‘LOOT: Mad About Jewelry’ Returns this Spring with 54 Artists from 21 Countries

From April 4 through 8, 2017, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) presents LOOT: MAD About Jewelry, the annual exhibition and sale of contemporary art jewelry. Now in its 17th edition, LOOT presents a cross-section of the most exciting cutting-edge art jewelry designs, while offering the public a rare opportunity to meet and acquire pieces directly from some of the most skilled creators in the field. A striking example of the evolving possibilities of jewelry as an art form, LOOT: MAD About Jewelry champions the vision and craftsmanship of outstanding art jewelers—most of whom have never before shown work in the United States.

This year’s edition welcomes 54 artists from 21 countries, the majority of whom have never been shown in New York. All were selected by Bryna Pomp following a full year of travel and research.

THE LOOT ACQUISITION PRIZE
Awarded by a jury, the LOOT Acquisition Prize seeks to recognize a LOOT jewelry artist whose work reflects a maturity in artistry and concept; exhibits both a superior and experimental understanding of materials and form; and demonstrates expertise in technique and execution. The 2017 jury is chaired by William and Mildred Lasdon Chief Curator Shannon R. Stratton, Assistant Curator Barbara Paris Gifford, and LOOT Curator Bryna Pomp. The 2017 LOOT Acquisition Prize will be awarded on April 3 at the Opening Benefit dinner.

Anne Dinan« Anne Dinan’s enameled jewelry designs are the result of inspired experimentation and appreciation for an ever-expanding artistic process. Fascinated by the mixing of natural and industrial influences, she incorporates metals, glass, photo decals, assemblage, and metalsmithing to create stunning enamel works. She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and has taught hundreds of students in person and globally through her online classes. Dinan also founded the Trade Handmade Facebook page, which has connected thousands of artists across the world. Her enameled photo decal wall piece Unknown Relatives, based on old photos found at a family farm in Michigan, is part of the permanent collection of Enamel Arts Foundation in Los Angeles. »

« (My) inspiration is nature and industry combined. What have we done? »

J’ai craqué pour le monde d’Anne Dinan -qui malgré son nom très français, nous vient des USA- il y a quelque temps, et je vous ai montré ses blancs …. au tour de ses bleus, qui m’enchantent !
Mais à part les couleurs, et peut-être plus que la couleur, l’émail cache -et dévoile, comme une photo en train de se développer- des mondes industriels « désuets » -je pense au château d’eau en métal empoussiéré du film « Bagdad Café »-,  des paysages industriels comme abandonnés, rouillés, témoins d’une Amérique empoussiérée, « from Vegas to no way » comme dit la chanson du film  …. des paysages, des visages, surgis du passé ….. séquence émotion ! (SURTOUT en écoutant « I‘m calling you » !!)

« “Unknown Relatives”  was based on a series of old portrait photographs found at a family farm in Michigan. Dinan created the 20-piece assemblage using kiln-fired vitreous enamel on copper from digital waterslide transfers »

Anne Dinan is a nationally recognized jewelry and visual artist who attended the School of Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston.

A resident of Exeter, N.H., Dinan has presented her unique and diverse pieces at a number of shows including Alchemy 3, the 2015 Enamelist Society touring exhibition at five New England galleries ; seasonal shows at the Button Factory in Portsmouth, N. H. and Pettengill Farm in Salisbury, Mass; and at

“Myths – Test Drive” in Germany at the 2016 Munich Jewellery Week show (SCHMUCK) .

The central subject of the exhibition is a reflection about the importance of the Water for life.
Water means life and there is no life without water.

Water flows, whispers splashes, tears, rushes, sprays, drips, drops in crystals from the sky like snwoflakes, forming clouds, is blue, gray, green, brown, muddy or clear. The world is covered to 2/3 with water and of which 97.3% salt water, fresh water = drinking water.
At the water, on the water and under water. Deep-sea, ocean, the sea, a river, a waterfall, a lake, a well, a spring, rapids, a pond, water column, water level, water pollution. To drink to drown – to swim to walk on water?

 If you can check out how a car works, why not check out whether a piece of jewellery makes you look glamorous, popular, funny, sophisticated, attractive etc?
If the project works, it will open new ways to promote and sell jewellery and everybody in this business can profit from the experiment.
If it does not work, it will still be a charming utopian experiment to be remembered for years.
However, we think in a country like Germany with shared economy/swarming/DIY dominant in the public discourse the idea will work and  will sell.
