From the Coolest Corner – Nordic Jewellery presents groundbreaking and fresh jewellery from Northern Europe, a comprehensive selection of current works by artists from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Baltic States. The best and most innovative Scandinavian art jewellery is presented, assessing its possibilities and potential at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
The project presented in this publication, culminating in a symposium and a travelling exhibition, challenges stereotypical notions of northern European art jewellery. Do the typical Nordic trends of the nineteen-nineties still apply today? Indeed are there currently any general trends at all in Scandinavian design? Or has the orientation towards international design become so dominant that there are no longer any regional characteristics?
Renowned experts have made a selection of representative works, as a basis for researching the role of northern European jewellery in the context of international art.

With 160 works by artists from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Baltic States, this publication considers the significance, strategies and trends of Nordic jewellery art in the early twenty-first century. Expert authors present the backgrounds, developments and characteristics of the contemporary jewellery.

‘Breaking the Ice’ symposium with theorists, artists and representatives of galleries, museums and other establishments, on the subject of the present and future of jewellery art, to be held in January 2013 in Oslo/Norway.

L’Art appliqué ? Qu’est-ce que c’est ?

Quand la création fait irruption dans le quotidien, quand le bijou se fait manifeste, quand la céramique se fait poème, quand le design change la vie, quand les artistes posent un regard neuf sur tout ce qui fait l’ordinaire de chacun et par l’ « intelligence de la main » créent des pièces uniques, c’est là que sont les Arts appliqués.
Design d’objets et de mobilier, création textile, céramique contemporaine, bijou et orfèvrerie, verre, travail du métal,…  Venez découvrir le meilleur des Arts appliqués européens cet été aux Anciens Abattoirs de Mons.
Créateurs confirmés et jeunes talents, dont les créations seront présentées dans le superbe cadre de la Grande Halle, dialogueront dans une scénographie confiée à Evelyne Gilmont, designer bruxelloise qui enseigne à l’Ecole supérieure des Arts plastiques et visuels de Mons.
Un jury international d’experts décernera le Prix européen des Arts appliqués, ce dernier comptant deux catégories :
le Prix des Maîtres d’Art, doté de 3.500 €, décerné à un créateur  âgé de plus de 35 ans, auteur d’une pièce maîtresse.
le Prix Jeune Talent de 3.000 euros, décerné à un jeune créateur âgé d’au maximum 35 ans.

A Sense of Place: New Jewellery from Northern Lands

This exhibition explores the relationship contemporary jewellers have with their environment. Six nations are involved in the project, each at the northern edge of European jewellery practice, and each with their own individual cultural histories and heritage.

As part of a doctorate research project, sixteen emerging, and established, jewellers from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Scotland were asked to make two new works. The first piece was informed by a box of collected objects and materials that each artist gathered from an environment which is significant to them. This collection became a research process towards their tangible interpretation of place.

These ‘Topophilia’ (love of a place) boxes were then swapped, anonymously and at random, for another artist’s box that formed the stimuli for the second piece of jewellery. The work is displayed in pairs alongside the corresponding box of source materials illustrating the different approaches taken by artists with the same stimuli. Visitors can compare how the artist’s work is affected by working from the objects they have chosen and from objects that have been selected by someone else.

The collections in the boxes and the finished work are poetic responses to feelings of belonging through the language of making. This project is a celebration of our cultural links through our lived experience of our environment; cementing the bonds of cultural identity through collected and crafted material objects and forming new connections to our place in the world.

Inaugura mercoledì 7 dicembre 2011 alle ore 19,00 presso la Galleria Cristiani, Via Porta Palatina 13 – Torino, la mostra Forma vs Materia – Volume 3, l’annuale esposizione che, dal 2009, porta un’incursione nel gioiello contemporaneo attraverso un’innovativa selezione di designer europei.

Forte del successo di pubblico ottenuto negli anni scorsi, la mostra Forma vs Materia, presenta anche questo anno al pubblico torinese un percorso che, tra innovazione e curiosità, contiene le nuove tendenze dell’arte orafa italiana ed europea.

L’esposizione, curata da Mariola Demeglio, propone anche questo anno un viaggio dove la forma dei gioielli va alla ricerca di nuove espressioni attraverso anche un connubio con materie spesso inusuali nel gioiello: dall’argento al carbonio, all’oro fino ai materiali ritenuti più poveri.

Per questo terzo anno dell’evento-appuntamento saranno esposti e messi in vendita pezzi unici da indossare e portare tutti i giorni con la consapevolezza di mostrare e stupire per Forma e Materia: una selezione di gioielli nati dalla creatività e dall’arte di giovani designer affermati in tutta Europa.

