This month stands dominated by the particular jewels of Linda Ezerman :

« In my  jewellery I express how I experience the outside world. I am fascinated by the surroundings I find myself in and what these surroundings invoke in me : paradoxical feelings of freedom, security and imminent danger.
A walk in the woods, for example, invokes a feeling of freedom, yet the woods also make me feel slightly ill at ease: there always seems to be lurking something in the shadows.
With the sea I also maintain a paradoxical relationship. There is space and  unfamiliar life, which I find both fascinating and frightening because of its  incomprehensible infinity.
Moreover, the history of my surroundings create meaning. Century-old remnants of industrial life have made this landscape into what it is today and shaped the people who live here into who and what they are.
The materials I work with originate from my surroundings: felt, wood, silver and copper, mixed with polymer clay, silicone and paint. My work is wearable, which allows it to offer security or protection from that which is so intangible and yet so impressive: the surroundings in which you find yourself.«  Linda Ezerman

“Thin is the line” gains its full expression in the variation within the works it joins.
Drawings, made visible by a continuous line cut, serve as motifs that spread, as if each of those motifs could serve others that can only be envisaged within the conjunct.
Plinths may be sculptures, sculptures may be jewels, jewels may be tools, tools may be drawings, drawings may be thoughts, thoughts may be reflexes of the relation between gesture and perception.

« My work is an attempt to wander along that border between sense and nonsense, between the possible and the impossible, surrounding the void.  »

Alejandra Koreck es una psicoanalista y médica psiquiatra argentina que se inició en el diseño de joyas contemporáneas en el año 2001. Su arte tiene una característica recurrente: a partir de un concepto, elige materiales y técnicas que le posibilitan desarrollar piezas únicas y seriadas.

Alejandra forma parte del grupo Joyería Biológica y participó de exposiciones en galerías de arte y museos de Argentina, USA, México, Bulgaria. Actualmente asiste a talleres de experimentación textil, a cargo de Andrea Cavagnaro, Araceli Pourcel y de escultura, a cargo de Edgardo Madanes.

Se inició en el diseño de joyería en el 2001 en el Centro de Diseño de María Medici. También concurrió a la Escuela de Capacitación del Sindicato de Joyeros y Afines de Argentina. Realizó seminarios de fotograbado en metal, fundición de metales, resina y técnicas de coloración. Ha participado en diversas exposiciones en el país. Actualmente concurre al taller de la diseñadora Fabiana Gadano.

“Fiesta” me llevó a encontrar, sin proponérmelo, este pequeño libro “Longfellow Birthday Book”. Editado por primera vez en 1881, hay en él un verso corto para cada fecha de cumpleaños. Decouverte : Laritza Garcia : « color in the urban landscape »

Laritza Garcia, member of SNAG, is a metalsmith and educator living in Austin, Texas. She received her BFA in Jewelry and Metals from Texas State University and her MFA in Metal Design at East Carolina University. Painting, illustration, and involvement with youth outreach have been a meaningful influence in the direction of her jewelry design practice.

« My work seeks to convey my enthrallment with color in the urban landscape and the transiency of street art. Formally I am driven by keen considerations for line, shape, color, and form both on and off the body. While theoretically, I strive to connect the wearer to the ephemeral qualities of childhood play.  »

« My design practice is underpinned by the conversion of two dimensional lines into objects of adornment. I use inks and calligraphy brushes to make loose illustrations that are the base from which components are developed.
I implement a vibrant color palate as a graphic trigger in efforts to reconnect with playful attitudes. I believe that playfulness helps people cope; problem-solve and can offer emotional lightness.
The intent of this body of work is to infuse wardrobes with pieces that bring levity to the forefront of everyday interactions. »

« My roots are embedded in the U.S. and Mexico border region of the Rio Grande Valley. I have also lived in the culturally vibrant cities of Austin Texas, Atlanta Georgia and most recently, Greenville North Carolina, where I currently pursue a Master’s in Fine Arts at East Carolina University. My work is fueled by my experience of color in the urban backdrop. Notable about my jewelry is the highly saturated color palette that permeates my visual vocabulary. Each composition boasts its own personality: vivid, upbeat and with a hint of pop urbanism. I am particularly interested in color’s ability to both reveal and coat aspects of dialogue. My active participation teaching Youth Art-Reach in communities infuses my work with elements of play. I am drawn to rutolos, graffiti, murals, and neon signs that dot the landscape, and am compelled to alter my own surroundings with work that is vivid, bold and exists somewhere between two and three dimensions.«

