From March 28 until April 19, 2014 Art Gallery PUTTI will host solo exhibition of Norvegian contemporary jewellery artist Felieke van der Leest – „ZOO is life”.

Contemporary jewelry artist Felieke van der Leest in her artworks uses such techniques as knitting, crocheting, and beading – using special, extremely fine yarns and tailor-made needles and hooks. Connecting the precious metals with textiles and toy animals, the artist creates a witty, attractive and colorful jewelry that brings out a smile and leaves no spectator indifferent.
“When I work with colors, I feel like an artist when I am working with metal, I feel like a constructor , and when I am working with toys , I feel like a child, ” the artist comments on her creative process.
Plastic fish, seals, bears, giraffes, elephants, gorillas, dogs, birds and other animals live in the author’s works of art. Toys are dressed up, cut and assembled, decorated and adorned. Transforming then both visually and conceptually, the artist manages to get them incorporate in her surreal world, discovering a new life for them.

“I think my work rather be called wearable sculptures rather than jewelry, ” the artist explains.
Despite the witty approach to the jewelry making, Felieke, with her work also touches upon such social and serious issues as animal rights and environmental protection.
“Often the carriers of my jewelry tell me stories about my artwork that I would not have been able to see in my jewelry, “explains Felieke.
Felieke van der Leest was born and raised in the Netherlands, but since 2008 lives in West Norway. She got her jewerer diploma in 1996 when she graduated from the Jewelry Department at Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. For several years, the international and conceptual professional contemporary jewelry artists’ society the work of Felieke van der Leest is very highly valued and appreciated; it can be found in museums and private collections around the world.

Giovanni Sicuro, Italy 1st Prize Series of rings:  „Bianchi Untitled 1-3“, Agate, gold

« The effect of the rings fascinated the Jury; at first glance they are classic pieces of jewellery but the material used irritates the observer, awaking curiosity. The simple, white agate does not look like stone but rather like ivory or plastic. Only when touched is the cool, hardness of stone revealed and on closer inspection the concept of the pieces is exposed. A traditional ring is reversed here; the entire body of the ring is cut from a layer of white agate concealing the gold band. The stone is not reduced to being a decorative accessory but forms the defining element, which through exceptional craftsmanship replicates ‘traditional’ ring stones. This subtle play with the expectations of traditional ring design and with the notion of agate as a stone which is valued for its pattern or colour, won over the Jury unanimously. »

« This object, made from wood and agate sticks, impressed the jury with its archaic expression. Its effect is earthy, as if it came from the distant past but at the same time it is very contemporary. The piece works on completely different levels, awakens associations and memories, from a piece of agricultural equipment to an instrument of torture, depending on the viewer’s experiences. This multidimensionality earned it second place from the jury.« 

Typhaine Le  Monnier, France 3rd Prize Necklace: Agate, elastic band

« The unusual combination of materials in this necklace delighted the jury. The elastic band is reminiscent of a brassiere strap; a very feminine element, which however remains mostly unseen, hidden. Through its use in a classic neck adornment, the hidden is placed centre-stage, drawing the observer’s gaze upon itself. The soft material enters into a fascinating combination with the hard, cold stone exacerbated by the positioning of the supple band, designed for proximity to the body, on the outside and the distal stone next to the body. Through the choice of materials, the colour and the form of the agate the piece relates strongly to the body. The jury particularly highlighted the haptic quality of the jewellery; when worn the cool weight of the agate is felt on the neck but the stone nevertheless fits itself to the body and is very wearable. Beyond its function as a necklace, the jury explicitly commended the effect of the piece as an object »

a  contemporary exhibition in Tel-Aviv at Periscope Gallery, until the 31st of march .

This exhibition features contemporary jewelry makers, highlighting the artists’ personal forms of expression and their methods of creation. The work evokes questions of identity, self-definition, and the role of the jewelry maker as a craftsman, integrating his or her professional skills and practice with a personal philosophy of art making.

the very concept of « Common Language » presented by the Periscope gallery : young designers, newly graduated from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design and Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, share space with Jakob Bloch and Vered Babai, two recognized artists. Jean-Yves Le Mignot continues to pursue this dialogue by inviting 6 of the most representative French jewellers out of the last major exhibition held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, ‘Dans la ligne de mire’.
Contemporary jewellery talks about identity. No matter how coded, it is a language that transcends the spoken word and instigates an intimate rapport between the creator and his collector. A unique piece often has the power to transcend the aesthetic intent of the creator to become an even more powerful personal expression of the person who wears it.

