This exhibition’s catalogue has received support from the Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts as well as the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

1. Each of the three curators has put together a selection of works illustrating their specific take on

difference and repetition.

2. Rather than display at once their three selections, we preferred re-assembling them into three

conversations around the subject.

4. This method will hopefully encourage visitors to spend more time with less work, and enjoy the

This special exhibition is the eldest exhibition of contemporary jewellery work in the world. It takes place since 1959 every year during the International Trade Fair in March. Except the transport cost until Munich the participation in the special show is free of charge for you. Three contributions of Schmuck 2013 will be awarded with the Herbert Hofmann Prize. The prize commemorates Dr. Herbert Hofmann, the founder of the special show in 1959. In addition the jury of the Bavarian States Prize will look at the works in the special show. The Bavarian States Prize is awarded to 10 contri-bution of applied art within all contribution of the International Trade Fair. This prize is awarded with 5.000€.

More than 552 goldsmiths from 43 countries around the globe applied to participate in the special “Schmuck” (Jewellery) show at the International Crafts Fair in Munich next year. This great interest once again confirms the importance of this event in the context of contemporary jewellery-making and the significance attached to it worldwide. An above-average number of applications were received this year from Australia, Japan and Taiwan, but also from New Zealand and Argentina, the latter having been among the applicants for only a few years now. The selection for 2014 was made especially interesting thanks to the many new exhibitors nominated by the curator Jorunn Veiteberg of Copenhagen. Unusually, “Jewellery 2014” features over 25 new exhibitors, who will be represented in this renowned exhibition for the first time.

For the year 2014, a total of 66 participants from 25 nations were invited to exhibit. Numerically most strongly represented are goldsmiths from Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Denmark and Sweden. The applicants grow younger by the year, an indicator that even before or immediately after finishing their training goldsmiths seek to compete in our special show, present their work to an interested public, experts, gallery owners and museum curators, and rapidly find their way into the jewellery avant-garde. “Jewellery” is an important venue for making a name for oneself in international goldsmiths’ circles, establishing contacts, and not least, witnessing the award of the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Prize on Saturday.

The special “Jewellery” show is characterized by the choice of certain themes which, in the eyes of curator Jorunn Veiteberg, represent salient traits of current jewellery design. As signs of our times and selection criteria, she sees found objects of metal or wood, things that bear definite marks of use, materials that speak an expressive, earthy language, forms and structures reminiscent of architecture, as well as masks, a tendency to mysticism, and forceful color schemes.

Honored as next year’s Modern Classic will be Dorothea Prühl, a goldsmith who lives in Halle. A teacher at Burg Giebichenstein Art College, she not only helped shape an entire generation of young goldsmiths but, over and above her teaching activity, has created an admirable, original oeuvre that holds a very special place within contemporary jewellery design.

Curator of “Jewellery 2014” is Jorunn Veiteberg, a Norwegian art historian who lives in Copenhagen. An arts journalist and exhibition curator, Veiteberg has taught since 2002 at the National Academy in Bergen, Norway. Since 2013 she has been guest professor at the University of Göteborg, Sweden, and chairwoman of the Norwegian Crafts Association. She has published in the fields of contemporary jewellery and ceramics. Veiteberg says it was a great honor for her to make the selection for “Jewellery 2014.” She was especially impressed by the quality of the submissions and their international range. For her as a Scandinavian, it was an enriching experience to see so many submissions from South Korea, Japan, Argentina, the U.S., and many other countries from around the world.

The Handwerkskammer organizes the special shows Exempla, Talente, Modern Masters and Schmuck at the International Handwerksmesse München with the Herbert-Hofmann-Award 2014 ceremony on Saturday 15th March at 4 p.m. We will show in our Galerie Handwerk the exhibition WUNDERRUMA – Jewellery from New Zealand.

La galerie COLLECTION d’Ateliers d’Art de France prend le bijou ornemental et portable à contre-pied et le rend sculpture monumentale.

le rapport au corps est implicite, mais qu’en est-il du rapport à l’espace ?

le bijou offre un volume en 3D dont la contrainte reste d’être portable… mais portable par qui ?

«Je réalise un bijou pour quelqu’un, je ne sais pas encore qui, mais je sais que – comme par miracle – il y aura une Cendrillon à qui il ira» (Eric Desprez de Gésincourt).

anti-Bijoux cherche à bouleverser le rapport d’échelle traditionnellement rattaché à l’idée que l’on se fait du bijou. On cherche à révéler ses composantes structurelles, manifestement en lien avec la sculpture, l’architecture, la danse, la musique…. Il y a chez chacun quelque chose de l’ordre de la mise en scène

 

Anti-bijoux s’articule autour de deux principes :

 

▶ Une exposition présentant les «pièces d’attitude et de comportement» (Patricia Lemaire) de cinq créateurs : Eric de Gésincourt, Fabien Ifirès, Stéphane Landureau, Patricia Lemaire et Alexander Blank.

