galerie beyond / MICROBIOTA / Arnaud Sprimont:
 2016 Microbiota -SOLO-DEC-2016- Horizon

« With this brand new series, Arnaud Sprimont pursuits a little more the questioning on the basis of his creative research. Supported both by a scientific and empirical observation of the cells and patterns of the living, he walks up and down an invisible and frightening universe, where the strong ties that exist between human being and nature reveal themselves. It’s precisely the exploration of this creeping network that’s at the heart of his approach and of his will to define himself, in nature and in harmony with it, as microbiotes living in symbiosis with their host.
Initially, Arnaud Sprimont, draws his raw material within nature. From elements harvested during his peregrinations, he generates a new alphabet of the living that’ll be the basis of a grammar intended to spin his own mankind. This opens the way to a hybridisation work : a construction is achieved from multiple elements creating a kind of a new biological makeup, fully fantastic and with baroque appearance, such as a crossbreed of improbable species. His interpretation of the material eventually tends to dematerialise the shapes so that they become a representation of his own universe. Their white appearance, neutral, and close to a scientific picture, approach as close to the final shape to capture their reliefs and shadows.
The items of Arnaud Sprimont reveal as an extension in the most secret and infathomable of the human body through a will of defining his true nature in all his boundlessness.  » Marie-Luce Martin / Translation Pierre-Yves LENOIR

EXPO ‘Swedes and Belgian Blues’ – Gallery Four, Göteborg (SE) – 2 Sept.-1er Oct. 2016

Swedes and Belgian Blues

Four Gothenburg, Sweden

Opening: September 2nd, 17-21

FOUR - Swedes and Belgian Blues

Chocolate, beer and Jean-Claude Van Damme, waffles, the European parliament and Brussels sprouts. Sadly enough people probably also associate Belgium with terror and cattle with breeding problems.
When we think of Belgium we think of jewellery! Not only of the diamonds in Antwerp, but predominantly of the eminent art jewellery scene. Belgium has some of the most famous contemporary jewellery schools, – galleries and – artists. Playful, thought provoking and with an elegant confidence, the art jewellery culture is vibrant and powerful.
Galerie Beyond (formerly Beyond Fashion) is situated in the central parts of Antwerp and has been run by Karin De Buysere and René Darmont for 15 years. The work of the artists that the gallery represents has a conceptual strength and challenges the traditional perception of what jewellery is. The connection to the lively fashion- and art field is unmistakable while classic goldsmithing seams more distant.
The exhibition ”Swedes and Belgian Blues” is a co-operation between Galerie Beyond and Four, showing work by 5 Belgian and 5 Swedish artists. Sweden is also a well-known country in the international jewellery world and we also have an influential fashion scene. Are there any similarities? Are there any differences? To connect a certain aesthetic or a style to a nationality might be impossible in a society where the global art scene is only a browser away. But is there something of a local culture? Swedes and Belgian Blues will be shown in Antwerp in January 2017.

« Since I was a kid I have had a strong interest in animals, especially fish and birds. I love their shape, their movements and the pattern of the feathers and scales, their bodies, faces and exceptional behaviour. The pieces on show at « Swedes and Belgian Blues » are made of plastics collected from garbage containers and ditch-banks. I keep my eyes open when I go to the hairdresser; I search in my friends’ bathrooms and fridges – you have to be observant if you are going to find that perfect jewellery material!

In this material she create sharp and exact shapes that look heavy but are surprisingly light. Svedestedt Carboo uses old leather shaping techniques and Cuir Bouilli, adding a contemporary expression to a classic craft tradition. With the right touch, boiling hot water and quite a lot of stubbornness, the leather is transformed into the desired form. « I am drawn to the combination of controlled shapes and soft organic flow, and the clash that takes place in the meeting of the two. »

Paper money came into existence because people did not want to carry their gold around. Through time the relation between money and gold has been close but the connection has changed. Now we are hesitating about having too much money in our wallets but many of us are happy to show wealth, status or image by wearing gold. For this piece banknotes are used as a precious material. The notes are put together to create an object. The banknotes are not damaged, so the object can be taken apart and returned to the monetary value of the materials. Just like precious metals.

Anneleen Swillen - Weights pending 2, 2016, necklace made of resin, plaster, concrete, cotton, rubber and natural stonesAnneleen Swillen – Weights pending 2, 2016, necklace made of resin, plaster, concrete, cotton, rubber and natural stones
Inspired by the way daily goods are consumed and (re)presented, Anneleen Swillen draws attention to the intrinsic but often unnoticed qualities of everyday objects. Weights, pending is an artistic research into both formal and functional potential of disposable packaging for object and jewellery design.  The necklace is composed of pairs of various pendants that differ in weight, shape and size. Both sides of the necklace can be shifted and scaled in search for a balance – or imbalance – when worn. Carrying these weights as a collection of charms around the neck and shoulders does not go unnoticed for the wearer or the viewer.