« My personal development and professional training have led me to believe that playful attitudes help people cope, problem-solve and can offer emotional lightness. My jewelry pieces present familiar childhood imagery in efforts to drive forth the restorative nature of imaginative behavior. Gestural objects in vibrant colors materialize as graphic triggers that reconnect people with regenerative powers of playfulness. My approach encompasses a dual investigation of gestural drawing and traditional metalworking practices. I use inks and calligraphy brushes to make linear illustrations that are the base from which ideas are developed into refined pieces of adornment. Bijoux contemporains : quelle mise à prix ?

« L’art contemporain voit ses prix s’envoler. Reste un champ encore inexploré : celui des bijoux de notre temps. A mi-chemin entre art plastique et art décoratif, ils réunissent une poignée de collectionneurs et peu de galeries spécialisées en France, contrairement aux pays d’Europe du nord. Qu’à cela ne tienne. Mardi 11 février (2014), la maison Audap & Mirabaud se jette à l’eau, avec la mise aux enchères à l’hôtel Drouot, à Paris, de 220 pièces signées de 90 créateurs, dont quelques célébrités tels Claude Lalanne, Garouste et Bonetti ou Line Vautrin.

« Cette vente a pour ambition de positionner le bijou contemporain, une discipline encore méconnue, sur le marché de l’art, revendique maître Fabien Mirabaud, commissaire-priseur. Faire circuler les œuvres permettra de fixer la cote des créateurs, pour la plupart méconnus du grand public ». Fards à paupières montés en broche de Frédéric Braham,bague bouche en acier-inox de Sophie Hanagarth ou boucle d’oreille en noisettes et plumes de geai de Marine Cauvin : nombre de ces bijoux ont été présentés au musée des Arts décoratifs, dans le cadre de l’exposition « Dans la ligne de mire », l’automne dernier, à Paris. Leur mise à prix se heurte à une difficulté: ils ne sont pas tous taillés dans des matériaux précieux. « Le bijou contemporain n’est pas jugé à sa juste valeur », reconnaît Côme Rémy, gemmologue et expert indépendant en arts décoratifs du 20ème siècle. «Lors des ventes aux enchères, le caratage d’un bijou entre pour un tiers du prix, la signature pour un autre tiers et l’époque (s’il est typique d’une époque) le dernier tiers : autant dire, que la création ne pèse rien, mais jusqu’à quand ? », s’étonne cet expert.

DES TESSONS POLIS PAR LA MER
La vente Audap & Mirabaud, qui comprend de la bague en résine, estimée à 15 euros,  jusqu’à un archer de violon aux 172 diamants , de plus de 100 000 euros , veut rendre justice à la création contemporaine dans toute sa diversité. Ces bijoux, miroirs de l’âme, n’attirent pas que les collectionneurs. « Il y a des passionnés, des femmes notamment qui ne sont pas dans le paraître : elles aiment que l’artiste soit vivant, qu’il puisse leur parler et leur proposer un objet d’émotion qui leur corresponde vraiment », déclare Elsa Vanier, fondatrice il y a dix ans de la galerie éponyme, dédiée aux bijoux contemporains, à Paris. Ici, les parures en tessons polis par la mer de Delphine Nardin côtoient les bagues en argent oxydé et ouvarovite (un grenat de couleur verte) de la Suisse Muriel Laurent, ou les anneaux en ébène, argent et or de l’orfèvre-ébéniste Martin Spreng. «Faire un copié-collé de la nature, ça n’a pas de sens à mes yeux», remarque Agathe Saint Girons, sculptrice de verre et joaillière, familière de la galerie Elsa Vanier depuis ses débuts. « Moi, j’aime créer des bijoux qui racontent une histoire pour des personnes qui prennent le temps d’exprimer qui elles sont, à mille lieux de l’objet décoratif ou de prestige », précise-t-elle. L’historienne du bijou Michèle Heuzé-Joanno vient de consacrer un livre à la genèse de ses créations ( Agathe Saint Girons, vingt ans de création  LelivreDart, 39 euros). On y trouve l’histoire du collier de chien, aux piques de corail ensanglantées, et celle du collier « Mon Dieu, mais que vais-je faire du solitaire de ma grand-mère ? », un sautoir où le diamant disparaît au milieu des pierres baroques de toutes les couleurs.
