« in the brooches « Memoria Aperta«  ………..  the artist effectively tests the value of the memories that bind everything and everyone. In this collection, ceramic animals, porcelain dolls, sculpted ivory shapes, woods, glass, miniatures of old photos—unearthed, inherited, and collected relics—are mixed in with incredible reproductions in lost wax of shoes, dresses, tiny tools of daily use, mini-bestiary, and gems. Paganin weaves her thick net of information on a sort of genetic algorithm in which everyone can find their reflection. Each brooch, every necklace starts a story. It’s up to us to choose the plots. »  (By Silvia Valenti on  AJF)

EXCHANGE-BIJOU 1 – Roxy Lentz – new works for spring …..

Roxy Lentz

« Conceptual art jewelry from re-purposed metal, wabi-sabi and organic nature. »
LOVE this WILD aspect of her jewelry !!! ……….

Some new work that will be at « Wild Women Wearable Art » and « One of a Kind« .  (One of a Kind, The Mart, Chicago, IllinoisThe 2nd annual Spring Show returns April 28-30!)

« I make my jewelry from metal I find at the thrift store, silver plate trays, brass and sometimes bits and pieces I find while on walks. There is always a bit of rusty bolts and stuff in the bottom of my purse! I love to transform something others thought had no value into wearable art jewelry, you should see what I do with PVC I find from the street. »

Roxy Lentz earrings - processRoxy Lentz Jewelry  – process – The earrings with the first fire patina. If I wanted to keep these just like this, I would have to use cold connections. But, for these earrings, I need to shape them and fuse the ends together, so, some of this will go.

Roxy Lentz earrings - processRoxy Lentz earrings – process – The finished earrings. I filed the edges, fused the ends with small bits of silver, and used a wire brush to put a sheen on the surface, and to remove the grime that happened when using the torch. Since I put the torch on the back side, I did preserve some of the beautiful « orange peel » on the front. Now, I could leave these like this, or take a chance and put them in a pickle pot to make them silvery. I like the patina, and I think my customers do too. That beautiful gold sheen on the right side of the right earring, it did it all on its own, that is why these are one of a kind, and uncommon jewelry for independent women.

Roxy Lentz - The finished earrings Roxy Lentz Jewelry  the finished flower earrings. I used silver wire to cold connect the flowers to their base to preserve the patina. You can see that the base metal of this bowl was brass, because of the soft gleam on the edge of the flowers. After soldering on the post I put the brass base in pickle to clean the post, then I put it in a rinse of hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar to clean the fire scale off the brass. Some more buffing with a brass wire brush on the flex shaft. The earrings are about 2 1/2 inch long, and 1 1/2 wide. There are some similar at In Tandem Gallery and Gaia in Winston Salem NC.

« SHADOWS collection, 2016, is the embodiment of a fantasy world populated with shadows, exotic birds, grotesque demons and fairies, an exploration of the aesthetic and literary values of such creatures and the real and symbolic nature of the shadow as an image and a figure.
We are aware of a tiny fraction of the thinking process that goes on in our minds, and we can control only a tiny part of our conscious thoughts. The vast majority of our thinking efforts go on subconsciously.
Thoughts like birds will always hover high in the sky but is our responsibility to prevent the ‘birds’ from landing in our minds. Those creatures become symbolic statements and represent obsessions, our ideas and fears or projections of our subconscious. Based on this approach, they are merely symbolic representations of human psychological states.«

Gemstone and Jewellery in Idar-Oberstein will be on exhibition at Inhorgenta, IHM and Eunique. Come and visit us !!!!

Julia Obermaier« My main subject is about private space. If someone is crossing the borders of my spaces without permission, it causes a bad feeling. I try to protect them as much as possible, but in daily life, one cannot always keep direct surroundings and personal space in their preferred way. Our outside world is always in relation with each other and our circumstances.
I create in my pieces rooms, containers, boxes or little caves. These spaces can be filled with ones own personal feelings, perceptions and sensations. I see my work as containers protecting the innermost emotions of the viewer or wearer, that they use to confront a busy world ».

Artist Statement
The extraordinary power of objects is obtained, because people believe in them. The more mundane the objects are, the more powerful they become.
My practice contextualizes the primitive energy that is submerged beneath the layers of garments. When the body is removed, the absence becomes an empty structure. The internal structure is evidence of human existence. It remains full of authentic spirit and fantasy.
Through the processes of deconstructing and reconstructing materials into symbolic forms, I uncover the hidden intimate and sensual power of humanity. It is a moment when ordinary objects become surreal and uncanny in order to redeem the socially constructed expectations and perceptions.

Meet the artists taking part in this year’s Munich Jewelry Week exhibition TIME PERCEPTION VOL.3.
Jelizaveta Suska
She was born in Latvia, where she completed her Bachelor degree education in Art Academy of Latvia as a metal designer. At the age of 24 she moved to Gothenburg in Sweden for studying and permanent living. In 2015 she graduated from Academy of Design and Crafts (HDK) at University of Gothenburg.
In year 2016 Jelizaveta received The Herbert Hofmann Prize, and Amber prize at Amberif Award.
‘Frozen Moment’ pieces are a lot about feelings of nostalgia, of a moment in time. In my work, I was looking for materialization of these abstract matters. I based it on associations and feelings. After a period of research, I came up with my own material that the pieces are made of. This material has two main compounds: polymer, that is light and transparent, just like ‘a moment’ and crushed marble, that creates an illusion of a solid stone which I associate with a feeling of nostalgia.
In the beginning of crafting each piece, material is hot and dynamic but in a while it turns still. Like a metaphor of a moment becoming a memory. When looking at my works, people often are saying that they look like ice or unknown minerals.
I question traditional approaches and instead of valuable jewels I celebrate the idea behind the material. That’s why for the rear of the brooches and other supporting details I use valuable metals like gold, gold plated silver and titanium.
In this project, I created more than 200 hundred pieces. I then selected 21 and crafted them into the jewelry.

EXCHANGE-BIJOU 1 – Rafael Luis ALVAREZ – KOSMOS en el Museo José Hernandez en Buenos Aires (Argentina) – 10 Fevr.-13 Mars 2017

Rafael Luis Alvarez (ARGENTINA)

COLECCIÓN KOSMOS,UNA COLECCION DE PINTURA, DIBUJOS, FOTOGRAFIA Y JOYERIA

Museo José Hernandez en Buenos Aires (Argentina)

Inauguracion Viernes 10 de febrero 2017 18:30 hs
Rafael Luis Alvarez - KOSMOS, UNA COLECCION DE PINTURA, DIBUJOS, FOTOGRAFIAY JOYERIA:

NIGHTLIGHT SKIN  STATEMENT
« Jonathan Hens’ striking work speaks of recent developments in today’s world, which has seen a fusion between the banal and the races/ cultures/ subcultures and becomes a place where men and women have merged into androgynous beings.
His designs are the result of an intense search for an alternative identity. Rather than a classic example of beauty, the viewer gets to see Hens’ interpretation of it. He chose the material pewter to create his signature, by engraving, pouncing and printing, he creates a new dimension to the material.
After researching different kinds of sub-and material-cultures/ religion/ races he started to experiment with skins. By confronting those materials together, we can translate it as an extension between all human society.
His dark look mirrors (or reflects) ‘the now’, a place where there is scope for experiment and self- expression. His atypical aesthetic has no truck with traditional techniques. Jonathan Hens creates a visual game between austere forms and a rough edge finish. His work raises many questions, such as what beauty means today and whether or not there is still a difference between the sexes/ humans/ religions and cultures.
Jonathan Hens’ work gives us greater insight into the diversity of our world. »