With the second edition of the Fondazione Cominelli Award for Contemporary Jewellery 2011 there will also be the inauguration of the Permanent Collection of Contemporary Jewellery; each edition will enrich the Collection with new works, some by the competition participants and others by artists selected for this year 2011 by the historian and jewellery critic, Bianca Cappello. mais … faut pas se faire de cheveux dans la vie !! ici, on est à un poil du bijou ….. si ce ne sont pas des bijoux au poil !! ;-)

Au-delà du dégoût que peut susciter l’emploi d’un tel matériau (à la « grande époque » du bijou en cheveux, à l’époque Victorienne, mode lancée par la très romantique Reine Victoria, cet engouement eu un grand succès dans les pays anglo-saxons mais suscita du dégoût et un certain rejet en France et dans le reste de l’Europe), ce n’est pas étonnant, à mon sens, qu’il suscite tant d’attrait parmi la jeune génération de bijoutiers : à force d’interroger le rapport du bijou au corps, le corps s’incorpore petit à petit au bijou lui-même.

« Contemporary art is getting hairy Long and silky; short and curly. Blond, brunette, red or grey. It’s hair and it has an important part in our perceptions of ourselves. It defines gender and visual identity, and is playing an important role lately in art — in jewelry, drawings or in mixed media pieces. Hair has long had a role in the work of artists and artisans. In the Victorian era, creating jewelry from hair became almost as popular as knitting or crocheting.  By using one’s own hair or that of a beloved family member women were able to design bracelets, chains, rings and earrings. Apart from jewelry, mourners would weave hair into decorative, memorial wall hangings. By the early 1900s using hair fell out of fashion. During the past 15 years, however, there’s been a fascination among contemporary artists using skin, nail clippings, urine and hair to create various forms of art. Fascinated with Victorian hair jewelry, artist and jewelry designer Melanie Bilenker has revived the art form. Like the Victorians who kept lockets of hair and miniature portraits painted with ground hair and pigment to secure the memory of a lost love, renders the « quiet minutes, the mundane, the domestic, the ordinary moments » from her own tresses. Bilenker observes various daily activities such as cleaning, bathing, dressing, resting or eating. She chronicles the private moments by setting the camera’s timer and goes about her business which can be anything such as eating chocolate, writing a note or enjoying a Saturday morning breakfast. Once she has the photographed images, Bilenker creates tracings of the forms within ghem with thousands of tiny strands of her own hair – which are eventually fixed in resin.  She meticulously layers several different drawings to give the appearance of depth, one as foreground, another as background.  The entire process takes the course of about a week of laying hairs, mixing resin, and then allowing it to cure.  Says Bilenker, « Once the hairs are set as line drawings within resin, I shape, smooth and polish the exterior.  I then fabricate the jewelry findings and set them.  The piece is then complete. »" (Courtesy Melanie Bilenker and Sienna Gallery)

The obsession – losing them, collecting them, ordering them, measuring them and archiving them. The desire – to preserve these losses – It gives rise to “transcendieron”.  The discourse is not about beauty and it is not about sensuality, not even about cultural symbols that hair carries.  How much hair do you lose constantly, everyday ? How many pieces grow out of your body and die every moment ?  “The transcendents” are a homage to the moments when you lose your hair. Captured and immortalized in the fragility of the porcelain, they give perpetuity and freeze all their expressions in the moment of their detachment from the body. With a threading method, the artist uses horsehair as connectors. They show the lightness, energy and freedom, while demonstrating the real, natural movement of the hair. Together with the act of keeping and protecting the hair in a porcelain form, they are given another life that keeps them present through their absence.

Matters of Life and Death

An exhibition that explores the responses of nine international jewellery artists to the proliferation of natural disasters and man-made destruction in our world

Matters of Life and Death includes sculptural work, jewellery and film, curated in a way that makes religious, political, artistic and fashion statements asking questions about life and death, light and dark, sobriety and humour.

Visitors will not only be confronted by the striking jewellery they will be provoked into considering the following: How would it feel to have a wolf trap clasped around your wrist?

 

Sophie Hanagarth, this year’s winner of the Herbert Hofmann prize, the world’s most prestigious contemporary jewellery award, presents Trap, wrought iron bracelets that resemble wolf traps with sharp, articulated claws. Says Hanagarth, ‘They are jaws, dentures or mouths worn on the arm. They absorb us, eat us or suck us. By the mere act of putting on these bracelets, our hand is gobbled down, devoured, an extremity of the human body is captured.’ The pieces are brutally beautiful surprisingly sensual and extremely wearable!

Do you dare wear Carbon and Horsehair?
Agnes Larsson combines these unlikely yet elemental materials to create dramatic neckpieces. Carbon is a basic material existing in all living things but which we also consider to be dead, burned and charred whilst horsehair is a natural material that has connections to the body and life. Agnes says, ‘In my pieces I see opposites like alive and dead, darkness and light, surface and depth, fragility and strength.’

Can severed swords become jewels to adorn the body?
Bernhard Lehner describes his jewellery as ‘symbolic disarmament’: weapons deconstructed – literally sawn apart – and then reformed as pieces of provacative jewellery, instruments of destruction recreated as desirable decoration for the body.

But Matters of Life and Death isn’t all about doom and gloom. If you’re worried that our exhibition is going to bring you down, we’ve also selected jewellers whose work is energetic, creative and joyful to lift the spirits including colourful post apocalyptic mosaic tree brooches by Samantha Queen and vibrant, creative avant garde work by Lina Peterson that injects a literal ray of sunshine.