« My jewellery is in constant collision between the organic and the rigidly constructed. In this project I wanted to simplify the construction of my jewellery to the greatest extent, and I have been working with old painting techniques to produce light in the darkness. Having previously worked with repetitions of one single form, I have now tried to shape one sprawling piece into a cohesive unit. » – Hanna Liljenberg

ADANSONIA DIGITATA

At some point you look in the mirror and ask: who is this person? What happened on the way, how did you get there? Did you grow up?
Is this still you or is this somebody else?
You look to this image from different angles, like from somebody else’s viewpoint. You reflect. Who do you see?

Using modern techniques, ranging from nano-scale imagery to satellite views, A. S. challenges the boundaries of his body and his perception of the world around him. The study of pseudomorphosisms is echoed in the perception of his own experiences. Reflecting and blending scales back and forth, the infinitely large finds meaning in the infinitely small, where an abyss of possibilities opens itself up to him.

Patti Smith – The histories of the universe lie in the sleeping sex of a woman
Number 7 has a biblical significance and it also corresponds to the days of the week, repeating themselves endlessly in a loop… – over and over and over … . A repetition that is being reflected in the new work by Silke Fleischer, as the routine of the everyday. The presented jewellery works refer to settings and actions and are questioning a break through this daily routine.

P. V. works with real matter. He is a firm believer in serendipity, he makes unforeseen discoveries while (re)searching something else. Maybe because of his name (Gr. Petros = rock) or maybe because of childhood memories, his main inspirational starting point is stone and the various geological processes by which rocks are formed. He even tries to make his favorite metal, aluminium, look like stone.

The SCHMUCK is an international exhibition that has been taking place in Munich for more than 50 years. It combines works of established artists and promising newcomers in the area of contemporary jewellery design and is the meeting place for collectors, jewellery lovers and museum curators from Germany and abroad. Organized as a worldwide contest, the works are chosen by an internationally renowned curator each year, this time by Eva Eisler, professor at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (AAAD). “Presenting works at the SCHMUCK is an honor for any jewellery designer“, says Dieter Dohr, Management Board Chairman of the GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH. That is also why this time, more than 600 gold smiths and jewellery designers from Germany and abroad applied for the special show. In spring 2015, contributions by 63 artists from 21 countries will finally be on display. This time, Karel Novak from the Czech Republic will be honored as the classic of modern art. Highlight of the SCHMUCK will be the awarding of the Herbert-Hofmann-prizes on Saturday, 14 March 2015 at 5 pm on stage in hall B1. On this day, a jury will select the three best works of the SCHMUCK. Each year, a number of accompanying events group around the special show at the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich galleries, museums and cultural institutes.

« What is my place in the infinite, what is my place in nature? The work of Arnaud Sprimont is like an open exercise, constantly questioning, evolving and morphing, never at rest. »

« My Body is a chaotic forest »
« As the point of departure to understanding these jewellery pieces of Arnaud Sprimont, I would like to use an idea from French philosopher Blaise Pascal (1) as a reference: what is my place in the infinite, what is my place in nature?
Adopting the interrogative form as an approach to A.S.’s work is key and an integral part of what he does. His work is much like an open exercise, constantly questioning, evolving and morphing, never at rest.
A.S.’s work is rooted is his view of man. As the title of the “My body is a chaotic forest” exhibition makes unambiguously clear, he opens up his private life; the intimacy of his body, the privacy of his relationship with nature, and beyond nature, his vision of human nature.
At the outset, there is observation. Observation which is not confined to what the human eye can see.
Setting out from these studies, he then embarks on constructing a narrative. It is not about lending meaning to this infinite, but to talk about the tensions and romances felt, to highlight relations thought unlikely. In confronting the scales, A. S. composes his own history, seeks his path, gladly losing himself in the illusions there to behold. For, as he states himself, it is not about arriving at a set destination but rather about roaming along a vast path: “the work that goes into these pieces and forms is much like a very long walk in nature, where I am ultimately swallowed whole by the earth and I am at one with the rock. My lungs are like the moss around the trees and my arms can embrace the mountains, like the branches of a giant tree, while my spirit flies off like an owl into the night above the hills”.
By choosing to position oneself – both physically and mentally – on the edge of this infinite chasm, and as suggested by the title of the exhibition, in the face of chaos, one might think that the artists puts himself into an uncomfortable and harrowing situation. This is not the case. The road A. S. is walking is a serene path; the compositions he creates – much as they have a crude and elementary aspect – in the same way as seen in the sights of nature – are solid and compact. The use of two unique and opposite colours in the creation of the various pieces of this work, act to illustrate the artist’s acceptance to simultaneously skirt the depths of the dark night – synonymous with secrecy – and those of white light – which refers to knowledge.
Even when finding himself faced with difficult to fathom secrets, he remains undaunted by this immensity. A. S. is pursuing his path in nature, in his nature, and through his creations narrates the geology of his own body, finding its place in a matter in constant transformation. « -  Marie-Luce Martin, January 2014  (Apparat) (Arnaud Sprimont Solo Exhibition AT Beyond Fashion 2014 (Antwerp, BE)

Exhibition ‘Patro(o)n’ and ‘Wim Ibensprijs 2012’
The exhibition ‘Patro(o)n’ gives consideration to daily rituals, compositions, work grinds and other patterns. At the same time this exhibition about contemporary jewellery provides a platform to see “free of any pattern”.