 

Eric  de Gésincourt a pour bijou culte la bague.

Il nous proposera des bagues à facettes en corian bleu, en bleu de joaillerie et en cire bleue directement issues de ses encres de chine ou de ses compositions structurelles de blocs en médium qu’il photographie. La bague y apparaît telle une ville, telle une juxtaposition de volumes séparés par des failles et réveillés par la lumière.

Fabien Ifirès provient du monde de la sellerie traditionnelle.
La marque, créée il y a deux ans, manifeste son attachement au savoir-faire (tout est cousu main), aux matières nobles et à la protection de l’environnement (cuir à 80% français, crin de cheval naturel, tannage végétal, cordons de soie produits par une entreprise du patrimoine Vivant parisienne…). Leurs collections, magnifiquement épurées, sont très bien commercialisées à l’étranger (au Japon, à Singapour, aux Etats-Unis, en Australie, au Royaume-Uni). parallèlement à notre exposition, Fabien Ifirès expose au MAD de New-York dans le cadre d’une exposition internationale sur le bijou contemporain. Les bijoux Fabien Ifirès se situent aux marges de plusieurs tendances. Les collections se calent sur celles de la haute couture. Leurs sautoirs, colliers et manchettes séduisent par leur nature luxueuse et «hermésisante», leur côté «Simone de Beauvoir», tout autant que par leur créativité audacieuse et totalement «underground».

Stéphane Landureau soumet la thématique et la forme à la technique.

Il ne cesse d’expérimenter et conquiert avec passion les possibilités formelles que lui permettent le travail du métal repoussé et les outils sans cesse inventés pour servir le projet. Réalité du geste, intimité de l’atelier, quête formelle du métal déformé, rapport d’échelle, abstraction appliquée sont des termes qui noués ensemble définissent assez bien la rigueur et la joie qui le mènent. Les pendentifs Cratères qu’il présente se posent à plat sur un socle. Le lien est retenu, caché, à l’intérieur du volume. Le Cratère se porte en pendentif, à hauteur du nombril. Le volcan évoque le feu, indispensable à la ciselure, le nombril, sorte de point d’équilibre de l’être, le feu intérieur de chaque individu.

Patricia Lemaire est une artiste animale et cérébrale.
Elle travaille autour de trois piliers : le corps, le bijou et l’espace. Le médium choisi est de l’ordre de la relation nouée entre ces trois acteurs, mais devient, par le contrepied qu’elle lui impose ou la noblesse qu’elle lui confère un nouveau, territoire d’expérimentation à part entière. La relation au corps est primordiale, et à la source de tout. Son premier outil de joaillier est la danse. Le corps convoque le rituel alimentaire, la survie, la communauté des hommes, le déchet – que Patricia Lemaire nomme relief et qu’elle a à cœur d’anoblir (os de poulet, queues de cerise sont parties intégrantes de la préciosité et de la beauté).
Patricia Lemaire produit selon elle des «pièces d’attitude et de comportement», qui n’ont pas besoin du corps pour vivre dans l’espace, même si elles s’en sont nourries. Autoportées ou sur socles, elles demandent à vivre sous toutes leurs faces, comme des sculptures. Mais imaginer porter un bijou d’exception (la couronne de la reine d’angleterre, par exemple, ainsi qu’elle aime à le dire à ses élèves de l’aFedap), son port virtuel en somme, suffit à faire bouger différemment chacun de nous dans l’espace. L’oeuvre est donc une sculpture dans l’espace, dont on peut fantasmer le port pour la faire évoluer différemment dans l’espace. Le  corps n’est en ce cas pas nécessairement l’objet de destination, mais le relais éventuel et fantasmé du bijou. Le corps devient l’accessoire du bijou.

Alexander Blank a créé un monde fantastique composé des figurines cultes des dessins animés de notre enfance produits par la Warner Bros.

Mais ces animaux, très anthropomorphiques attendent manifestement plus de cette mise en volume, ils seraient presque prêts à s’approprier leur vie ! Une fougue apte à susciter chez le spectateur nostalgie, amusement et espoir. Sculptés dans une mousse rigide, éminemment tactiles et peints ensuite en blanc ou en noir, leur ambition est résolument monumentale et rivaliserait volontiers avec la statuaire en marbre classique. Alexander Blank, créateur allemand vivant à Munich, sera pour la première fois exposé en France

▶ Des installations, pour « aller au delà de sa zone de confort » (Pascal Oudet)

Tout au long de l’exposition, trois artistes vont tenter de relever un défi : conformer leur travail de sculpteur à l’élaboration d’un bijou dans l’espace de la galerie.

Ils abordent respectivement trois matériaux nomades, la terre crue, la laine et le bois. La commande leur en a été faite très en amont. Ils ont eu le temps de penser leur projet. Ces interventions in situ représentent pour chacun d’eux une gageure qu’ils sont impatients de prendre à bras-le-corps.

Hélène Angeletti est plasticienne.