Says curator Kath Libbert, ‘I wanted to curate an exhibition that reflects on destruction both natural and man-made, as this is a huge preoccupation in our world at the moment, but also an exhibition that explores the possibilities for regeneration, hope and humour. We’re also inviting visitors to be photographed wearing a piece that moves, excites, revolts…and to record their response on our ever growing Chain of Thought which will become an integral part of the exhibition. We hope you will feel compelled to make a visit, it’s a matter of life and death! ’

Platina welcomes Agnes Larsson for her first solo exhibition in the gallery. In a short time, she has surprised her audience with unexpected large seductive jewellery made in blackest carbon. With a deft hand Agnes Larsson has succeeded to transform carbon into a cohesive body of work Together with horsehair she creates basic forms as shields along the body. The result is a series of elegant necklaces with dominant expression.

Agnes Larsson’s work often starts in abstract thoughts about great forces that surround us, thoughts which can be difficult to express in words, such as life, death, heaviness and lightness.

« With these words in mind I do a selection of material, in this case carbon, a basic material existing in all living things around but which we also consider to be dead, burned and charred.
Very often, I let the material in itself be the guideline. Thoughts in collaboration with my hands make the researching. Deep inside the core material I make the sketch work. Limitless, intuitively and fairly quickly I am looking for expressions that match, respond to and express something related to the theme. Often I use opposites to emphasize different characteristics of the material that I think are important for this work. A second material is added, horsehair, a natural material that has connections to a body and a life.

At first glance, these jewellery pieces seems heavy and impossible to wear but in fact they are light and shaped for the body. Opposites may seem typical of Agnes Larsson’s work, life and death, light and darkness, surface and depth, fragility and strength. And, that’s just the way life is – natural and mysterious.

Agnes Larsson received his Master degree from Konstfack College of Arts 2007. In 2010 she was awarded two major awards for her jewellery :

 Susan Cummins, Chair of the Art Jewelry Forum (AJF), and Susan Kempin, Award Program Chair, are pleased to announce this year’s (2010) Emerging Artist Award winner, Agnes Larsson. Larsson was chosen from among 117 entries, from 38 countries.
The goal of the Emerging Artist Award is to acknowledge promise, innovation and individuality in the work of emerging jewelers. The competition is open to makers of art jewelry who have recently completed their professional training and have not been a featured artist in a commercial gallery or museum. Larsson will receive a $5,000 cash award. In addition, her work will be featured by an AJF member gallery at the Sculptural Object and Functional Art (SOFA) Expo in Chicago and in AJF ads, and she will serve as a juror for next year’s competition.
Jurors for the 2010 competition were Namita Wiggers, Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Craft, Portland, Oregon; Susan Beech, long-standing member of AJF and collector of contemporary jewelry; and Sharon Massey, jeweler and recipient of the AJF’s 2009 Emerging Artist Award.
Criteria used in the judging were originality, depth of concept and quality of craftsmanship.  Larsson used carbon and horse hair in this series of work she submitted. She allows the material to lead the way through the working process, drawing inspiration from thoughts about gravity, lightness and heaviness, death, life, transparency and darkness, growth, decomposition and transformation to show contrasts like fragility and strength, depth and surface, darkness and light.
Juror Susan Beech commented, ‘This body of work most exemplified the guidelines for judging: originality, depth of concept and quality of craftsmanship. The use of carbon and horsehair, original materials, work well together. The first thought that came to mind when I looked at this body of work was elegant.’ Sharon Massey added, ‘Agnes Larsson presents a cohesive body of work that I found quite unusual and poetic. Her forms are simple, emphasizing the texture and blackness of the carbon as well as the fragility of the horsehair. Her artistic voice seemed the most authentic and unique.’
Larsson received a BFA, in 2004, and an MFA, in 2007, in Silversmithing and Jewellery from Konstfack University College of Arts, Craft and Design, Stockholm, Sweden. (AJF blog)

Karbon, kohlenstofffaserverstärkter Kunststoff, ist ein ungewöhnliches Material für Schmuck. Bei der Herstellung der Stücke spielte auch der Zufall eine Rolle. Die Farbe Schwarz, die reizvollen Oberflächen, die Bruchspuren: Erst bei der bewussten Beschränkung auf einfache, aber elegante Grundformen kommen sie zum Tragen. Ein wirkungsvoller Kontrast ergibt sich auch daraus, dass die schwer wirkenden Objekte in Wirklichkeit ziemlich leichtgewichtig sind.

(le charbon …. est un matériau rare pour les bijoux. Dans la fabrication des pièces « l’accident » a également joué un rôle. La couleur noire, les belles surfaces, les traces de fractures : ce n’est que lorsque la restriction délibérée des formes de base entre en jeu, simples mais élégantes. Un contraste efficace en raison du fait que les objets, d’apparence lourds, sont en fait assez légers en réalité)(traduction google …)
