Mirla Fernandes – Retrospectiva – 12 años de trabajo
“My body, your body” is a 12 years retrospective exhibition of Brazilian artist Mirla Fernandes that will open at Galeria Amaranto (Barcelona), in October 17th.
The curator Ana Paula de Campos has selected works where the jewel is an object of mediation between the artist and the other. According to Campos, the selection of works “subverts the decorative emphasis of the jewelry designed for a body as a vitrine, evoking more provocative ways of understanding both jewelry and the body itself.”
The exhibition encompasses “Eu sou a medida” (I am the measure), a series of works from 2000, when, for the first time, the artist started to use her own body as mold and measure, relinquishing the use of traditional tools and techniques of goldsmithing in favor of the singularization of the pieces. Doing so she makes explicit by contrast the “character of the encounter, mediated by the jewel, between the artist and who risk using it” as states Campos .
There will be also present some works of Longing for the Body series, presented at her individual at Gallery Biró and Schmuck 2005. In this series, the pieces evoke the role of jewel as a mediator of sensorial experiences once they “disrupt the traditional structures of occupation in the body and use of jewelry through pieces that turn the viewer and wearer into active and interactive subjects, so becoming evident the collective essence of jewelry, and especially, its power to articulate new relations, consciousness and communication abilities.”
At last “Cetro”(Scepter) is presented. This interactive on going work is the result of her more recent researches that combines her martial practices in Aikido with the contemporary artistic thinking. The work is constituted by hundreds of ceramic pieces that are offered to the spectator who in return offers a photograph (taken in the gallery) with the piece to the artist, reinforcing in this way the trade relationship that exists between artist-audience and the flexible and inquisitive aspect of Fernandes’ body of works.
