Hatara Project started in 2015 as a collaboration between Annea Lounatvuori and Christine Jalio. The name Hatara, from the Finnish hattara – cotton candy – describes something dreamy, sweet and concrete but eventually fragile. Hatara is a meeting point between jewellery artists that have different backgrounds and come from different countries. It’s a connection, an exchange of culture, an experience and knowledge. Now we are 14 women from Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Germany, Japan, France, Australia and The Netherlands.

Meet the artists taking part in this year’s Munich Jewelry Week exhibition TIME PERCEPTION VOL.3.
Jelizaveta Suska
She was born in Latvia, where she completed her Bachelor degree education in Art Academy of Latvia as a metal designer. At the age of 24 she moved to Gothenburg in Sweden for studying and permanent living. In 2015 she graduated from Academy of Design and Crafts (HDK) at University of Gothenburg.
In year 2016 Jelizaveta received The Herbert Hofmann Prize, and Amber prize at Amberif Award.
‘Frozen Moment’ pieces are a lot about feelings of nostalgia, of a moment in time. In my work, I was looking for materialization of these abstract matters. I based it on associations and feelings. After a period of research, I came up with my own material that the pieces are made of. This material has two main compounds: polymer, that is light and transparent, just like ‘a moment’ and crushed marble, that creates an illusion of a solid stone which I associate with a feeling of nostalgia.
In the beginning of crafting each piece, material is hot and dynamic but in a while it turns still. Like a metaphor of a moment becoming a memory. When looking at my works, people often are saying that they look like ice or unknown minerals.
I question traditional approaches and instead of valuable jewels I celebrate the idea behind the material. That’s why for the rear of the brooches and other supporting details I use valuable metals like gold, gold plated silver and titanium.
In this project, I created more than 200 hundred pieces. I then selected 21 and crafted them into the jewelry.

« Refugees; away from their country, away from their home. Fear, persecution, uprooting.
And then an attempt of integration in a society hostile towards the foreign body. An attempt to maintain individuality and a distinct culture through habits, tastes, aromas, mannerisms which are getting attached to the different circumstances of the new land.
Attachments that are being carried as luggage to serve the need of memory; attachments that contribute to the continuation of flow, as well as to the assimilation within this new life. »

PILINO SOMA vol II - ceramic jewelry - nov 4th 2016 - Athens:

Through gestural movements, the artists of ceramic jewelry display the material as a mean of expression and show the compatibility of the clay with the human body.
Achieve to imprint primordial memories: fragments and traces of historical and personal memory of each artist which lead in geometric forms, as if stepped on the frame of an architectural project. Or on the frame of the human figure, allowing many interpretations of semantic terms.

EXCHANGE-BIJOU 1 – Julia Obermaier – coup de coeur « lapidaire »

Julia Obermaier

Je me rappelle, ils m’écoutaient bouche bée ….. « The distance between people« , the « Private space » …..

Julia Obermaier – (Sur)face the space.
« Private space. Working area. The distance between people. The distance between the world and me. Space is a really important subject for me. If someone is crossing the borders of my spaces without permission, it causes a bad feeling within me. That is why I try to protect them as much as possible. But in daily life, one cannot always keep direct surroundings and personal space in their preferred way. This is because our outside world is always in relation with other people and circumstances.
To build my own spaces I cut slices out of agate or rock crystal.  They represent rooms, spaces, containers, boxes or little caves. Some of my works have empty spaces with corners or nooks, while others have an inner life through engravings I cut within the pieces. I am generating space which can be filled with ones own personal feelings, perceptions and sensations. I see my work as containers protecting the innermost emotions of the viewer or wearer.
In contrast to the large space around us filled with other people, I see these pieces as a part of ourselves. They are little copies of the viewer or the wearer. The space inside is reserved for what people find within themselves. The outside surrounding, which is not always controllable for us, becomes the protector of what lies within the piece.  The wearer can then decide if and who is allowed to approach the work, take a look or even touch it. The pieces embody ideas of a second skin and soul protector from the outside world.  They are meant to induce a comforting feeling of inner silence for the wearer, that they can use to confront a busy world. »

« With her bachelor thesis Julia Obermaier delivers a statement of monumental grandeur. To do so, working mainly in agate and rock crystal, is a matter of concentration and patience as well as of spatial transition. Acquiring an extended awareness of space and volume, in the sense of an architectonic perspective,  paired with an empathical sensibility for the wearers and observers body and mind, and at the same time bordering the restrictions of jewellery is a remarkable feature of Obermaiers process of work. The result is a collection of wearables in gemstone with a high quality of sensitivity. As an object, Obermaiers pieces are intriguing and inviting, as soon as they are worn and in unity with the body, they show an until than almost hidden sensuality. » / Theo Smeets

