Précieux Passages is an international exhibition that highlights the contemporary jewellery youth front. It was born in 2013, arising under the determination of three French artists, Pestre, Sylvestre and Verdier. As the first contemporary jewellery festival was about to take place in Paris (becoming le Parcours Bijoux), they wished to show the general public the great diversity of jewellery and were able to invite twenty-two worldwide artists to be part of a major exposition at the Forney library.
Four years and several exhibitions later, the three artists have become a professional curating team, and many artists of Précieux Passage have won international jewellery awards and recognition. This year the Précieux Passages artists are invited to show their latest pieces at l’Institut Français München, for the second year in a row.

Circuits Bijoux/ "Précieux Passages": wit works by Edu Tarín (BA 2012) and Patricia Domingues (MA 2013) • Bibliothèque Forney, Hôtel de Sens, 1, rue du Figuier Paris 4º • Duration: 17 September - 28 December 2013 • Opening: Tuesday, 17 September, 6 pm: http://fr.ulule.com/precieux-passages/ – avec Patricia Domingues et Edu Tarín.
(bijou Ulrike Kampfert)

The selection of the 62 exhibits to feature in the special show SCHMUCK 2011 was made by Dr Rüdiger Joppien (Head of the Department of Art Nouveau and Modernism at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg), a recognised expert in the applied arts. In total over 650 designers had submitted applications to be granted a space to exhibit within SCHMUCK 2011. Featured in the exhibition are the works of a number of designers of international renown – names like Kimiaki Kageyama (Japan), Ted Noten (Netherlands), Lisa Walker (New Zealand), Ike Jünger (Germany) and Peter Bauhuis (Germany). For the first time this year the exhibition will also include work from China, Mexico and Turkey.

Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

Wendy Ramshaw und David Watkins © Artists

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »

Entitled Also known as jewelery * by French curators Christian Alandete & Benjamin Lignel shows how the participants jewelry artists choose a critical approach to art history, jewelry and crafts traditions. They invite us out from other disciplines such as anthropology, philosophy, film and architecture, questioning the conventional definition of jewelry.Nathalie Perret necklace with plaster powder leaves a shadow on the necklace and the clothes we wear are the shade. Babette Bouchers work revolves around time and memories often based on found objects as a toy or a fragment of a photo. The lost toy has been a sarcophagus and affects the feeling of regret that we can easily recognize. Amandine Meuniers necklace with intricate designs taken from the doors she had seen on his travels is cut in inner tubes – beautiful and sensual.

Other artists raise questions about gender roles and sexuality that Carole Deltenre with his necklace made up of girls respectively boy toys in plastic. In Frédéric Braham projects Cosmetics is a shift.  It is not the user who is attractive but beauty aids become coveted items in the form of natural-looking lipstick, eyeliner and powder box in silver and gold.

Also know as jewelery * has been shown in galleries and museums in the United States and Europe.

EXPO- Also known as jewellery is a traveling exhibition with 17 artists -

« Contemporary jewelry, in France and abroad, is undergoing a spectacular evolution : in recent years, it has both staked out new territories of experimentation, and claimed a pivotal position between art, design and traditional craft. The title of this exhibition underlines the specificity of contemporary jewelry, and the ambiguity inherent to a craft-based, boundary-pushing practice : the work selected is thus both alien to its tradition, and well versed in its history. The selection for this touring show focused on the work of 17 artists – French, or working in France - who together make a convincing case for the vitality of this rather under-exposed part of the European contemporary jewelry community.

This project is part of the ongoing program by La Garantie, Association for Jewelry, founded in 2007 in Paimpont (France). The purpose of this association is to promote jewelry outside its primary audience of makers, collectors, and gallery owners. The aim is to increase its visibility, and encourage confrontations with amateurs and specialists alike, through various approaches : historical conceptualization, the confrontation of current practices, the promotion and critical analysis of contemporary trends. The diverse backgrounds of the association’s founding members – two makers, two PhDs, one curator – reflects our ambition to establish a self-sufficient cultural `task force´ able to collaborate with both institutional and private partners. » (Merci pour cette présentation à la « Velvet da Vinci » Gallery)

Participating artists : Claire Baloge • Babette Boucher • Brune Boyer-Pellerej • Frédéric Braham • Monika Brugger • Carole Deltenre • Joanne Grimonprez • Sophie Hanagarth • Ulrike Kampfert • Emmanuel Lacoste • Catherine Le Gal • Florence Lehmann • Christophe Marguier • Amandine Meunier • Jana Natier • Nathalie Perret • Maud Traon
