Amy Tavern, I Can Only Stay Away for So Long No. 1-7, 2014, Icelandic woolAmy Tavern, I Can Only Stay Away for So Long No. 1-7, 2014, Icelandic wool

I’ve been without a home by circumstance and by choice for several years. In 2012, I began traveling in the US and abroad for my work, rarely spending extended periods of time in any one location. This new lifestyle made me realize I don’t know where I want to live, and I find myself searching for this seemingly elusive place today. While I am content to be without a home, I long for that one place where I feel most myself, a place where I want to stay. In an effort to find what I’m looking for, I was compelled to define and redefine home through research, writing and object making, as well as examining my past, my present and my future.
Over the past year, I have explored ideas of home in three distinctive places. Arriving in Iceland for the first time, I felt attune with myself and with my surroundings in a way I had never felt before. The pieces I made in a two-month residency there illustrate feelings of belonging and of being found. In my childhood home in New York, I reflected on my relationships with my family as well as relationships with the places I’ve lived in the United States. The foundation of my artistic sources and countless other details were revealed as I considered individual people and locations. Further, through all the places I have traveled, I have become keenly aware of my ability to find home in the unknown. In all of these places, Iceland, the US and countries abroad, I examined memories and focused on things that carry emotional weight. I also relied on the language of jewelry, looking to a variety of historical forms for guidance.
“I Live Here Now” represents what home means to me as well as the memories and emotions associated with the different places that are a part of my collective home. Jewelry, objects, text, photographs, ritual, arrangements and installation serve to demonstrate my ideas and to establish a unique narrative. Ultimately, I know my home is the place where I am truly myself, and, essentially, I know now that I don’t need a physical location to call home; my home is me and it is wherever I am. – - Amy Tavern, 2014

The American artist Amy Tavern’s work often consists of memories, processed and transformed. Reinterpreted by the viewer they become platforms for discussions and new ideas.
I make abstract thoughts concrete and tangible and further alter the memory itself beyond what happens naturally. The pieces are based on memories that are specific to me but the moments and feelings are truly universal. Ultimately, by creating these objects, I preserve my memories, make the fleeting more permanent”  – Amy Tavern

EXPO ‘Observation/Translation’ – Beyond Fashion gallery, Antwerp (BE) – 6 Sept.-20 Oct. 2012

Classé dans : Amy TAVERN (US),Belgique (BE),Exposition/Exhibition,Gal. Beyond (BE) — bijoucontemporain @ 20:10
Solo Exposition « Observation/Translation » by Amy Tavern
I will give a lecture on Wednesday, September 5 in conjunction with the opening of my new solo exhibition at Beyond Fashion. The lecture is at 7pm and I will talk for about 30 minutes. The presentation will include my thoughts on living in Belgium and how it has affected my work as well as a description of my process. I will also give some background information on my career and life before coming to Belgium as a way of introducing myself to my new audience. I won’t have a Powerpoint to lead me through so I will walk around the installation as I talk. It will be a different way for me to present my work but I think it will allow me to be more casual and conversational with attendees. I will have a slide show on my laptop on view so everyone can take a look at my previous work and some process shots for this new work.
If you live in the area and would like to attend (and I hope you will!), please RSVP with me or the gallery. You can send me an email at amy@amytavern.com or to the gallery at beyondfashion@antwerpen.be. You may also call the gallery at +32 +3 2378541

« Observation is the act or instance of noticing. As a resident in a new and foreign place, my power of observation has become important to me in unusual and often unexpected ways. It has also become heightened in a way that allows me to simply see more. Over the course of more than two months I have recorded my daily observations with photographs, drawings, and text, everyday encountering things I have never seen before. These observations are moments between specific inanimate obje
cts and me, and, unbeknownst to them, between other people and me. They are also impressions of the beauty I see in my surroundings, such as the often-gray sky of Belgium or the sense of history preserved in its architecture and urban decay. Finally, they are representations of maps and walks and the work of the Baroque painters.
Translation is a change from one form to another. Also as a resident of a new and foreign place, I translate almost everything I do: language, time, measurement, temperature, currency. At first my ability to translate was slow and challenging, often taxing. Then gradually with practice, the process became quicker until eventually translating was nearly second nature.
My new work focuses on my observations and the way I translate them to tangible objects. I observe, I record, I translate in my mind, I form an opinion. Then I develop an idea for an object and translate it again into a new, physical form. This process and the resulting pieces are how I understand my new home and share the experience with others. Ultimately, they are the reverent manifestations of a personal collection of memories.«  Amy Tavern

« The jewelry that has come in and out of my life over the years has had a profound effect on me, and ultimately, fueled my desire to be a jeweler. These special pieces changed my perspective on jewelry and form part of my history. In « Fabricated Memory: Jewelry Box, 1980, » I created new works based on recollections of the contents of an old jewelry box and re-imagined through my formal language of shape and line, layering and repetition. In addition, significance lies in how the work exists in reality–arranged in a specific manner and viewed as a group, not just as individual pieces. This aspect stems from how I played with the jewelry box as a child, carefully arranging its contents over and over.

In « Collected Memories: 1974-Present, » I analyzed the jewelry I own to discover patterns and to gain further insight into my history with jewelry. The completed installation serves as a timeline of my life with jewelry and a vehicle for intertwining events and people. The works are made using materials I have collected and are assembled in such a way as to emphasize the impermanence and incompleteness of memory. « This is How I Remember It » chronicles my history and preserves my memories, as the individual pieces from my past act as primary inspiration. » Amy Tavern

« Within my work I am interested in exploring the themes of; the souvenir, ornamentation, memory, longing, and nostalgia associated with the collection of personal objects. I am interested in how ordinary everyday objects transcend the mundane through the association of memory thus becoming personal and precious. Overall my work draws reference to objects that I’ve collected, objects that were hand made or mass produced but due to their limited use for special occasions, they became precious and personal with meaning. By employing the use of new technologies and their materials, my work also explores the ideas of what it means to be made by hand in contrast to mass production and the future of mass customization. »

I am attracted to the role this « billboard » plays in my life. Rendering each piece non-functional, I seek to express a personal commentary of the marketeers’ opportunistic approach to unattainable idealism through ornament. »

David Choi
David Choi – brooch – fabricated steel
« The physicality of steel is cold and rigid. It is fascinating to turn this man-made material into something warm and beautiful. My focus is in this transition from constraint to plasticity. I construct complex forms from multiple elements. My work represents the seamless relationship between order and chaos. To me, perfection is an illusion. The more I deform it, the more it can represent my definition/sense of reality. Jewelry is a large subject in a small object; what animates me is the sentiment of the beautiful. »

Sung-Yeoul LEE – ‘Connection II’ -  Sterling silver, Cable wire / Fabricated
« My goal is associating the idea of intimacy in jewelry objects to the body while the cord functions as a vehicle which conveys metaphorical meaning of connection. When the piece is on the body, the cord seems to penetrate or bind the wearer. I feel that it expresses the physical and conceptual connection between piece and wearer. It is also very meaningful in promoting the intimacy between wearer and the work itself. »
