EXPO ‘SONTOB – Dinah Lee’ – La Basilica Gallery, Barcelona (ES) – 29 Mai- 8 Juill. 2014
SONTOB – La palabra coreana para « uña » (the Korean word for « nail »)
SONTOB by Dinah Lee / Exhibition Opening inauguration jeudi 29 mai à 19:00
« It will cut, scratch and pry yet will also chip, break and tear…the fingernail grows and grows, relentlessly, even for a brief (and creepy) time after death. »
SONTOB explores the simultaneity of the ancient and the modern, the superstitious and the scientific as viewed through contemporary jewelry. The investigation into the human hand as seen through Korean art and culture led to focus (and infatuate) on the fingernail. The rich, symbolic history as well as the enduring contemporary significance make the fingernail a complex proposition. The final forms are references to the hand gestures from 18th Century Korean paintings. By using the ‘fingernail’ shapes to render the abstracted fingers the pieces have a familiar yet unfamiliar reality to them. They exist in between machine made and organic, between high tech and antique, alien yet earthy.
