PREZIOSA is a cultural project designed and co-ordinated by “Le Arti Orafe”, since 1985 the most prestigious contemporary jewellery school in Italy.
The project, launched in 2005, has become one of the most important European events devoted to contemporary jewellery.
The conceptual quality, the presence of artists of international fame, the prestigious set-up, the elegant catalogues and the original formula that comprises the organisation of conferences with the artists taking part, make “Preziosa” an appointment that lovers of contemporary jewellery cannot afford to miss.
A country of exquisite jewellery traditions, Italy has no museum devoted to jewellery, and temporary exhibitions have always been rare.
The attention devoted by the communication media and the cultural institutions to initiatives devoted to this art form has – apart from a few shining exceptions – always been limited, while great interest has always been expressed by lovers of contemporary art.
Through the organisation of events such as PREZIOSA, the school wishes to help to fill a gap the discrepancy of which is more or less consciously acknowledged.
Since 2008, a « parallel » exibition for young artists is organized: PREZIOSA Young is already an international reference for new artists and goldsmiths

Each of the selected winners must present 5 to 10 pieces for the exhibition. These pieces must be the same (or similar) to those submitted for the selection

LUDUS GEMMARUM part II Exhibition
opening of the exhibition on 10th December at 7pm.
The exhibition, Ludus Gemmarum, showcases creative works by Lluís Comín and Montserrat Lacomba exploring themes of memory and landscape. A single collaborative brooch, ‘Trapped Cloud’, blends each artist’s unique aesthetic and unites the individual series of works on display. This piece is a synthesis of both worlds with fragments of nature and memory forming a composition with soft volumes and strong contrasts.
Lluís Comín presents ‘Mosaic de la Memòria’
“An attempt to reconstruct with crumbs of what we remember and feel; the memory as the symbol of what we are and of what we have to protect.”

Helen Britton @ Villa Bengel
Opening: 09 December 2014, 6:00 pm
Helen Britton says about her work: « That I make jewelry, drawings and paper objects and not buildings or gardens, allows me to create a very private world that accepts no compromises. To develop matter in itself, to transform it into an unpredictable way, comes from the love of materials, from the enjoyment of the simple qualities of color, texture, shape and their effect on my senses. I have always had an empathy with objects and in my practice in recent years, this specialized on collecting those awkward and sometimes ugly fragments, those hidden beauties and components that seem to be intended for a life as jewelry. I try to offer them a new opportunity, a chance to sing or to sing one last time. »
Helen Britton, invited as Artist in Residence at the Bengel Foundation in Idar-Oberstein, will be working in the Bengel Factory and at the University of Applied Sciences in Idar-Oberstein in October, November and December 2014.
Researching classic raw stone materials of this region and those transported here from her homeland Australia, along side the possibilities offered by the fashion jewellery making machines of the Bengel factory, Britton is laying down the foundations for a completely new body of work.

« This year the exhibition is characterized by innovative, very different works in glass, ceramics and jewellery as well as by a large selection of textiles. In addition to works that are inspired by nature – whether by plant forms or by the atmosphere and moods of the landscape – works are to be seen that are dealing with the city and try to translate its poetry and problems into a visual mode. The appeal of surfaces and the development of new techniques to enhance the range of possibilities resulted in very different works. Other topics are the definition and the meaning of home and country, problems of environmental protection and the relationship of new technical possibilities and traditional craftsmanship. The combination of various unusual ideas, of different conceptual and aesthetic approaches results in a very special and fascinating exhibition.
As in the last years, many applications arrived for Talente from the field of jewellery. The young artists show a special interest in the techniques and ideas of the collage. Impressive are the contributions of the students from Idar-Oberstein (Germany) working with and interpreting the material stone which results in very different works with diverse concerns but all of quite archaic character (Sharaeh Aghaei, Iran; Elvira Golombosi, Ukraine; Tala Yuan, China). The works deal with issues of homeland, strangeness and identity, the unconscious and magic forces being inherent to the objects as well as with the importance and the condition of civilization-creating elements in the present. All in all, this year again the general interest in the combination of different materials and for the connection of specially made parts and found objects is evident. These elements can be created into architecturally-style arrangements, extended into long tubes, combined with materials such as perspex glass or be gathered into subtle, poetic compositions. Besides the major inspiration from natural forms technical ideas play a significant rôle. Katie Collins (USA/Australia) for example works from steel collapsible necklaces and bracelets that present different stages and are inspired by machines. Unusual are Karin Gyllerfelt’s (Sweden) works in which photos of richly draped textiles are applied on metal surfaces causing a vexing trompe l’œil-effect. By means of technique and motifs she hints at the themes of transformation and transience. Jing Yang (China/Germany) deals in her « vases » not only with gender-based stereotypes of her native China, but also with the playful analysis of forms by dividing a vase shape into compartments reflecting in her pendants on the relationship of these parts. » (Klimt02)
TALENTE is an international competition for young craftsmen and women in design and technology. This special show reflects the ideas of young people in the context of an experimental approach to materials and craft techniques. The best entries are awarded the highly sought-after TALENTE prize.
Young artist working in the applied arts and technology will have the opportunity to show their work in the international competition TALENTE 2015 in Munich, Germany from 11th to 17th March 2015. The aim of TALENTE is to promote young people with a particular manual talent and to show an interested audience the enormous potential which lies in the new generation in crafts and trades.
