Schmuck 2013 – EXPO ‘Classic of the Modern : Warwick Freeman’ – Munich (DE)

Klassiker der Schmuck 2013
Warwick Freeman , New Zeland
Each year at this special exhibition one designer is honoured in a retrospective called « Classic of the Modern ». This time it´s the turn of New Zealand designer Warwick Freeman. His pieces are characterised by a reduced, very clear idiom and a particular reference to natural forms.

« Warwick Freeman makes jewellery that has an air of distilled simplicity, a considered response to the imagery and aesthetic of our collective culture, jewellery that speaks about the complexities of living in Aotearoa New Zealand. » (The Arts FoundationWarwick Freeman biography available too)

Schmuck 2013 – EXPO 'This is where they met' - Platina at Frame, Neue Messe Munchen, Munich (DE) - 6-12 mars 2013 dans Adam GRINOVICH (SE) 2cd4940625bdbf702de40ee1db72a4baJewellery Sessions offers an online platform for artists from different disciplines. It aims at starting a dialogue, sharing thoughts, exchanging visions and collaborating freely. Hereby focusing on the synergy between a photograph, a piece of furniture, an installation, a jewellery piece, other artworks, and the way these artforms come together through extended research.
The visual, how you see things, how you approach them, how you view them from various perspectives, is a common denominator in how we work with contemporary jewellery today. In fact, we (from our discipline) are mostly interested in people; in things people create, why they create it, who is interested in it, and how people live with exceptional products of individual makers. Jewellery Sessions sets out to contribute to current debates of the notion of contemporary jewellery today as an artform, and its impact in the discourse of visual art and design. Within this context we present a platform for experimentation, reflection, discussion and display, to become more flexible and interconnected.
For Jewellery Sessions 2013, contemporary jewellery artists /artist groups are invited from Europe, Japan, U.S. , Latin America, … to join. In collaboration with a photographer, with similar artistic visions, these invited jewellery artists work towards a photograph. The image shows a narrative view on jewellery and should represent more than a profile as for example in a catalogue. The project is an artist initiative to investigate in and reflect on « crossover thinking » in applied and visual arts and a research in different forms of presentation or display of contemporary jewellery.

EXPO ‘Terhi Tolvanen: Curiosity Collection’ – Galerie Rob Koudijs, Amsterdam (NL) – 2 Mars-13 Avril 2013

Classé dans : Exposition/Exhibition,Gal. Rob Koudijs (NL),Hollande (NL),Terhi TOLVANEN (NL) — bijoucontemporain @ 17:51

Terhi Tolvanen: Curiosity Collection
Collecting appears to be one of mankind’s irrepressible urges. Hundreds of years ago it manifested itself in Italian ‘Studioli’, German ‘Wunderkammer’, and Dutch ‘Cabinets of curiosities’. In these rooms inquisitiveness and astonishment merged with beauty, religion and superstition. In the Museum Boerhaave, in the Dutch city of Leiden, you can still see how seventeenth century scientific collections were arranged in decorative patterns.

Terhi Tovanen is part of this tradition, but she holds a rather unusual position. She too is fascinated by nature and collects objects for their beauty and curiosity, yet she does not safeguard her treasures in drawers. Tolvanen uses them as points of departure for making jewellery pieces that are as mysterious as they are wondrous. It is as if she breathes life into the magic that used to linger in the Wunderkammer in days gone by. Her new work explicitly refers to these old collections made up from shells, pearls, coral and insects like butterflies and beetles. The respect with which she applies these materials, bridges past and present, nature and culture. Each piece tells the story of an unique, intuitive search.
The future owners of Tovanen’s work will in their turn be bewildered, just like their historic predecessors, and place their jewel – when it is not worn – in the next, their own collection. In this way people try to come to grips with the world, the creation and human creativity.

On ordinary days… KAORI JUZU

On ordinary days…
I aspire to work simply for the sake of inspiration, before mind starts to eat the joy from inspiration. The making of jewellery is a totally open process where shapes, colours and size meet, interact and affect each other. Hand, metal and enamel are in a constant dialogue. In this intensive process layers of colour are built up until such moment: like the moon gleaming on water – soft lifting, serene, subdued, yet strong enough to have inherited a life as well as a form. No longer me. Not a bad thing on ordinary days.
