jewellery artists and silverdesigners
Category B : final-year and advanced students of all art academies and fourth-level students of the gold
and/or silversmith disciplines of training colleges, or comparable levels of part time education
or evening classes
v   Each participant may submit only one finished piece of jewellery
v  The ornament should be wearable, the parcel can not be more then 2 kilo’s.
v  The designs may not have been exhibited before nor seen/sold by third parties. Only ornaments made
v  specifically for this contest will be eligible for nomination.
v  Apart from the design the participant is also expected to supply an explanation of the underlying idea,
v  an inspirational text (no more than 15 lines) and a photograph of the source of inspiration, high resolution (330dpi, min. 15 x 15 cm)
v  All nominated designs will remain in the possession of the organization during all exhibitions and will
v  not be returned for the duration (2.5 years at the most)

v  Payment of registration fee; before 1 June 2012
v  Fully completed design form by email before 1 June 2012
v  By handing in the design form the contestant assures the organization of having designed and made
v  the design himself/herself and that he/she has not submitted the designs to other design contests

EXPO ’1X1 collective’ – Vander A Gallery, Bruxelles (BE) – 31 Mai-30 Juin 2012

1×1 Collective is a project born in Florence in 2010 to promote and diffuse contemporary art jewelry through exhibitions, fairs, and events. It is an open and ever-changing collective of independent jewelry artists.

Artistic and technical research and the freedom of experimentation make the jewelry gain new functions and meanings.

For this exhibition at vander A gallery in Brussels, they present 8 international artists, very different one from the other, all met in Alchimia school, Florence, wellknowned for its experimental jewellery and design schollarship.

1X1 collective1×1 Collective is open to collaborations, in the jewelry field as outside, to find new ways for showing original works to a wider public.
1×1 Collective changes its shape, leader and location following each project. It is an informal group of people based on active involvement, cooperation and sharing of ideas, knowledge and skills for the common goal of understanding and being understood.
For this exhibition there is not a theme because they want to focus on each artist’s personal approach and research, they believe that each one’s individuality and autonomy is one of the strenght of contemporary art jewelry and that it gets highlighted through the free dialogue of a collective exposition.

“Since several years I’m busy with collecting plastic caps, which were primarily intended for a large-sized object.
When it became clear that a realisation of this project is not possible because of taking far too much time, I started to research about new methods of converting my, in the meantime (because my whole surrounding helped to collect) immense accumulation of caps.
The caps itself are fascinating already by all their versatile colours, sizes, different transparency gradations, printings and reliefs, but not until the possibility of fusing, they appear in a new and fresh expression, away from their recognizable origin.
The process hereby is the most exciting and it’s surprising once again to see them change, fuse or observe their entire transformation. To see how the print curls, how transparent becomes opaque or the other way around, how a new structure or relief or complete new shape appear by heating and how different colours assemble in a new shape.
It is difficult to manipulate this process, in a way it goes by itself, and the appearance of the results are diverse and astonishing each time.”

The  daring trends, which have  emerged from the last VicenzaOro Exhibition, encourage us to abandon  tradition for the new proposals of the contemporary jewel, which are in constant evolution.
Infact, the creation af a  jewel  is not based on any clear models, but it is the result of a  continuous research and testing.

« - How is it that a color is able to evoke the sensations of has? And how does weight, not touched, not carried, trigger a strengthening of our muscles? And why would a visible, endless repetition of handling stretch the notion of time, and have a sound to it, and a rhythm still active after the work has ended?
How can remnants of process be froze in the memory of surfaces and bring back a sense of movement?
How can we feel the pulling and stitching in our hands, how does the process of crafting work enable our hands to think, or is it the hand at work which informs our thinking?
The unconscious recognition of tactility, sound, size, smell and temperature of environments is what allows us to differentiate one context from another.
These contexts are filled with the event-ness of material: materials in conversation with each other, striking up conversations.
How do I make sense of my surroundings and how do I sense it?
The intermingling and exchange of senses, conscious and unconscious are the construction elements of what I make of a visual encounter.
The puzzling together, and being puzzled, this process of making sense is what I am interested in.
I avoid the need to make sense of an object instantly, the event should not be linear, but rather gather around, departing and reentering the encounter with the objects.
The embodiments of objects are the sensation I try to find in the uttermost silence – in the presence of work.
The event should be work not consumption.
