EXPO ‘PIN 10 ANOS’ – Galeria de Arte Moderna Fernando Azevedo, Lisbon (PT) – 10 Sept.-3 Oct. 2014

Classé dans : Exposition/Exhibition,PIN (PT),Portugal (PT) — bijoucontemporain @ 0:31

PIN – PORTUGUESE ASSOCIATION FOR CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY celebrates its first decade in 2014 by organizing the exhibition “PIN 10 ANOS – PIN 10 YEARS« .

The exhibition shall be open to the public from September 10th to October 3rd, 2014, at “Galeria de Arte Moderna Fernando Azevedo, Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes”, in Lisbon.
The official opening shall take place on September 9th, 2014, at 6 pm
with the presence of the curator Marie-José van den Hout.
The exhibition aims to give a perspective on the work developed between 2004 and 2014 by artists who became PIN members and who applied for this project.

PIN 10 años

The exhibition is made up of two sections:
- A selection of approximately 90 artworks chosen by the curator Marie-José van den Hout from approximately 500 works sent by artists and schools that submitted their application to the project.
- Seventeen portraits of people – that during the last decade have been supporting PIN – wearing one of the artworks exhibited. Each portrait expresses the vision of the photographers invited to participate in the project on the subject portrayed and the jewellery piece chosen.
By means of these pictures, a dialogue between three subjects was created – portrayed subject, photographer and jewel – together with a context for each artwork focussing on the body.

The design of the exhibition is by Fernando Brízio.

Coup de coeur : Andrea Coderch Valor

Classé dans : ADOR (IT),Andrea CODERCH (ES),COUP DE COEUR,Espagne (ES),Shibuichi — bijoucontemporain @ 2:16

From 2011, at Alchimia school, some projects began their life under the Peter Bauhuis & Doris Maninger guidance :

The Hana Collection : Japanese kimono flowers are the source of inspiration for the Hana Collection. Once a silhouette was selected a series of jewelry techniques were applied to transfer the design from fabric to metal.  With the same care and attention as can be seen in many Japanese art forms I applied the same delicacy to each individual piece. Gold, Silver, Shibuichi (a Japanese alloy), wood, silk and nylon thread are the materials in which I worked in to represent my vision of Japan.
The « Querida Yun » Collection : « Dear Yun: We have known each other since I was born but we have never met. I want to fill up the space between us by making a piece per day dedicated to you. It is time to go further, not only with the written words. I know you are very old and feel tired, but wait a little bit more, I am finally coming to visit you. Your friend that loves you. Andrea ».
The result ? at first a letter each day, with the result of 150 brooches. One per day during 6 months. (2012 Gold, silver, japanese fabrics). and then, more and more jewels. FANTASTIC jewels !

Shibuichi (四分一?) is an alloy which can be patinated into a range of subtle muted shades of blue or green, through the use of rokushō treatments. Its name means « one-fourth » in Japanese and indicates the standard formulation of one part silver to three parts copper, though this may be varied according to the desired effect. A 5% silver / 95% copper alloy is also marketed as « shibuichi ».[1] A wide range of colours can be achieved using the whole range of alloy compositions, even above 50% silver. 90% Copper and 10% Silver for a dark grey and down to 70% Copper and 30% Silver for lighter greys.[2]It is a common misconception that both copper and silver oxides form, but in fact a detailed study has shown that only copper oxides are formed on the copper rich regions of the material’s microstructure, while the silver rich regions are left largely untouched.[citation needed]
For most of its history, shibuichi was mostly used to ornament various fittings for katana until the Meiji reforms, when most swordmakers began to make purely decorative objects instead. The material is often used in mokume-gane combinations. Similar alloys have been used elsewhere but the use of shibuichi to achieve different colored patinas appears to have remained nearly unknown outside Japan, until recent interest from artisans in the West. This comprehensive exhibition ties together the multifaceted career and work of Susie Ganch, Associate Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and Director of Radical Jewelry Makeover. An accomplished jeweler and sculptor, Ganch has staked a unique career with trifold contributions to the field of Craft. As a university educator, she trains the next generation of jewelers and metalsmiths; as a practicing artist, she pushes the boundaries of jewelry and sculpture through material, design, and function; as a director of the Radical Jewelry Makeover project, she creates community events that encourage our consideration of the social and environmental impacts of mining and jewelry production through the creation of innovative jewelry made from recycled sources.Susie Ganch: TIED includes two galleries of Ganch’s independent work and one gallery devoted to her collaborative project, Radical Jewelry Makeover (RJM).  This RJM installation includes work by 22 well-known jewelers from across the United States who participated in previous RJM events as well as jewelry made by regional RJM artists and local VCU students. As an outreach program of the nonprofit Ethical Metalsmiths, Radical Jewelry Makeover (RJM) is an innovative community-mining project that raises awareness of the connection between mining, metalsmithing, activism, collaboration and art. The project is both performance and event, linking recycling, reuse and collaborative work sessions with the creation of unique, innovative, handmade jewelry. To learn more about RJM and the artists involved in this exhibition, visit: radicaljewelrymakeover.org and susieganch.com.

« Every yaer  Gioielli in Fermento/Jewels in ferment  aims to gather the infinitely individual expressions of contemporary jewellery authors in relation to popular passions: wine and territories, looking at this terroir as an ensemble of cultural deep-rooted issues.
wearing intensities, wearing the colours of wine
as you can wear sensibilities, identities, mediterranean cultures,
through a piece of contemporary jewellery

This Year we introduce a theme that concerns with the world of colours  as a main concept applied to the contemporary jewellery, as a means of expression at all the degrees of intensities, almost a  metaphor of all added value as it happens for instance in music in representing the real scale of intensities to perform a composition.
The authors which met our project before already testify the aim of our suggestion: as for the previous editions, Gioielli in Fermento means to think at a work designed and produced as a unique piece or limited edition jewellery and this year in particular it means to conceive the colour as an instrument of individual expression, material and immaterial simultaneously to commit to the piece the link between each single story and a wider project for the identification of that mediterranean accent such as the culture of wine and our territories may represent. »

One would expect Jewelry artists to be limited to objects of personal adornment, but many contemporary makers in this field have gone beyond the constraints of functionality to pursue conceptual interests in areas such as photography, kinetics and sculpture. This exhibition seeks makers whose work demands exploration both on and off of the body. What happens when a metalsmith goes beyond the boundaries of the wearable? How does the work change when function and jewelry mechanics no longer need to be considered? Can the conversation continue seamlessly from a necklace into an installation or sculpture? The exhibition will feature two works by each artist selected: one piece of jewelry or wearable object and one piece that shifts in scale, medium or material in order to further investigate their ideas.Juror: Susie GanchSusie Ganch is currently Associate Professor and Head of the Metals Program at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She is also Director of Radical Jewelry Makeover, an international traveling community jewelry mining and recycling project. Exhibition Organizers: Sarah Holden and Kat Cole
