Meret Oppenheim 'sugar' Ring: Meret Oppenheim ‘sugar’ Ring – silver gold plated, sugar, synthetic corundum
« ‘I love natural materials. But everything man makes is nature, even plastic, even the atomic bomb,’ Meret Oppenheim observed in an interview with Valie Export in 1975. The sugar ring, which Meret Oppenheim designed in the mid-1930s, is an absurd and delightful combination of artifice and so-called nature, of opulent and cheap materials. The throwaway and frangible sugar cube is elevated to the status of a lasting, precious stone; an edible material is made wearable. At any time the wearer can exchange the cube for a fresh ‘jewel’. »

EXPO ‘Nomen Nescio’ – Piazza del carmine 29, Firenze (IT) – 2-3 Dec. 2016

Nomen Nescio

MFA GRADUATION SHOW - by  Carla Movia

Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School Florence

Opening 2 december 18:00-21:00

& 3 December 17:00-20:00

Nomen Nescio – Carla Movia

Nomen Nescio, from latin nomen-name and nescio-I don’t know, is an installation of 300 brooches, all made out of the same material – discarded tin cans.
It is the nameless and forgotten crowd that the jewellery artist Carla Movia addresses with her work, a reflection on stereotypes and prejudice.
100 trashed tin cans transformed into jewellery state that redemption is a possibility.
They are meant as a symbol of hope, the invisible and the rejected placed on the body and worn with pride to be noticed.
In this spirit, one series of brooches supports Oxfam Italia’s campaign Stand as One.
A percentage of the sales will be donated to give help and protection to the millions of people forced to flee conflict, disaster and poverty.