Elle a coutume de générer des formes en laine très invasives, ogresques. Pour la lisibilité graphique qu’il  confère, elle a ici élu le noir. Eléments sculptés au crochet, assemblés, suspendus, en vue d’édifier une immense parure, si grande que c’est le bijou qui prendra le visiteur par la main pour entrer en son sein. C’est le corps qui pénétrera le bijou-installation et non l’inverse.

Nicole Crestou est plasticienne, adepte des installations-destructions en terre crue.

Conception de la mise en scène, réalisation des éléments sur place et en atelier, installation puis observation de la destruction, telles seront les étapes du travail exposé à la galerie Collection. Nicole Crestou traite de la défiguration humaine, le plus souvent à travers des moulages de son propre corps (de son visage ici). Elle érige une installation et dispose en dessous un bassin empli d’eau. Au rythme de l’eau ajoutée, la sculpture va entreprendre son agonie, par capillarité. L’entreprise d’anéantissement pose la question du temps (artificiellement accéléré ou ralenti), de la pérennité de l’oeuvre d’art, de la valeur mercantile de l’objet de luxe.

Pascal Oudet est sculpteur, tourneur sur bois. La machinerie indispensable à son travail rend sa pratique moins nomade que les autres, mais il se sent armé pour traiter du monumental. Dentelles de chêne brûlées, dorées à la feuille, la matière est là, magnifique et ensorcelante. Aller vers le très petit aurait, par contre, été inconcevable. Le principe de l’installation lui est moins familier, mais le défi l’enthousiasme.

Il entend sortir de sa zone de confort et prend le risque de se frotter à la thématique du bijou –inédite pour lui– en présence des visiteurs. L’enjeu principal pour lui étant de parvenir à conférer de la fluidité à son ensemble sculpté.

Who or what will be topsy – turvy here? Staged as a „ collision „ between five jewelry makers, all of whom live in Munich but are of disparate origins, the first joint exhibition of Alexander Blank, Attai Chen, Carina Chitsaz- Shoshtary, Melanie Isverding and Mia Maljojoki will present intriguing jewelry creations at Rosemarie Jäger’s gallery in Hochheim.
These five jewelry artists met while studying in Professsor Otto Künzli’s class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Nevertheless, visitors will find no trace of homogeinity or uniformity in this exhibition, because each oft hem has found his or her own idiosyncratic „ language „ that manifests itself in their highly imaginative and original jewelry. What units them ist he sculptural quality of their pieces, which present themselves as small, three – dimensional wearble sculptures that also reveal demanding artistic standards and meticulous craftsmanship.

Substance

The exhibition Substance, curated by Hnoss Initiative, presents five leading exponents in the international jewellery field: Dorothea Prühl, Peter Hoogeboom, Lucy Sarneel, Alexander Blank and Hanna Liljenberg. The first three have long enjoyed international careers while the last two come from a younger generation. What they have in common is their strong roots in specific materials as well as the fact that they have developed their own approaches to the relationship between material and ornament. Hnoss describes the theme in these terms:

“Artists often choose the material or materials that best enables them to describe or communicate what it is that they want to narrate in their work. This has been characteristic of the cutting edge of international jewellery design. Working consciously with a material comes naturally to jewellery artists. What the artists invited to take part in Substance have in common is the fact that they use and identify themselves with a profound knowledge of a specific material and, in a highly convincing manner, use the material to communicate. Certain artists have become almost synonymous with a particular material.

This year the exhibits accepted for SCHMUCK were selected by Bernhard Schobinger of Richterswil in Switzerland. A trained goldsmith, Schobinger is one of today´s leading jewellery designers. His works are regarded as influential in determining new directions in style and the man himself is seen as an artist with a unique aesthetic sense who has broken new ground particularly in avant-garde jewellery design. Not surprisingly, the works selected by him for SCHMUCK 2013, reflect this background. « They include a number of exciting new artists, but also many familiar names, » reveals Dieter Dohr. The exhibits at SCHMUCK include works by Robert Baines (Australia), David Bielander (Switzerland), Sungho Cho (Korea), Sam Tho Duong (Vietnam), Kimiaki Kageyama and Ryuichiro Nakamura (Japan) and Bruce Metcalf (USA).

Since 2006 the exhibition has put in a guest appearance in a range of countries, among them Spain (Museo de Illustración y Modernidad, Valencia), Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (Municipal Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua), the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York) and France (Espace Solidor, Cagnes-sur-Mer).

 SCHMUCK is an international jewellery competition which is staged every year in March as part of the Internationale Handwerksmesse. For over fifty years SCHMUCK has been the jewellery sector´s premier exhibition. From among the many applications received from designers to exhibit in SCHMUCK, a single juror makes his or her own personal selection of those whose work will be presented. This juror is generally an international curator and expert in contemporary jewellery design. In 2006 the Danner Foundation took over as patron of the exhibition. The organiser is the Handwerkskammer für München und Oberbayern (Chamber of Trades and Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria), and the venue host is the Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH.
