The « Jewellery by Speckner and Spoerri » exhibition juxtaposes radically different pieces of jewellery. He has his garish, humorous and sometimes sarcastic creations produced in manufactories, whereas she places emphasis on handcrafting her inconspicuous and enigmatic yet dynamic pieces herself. Acquaintances from earlier days in Munich, these two artists also share an almost animist love for materials and objects, from which they create small yet self-contained, autonomous worlds. In addition, both are passionate flea market visitors, trying to find the meaning behind the material as such.
Bettina Speckner’s jewellery invites us to pause for a while and figure out the stories behind the images. Her pieces encourage us to approach them, while at the same time admonishing us to handle them with care. They are delicate little helpers for interrupting our daily routine by turning our attention to them and lingering for more than just a fleeting moment.
When Daniel Spoerri creates jewellery, he transforms something trivial or repellent into something bizarre or even disquieting by implementing it in a precious material, such as bronze, silver or gold. But usually, the shock is alleviated by a dash of irony. One brooch, although featuring defensive stag beetle pincers on two sides, is a perfectly symmetrical piece with a classically austere shape. In addition to »wearable« pieces of jewellery, the exhibition presents small sculptures created by Spoerri.
