Katharina Dettar explains : « 2,1 grams- Gold has been man’s most sought-after quest for hundreds of years & the price of gold continues to rise. But gold deposits are ever thinner, & this precious metal is being extracted from the earth at enormous environmental & human cost, often in some of the poorest corners of the world. This gold ring weighs 2,1 grams.
Based on the data & information provided by the Dolaucothi Gold Mines in Wales the average quantity of ore to get 2,1 grams of 24ct gold is of a is of about 140 kg of quartzite. This quartzite has an high amount of iron in it where the gold dust finds itself located. In order to get the ore you need to extract 1400 kg of shale rock, therefore being the final numbers 1540 kg of spoil for a 2,1 grams ring of gold.
To obtain a small amount of gold tons of rock are dug up & sprinkled with diluted cyanide, which separates the gold from the rock. Some of the largest mines move up to half million tons of earth a day, leaching the poison into rivers & lakes.
2,1 grams is a visual metaphor that illustrates the huge disparity between a gold ring & the amount of material needed to create it.

Merci à elle d’avoir pris le temps d’éclairer ma lanterne !

"Amarrats a la mar" Montserrat Lacomba 2016

« My work is closely linked to nature, especially to the Mediterranean. The sea at Formentera gives me wide landscapes as well as small fragments, seemingly insignificant details that spur me to work, that cause me concern and a need to retain them forever. In this context I take home pleasant memories and photographic images that transform into jewelry, evoking fleeting moments or long periods of observation. Enamel is a technique I like to use because it is close to painting, though stones and other natural elements also help me express my admiration for the universe. The movement in the fishes, the lines of the posidonia, the curves of waves and drawings in the sand, along with the sea surface, the rocks, the colors of the sky and sea, and the shapes of branches are but some of the starting points. My wish is for the jewels to be used, keeping the mysterious moments alive and generating new memories, new feelings. » Montserrat Lacomba

DECOUVERTE/COUP de COEUR : Snem Yildirim

Classé dans : COUP DE COEUR,DECOUVERTE,JOYA (ES),Snem YILDIRIM (TR),Turquie (TR) — bijoucontemporain @ 20:29

Snem Yildirim have been selected for Joya Barcelona 2016 ….. and it’s a refreshing BLUE « coup de coeur » :-)

Joya 2016 - Snem Yildirim

« Snem Yildirim & Didem Yildirim sont deux soeurs, originaires de Turquie et créatrices du Studio Zigzag, installé à Istanbul et à Ankara depuis 2013.
Leur particularité ? Tester les matériaux et créer des ponts entre art contemporain et bijouterie, entre tradition et modernité. » (Studio Zigzag interview on lenvers-du-decor)

Studio Zigzag is an Istanbul based contemporary jewelry studio, founded by Snem Yıldırım & Didem Yıldırım in 2013.
« For us, it was a step to go out of the frame of modern times’ enforced life, to flee to the dream world … Once we started to discover the materials, materials recreated us with the designs formed by our dreams. »
« We essentially take inspiration from cultural texture and the geography we live in. We experience the materials and production techniques by blending the contrasts such as the east and the west, the local and the global, the traditional and the modern, the geometric and the organic. »

Born in Ankara, Turkey, in 1984.
She graduated from Gazi University, Department of Architecture, and in 2011 she started to study Architectural Design Master Program at Istanbul Bilgi University.
By Inout Project she produced several projects within the scope of city and public space.
She continued Leather Footwear and Accessories Design Program at Istanbul Moda Academy in partnership with the University of the Arts London.
In 2013 she set up her contemporary jewelry studio “Studio Zigzag” with her sister.
Currently, she works at her studio and is a member of Yaygara Contemporary Art Initiative.