Voilà, on pourrait parler d’un haiku. Tranquillité, douceur, paix, esthétique « naturelle », le chat Mimi approuve. Déjeuner, petits poissons, bulots, vin blanc. Soleil.Bien-être.

Et puis, montée « au nid » pour voir les bijoux. Même équilibre « déséquilibré », même paix, même douceur, entre le poli-doux des bois flottés et le reflet de perles, cachées, dans les gris-blancs. La mer lui donne, à Eliane, et elle le lui rend bien !

Chp … ? a été établi en 1996 par Gijs Bakker, designer et co-fondateur de DroogDesign, dans le but d’éditer des bijoux conceptuels de designers internationaux.
En privilégiant la préciosité de l’idée sur la valeur matérielle, le bijou devient bien plus qu’un simple accessoire décoratif. En montrant que le design de bijou évolue au même titre que n’importe quel autre discipline en design, CHP rempli un vide existant et rendant les designers de bijou plus largement accessible.
Chp… ? C’est une collection de bijoux de 56 designers tels que Gijs Bakker, Susanne Klemm, Bless, Marc Newson, Marcel Wanders, Campana Brothers, Ron Arad, Hannes Wettstein , et d’autres audacieux artistes du GROUPE  chp?… (Chi A Paura ?...)

« In the trilogy CANVAS CONTEXT CASH, presented for the first time in Munich as a cohesive work group, Karen Pontoppidan takes her stand in the non-ending debate on the relation between the free and applied arts, and particularly between painting/drawing on the one hand and the identity of the contemporary goldsmith on the other. Born in Kerteminde/Denmark, she has dealt with this topic time and again under a variety of headings in the course of her complex biographical trajectory and has in fact devoted her energies essentially to this problem to have her work resonate with it in a series of steps. Against the backdrop of her previous works her recent objects can be seen as a matured conclusion creating interstices of humour and irony and presenting a jewellery that renders the viewer thoughtful and yet never ceases to “clothe” the wearer.

CANVAS consists of geometrical bodies of wood wrapped in canvas and beset with jewellery quotes

like embossed ornaments, appliquéd medaillons or floral décor. Art and craft unite in a cheerful conspiracy.

CONTEXT fathoms out further possibilities of this terrain and reaches out for bolder forms –

in the way of a response to a rising trend that intends to eliminate all individual traits involved in the artistic process or as intrinsic elements of an artistic strategy. Pontoppidan commissions befriended painters to colour the interior of miniature boxes of industrial canvas, leaving the job of binding to other colleagues. The whole set consists of 99 objects and functions as a witty and enigmatic comment on a common practice in contemporary art.

CASH constitutes something like a concluding remark on the economic system associated with aesthetic behaviour. Art reveals itself more and more as a simple definition, dependant on things like context, success and the ambience, in which the individual objects are anchored.

 

Thus we find ourselves treading on an elastic ground generating value shifts and hybrid creatures.

Contemporary jewellery has become part of such a trend, involving positions that associate themselves with the general discourse of art and respond to it by means of an aesthetic language that is immanent to its material. Karen Pontoppidan’s work is one such voice. A jewellery artist with an absolutely avantgarde breeding, she worked from 2000 till 2006 as an assistant to Otto Künzli and since 2006 as a professor at the Konstfack in Stockholm. Although she mercilessly eradicates all traditionalistic temptations besetting jewellery art, although her work displays a strong proclivity towards things like absurdity, defamiliarization and play, she values her background in jewellery and the goldsmith’s craft, even though this is not always immediately visible.

Were that not the case, her “nasty” approach could never be quite so effective.

For the process involved in her work jewellery is subjected to a mysterious transformation, with

conceptual action and critical reflection on the one hand and aesthetic and ornamental recapitulation

on the other melting into a compact and handy form. »
