» Marry Ted Noten’ – that’s not an easy task. Yet, as a sequel to ‘Ring for the Lords’ (Walter Van Beirendonck and Marnick Smessaert),‘Jewels for the Ladies’ (Anita Evenepoel and Marjan Unger), ‘Brooches para las Chicas’ (Chequita Nahar and Valeria Vallarta Siemelink) this year ‘Marry Ted Noten’ was the 4th edition of an ongoing jewellery project by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Students of the 2nd and 3rd year Bachelor courses at the Jewellery Design & Silversmithing department were asked to design a wedding ring for Theodorus Johannes Maria Noten and his girlfriend Clemence-Marie van Lieshout.
Designing a piece of jewellery for a client is an aspect of the work of a goldsmith that is often dismissed in the field of contemporary jewellery. It is the challenge of today’s goldsmith to take his own freedom within the parameters set by a client. A wedding ring might look like a rather non-challenging subject. However knowing that Clemy holds on to a golden traditional wedding ring unconditionally, while Ted  loathes tradition, made it a quest indeed. The students had to explore wedding rituals and they had to deal with two conflicting demands.
Ted, the bad boy of jewellery design, and Clemy a teacher and dean at Hogeschool ‘s-Hertogenbosch are a couple for almost 20 years. Getting married is an issue that pops up every now and then, but both have their own conditions and both are rather pert.
The deal was this: if one of the students was able to design an unprecedented wedding ring, an outstanding example which would pass the test to be chosen by Ted as well as by Clemy independently and unaware of each others choices, they would marry indeed.
Among the different conceptual designs of the Antwerp students, Ted and Clemy choose a ring with a twist. A saucy thing, made from readymade materials, two coupling heads that fix the lovers forever.
Students, and heroes engaged in a fairy tale, one of the students passed the test; our heroes chose one and the same design. The rings have been engraved and are gilded. The photos are proof of the story’s happy ending….«   Liesbeth den Besten