« Agate is one of my most favorite materials. The huge secrecy and variety of agate as a stone and its use over centuries is attracting me in my work. Studying the layers and druses of agate amazes me and makes me curious. What is happening? What is in there? I want to arise these feelings as well in the wearers and viewers of my pieces. You can find sensitivity, strength and multifaceted sides not just in agates, as well in every other living creature. »

» (JoyaBrava)

Clases: JOYATERAPIA Y EXPERIMENTACION CREATIVA

MOKUME school, participates in ATHENS JEWELLERY WEEK 2016, with a series of installations taking place inside its workshops. The purpose of the intallations is to shed light to the story behind each piece/adornment presented: the concept that gave birth to it and the process of its production.
The vital lab space, where the jewelry designer/maker captures the initial idea and proceeds to its implementation, becomes the backdrop of the exhibition. Photographs, video art, and work by selected school graduates frame the event  and broaden our perception of what is jewelry.
MOKUME STUDIO” was founded in Thessaloniki in: 1987 – 88 with one goal: The Vocational Training of the students in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design.
In 1992 – 93, MOKUME opens a new branch in Athens, after an innovative and successful course. The same year Mokume becomes a member of F.E.D.E., (Federation Europeene Des Ecoles), the European branch of Education of U.N.E.S.C.O. In 1994, the shareholders and the management of Mokume schools, submit an application, for the recognition of the programme of studies in the Greek Ministry of Education, which was approved. Since then, both schools are the unique “Private Vocational Training Institudes” in Silversmithing ( in the sectors of: Handmade Jewellery, Casting Jewellery and Jewellery Design ) recognised by the Ministry of Education.
Nowadays, Mokume school’s goal is to encourage their students to approach an artistic view in jewellery, apart from the manufacturing one.

Music sets the rhythm and vinyl becomes the material; or the other way round. Music becomes the material and vinyl sets the rhythm for 17 improvisations on contemporary jewelry; tango-like brooches, rock-inspired necklaces, electro-bracelets. Tap your foot to the beat, prick up your ears and take a look on what’s happening when sound becomes the reason and starting point of inspiration. Seventeen creators and 17 music tracks “playing loud” in an exhibition that won’t leave anyone at peace: Pump Up The Volume.

Chalkis jewelry school

#Chalkis Jewellery School - Eric Robbert :“Chalkis-memory imprints”

Dates: 30/6-3/7,
opening hours: Thur-Sat. 10.00-13.00 & 17.00-20.00, Sun. 10.00-14.00
Chalkis Art school was founded in 1978 by mayor Ioannis Spanos and painters Chariklia and Dimitris Mytaras. It was one of the first art schools to be established in Greece and instigated the creation and foundation of other such schools in other municipalities of Greece.
Adding to the established annual student exhibition, the art school takes part in important exhibitions in many cities of Greece, as well as abroad.
The “Eric Roberts Jewellery School” of “Chalkis Art School”, came to be in 2000 after having received the following precious donation. The largest part of the workshop equipment is a result of the contribution of the wife of renowned jewellery designer Eric Robbert who loved Chalkida and the work of the art school; preserving and expanding cultural heritage.
The aim of “Eric Roberts Jewellery School” is to establish a creative contemporary jewellery hub in Chalkida, where imagination, artistic techniques and pursuits of people wanting to take a creative direction in their lives, are given prominence to.
“Eric Roberts Jewellery School” exhibits its work every two years in Chalkida as well as in galleries in Athens.
Facebook page
(The sense of absence and the presence of memory. An exhibition on jewellery, without jewellery.)
The “Eric Roberts Jewellery School” of the “Chalkis Art School” is participating in the 2016 Athens Jewellery Week with a non-classical approach. The focus is on the procedure, on the presentation of the journey from the idea, memories and emotions to the elements of display and the final composition.
We are interested in the world that lies behind the implementation of forms, the environment in which the idea develops, how this idea is shaped through the study of materials which are transformed, thus reaching the completion of the form; the final piece of jewellery.
This project derived from the city of today’s Chalkis and the fact that it is slowly losing the traces of its past. The past is still present in the memories of the people, but at the same time there is pain at the indifference to the loss of collective memory and values. Questions and thoughts are imprinted in matter, models, texts on the subject and photos. These elements give the opportunity to start up a conversation and exchange opinions, aiming at public awareness on the issues of history, memory, culture and identity.

 » EVERYTHING FLOWS? «
Will we see dreams? Will there be water? Will wounds heal? What will joy be like? Will days succeed nights? Will there still be questions?
“Everything flows”, the renowned philosophical saying by Heraclitus, is also converted into a question, in order to articulate contemporary anxieties, fears and concerns.
Will jewellery, as the protector of the soul, manage to reassure us?
Thirteen jewellery designers from the J.A.W. jewellery art workers group and a video artist pose questions using the discourse of creative jewellery and the image, update what has so far gone unchallenged, challenging the era of neo-absurdism.
Will there be answers?
