This exhibition’s catalogue has received support from the Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts as well as the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

1. Each of the three curators has put together a selection of works illustrating their specific take on

difference and repetition.

2. Rather than display at once their three selections, we preferred re-assembling them into three

conversations around the subject.

2. Each conversation focuses on a different aspect of the subject.

3. The conversations will follow one another (some of the pieces will be present in all three sessions)

4. This method will hopefully encourage visitors to spend more time with less work, and enjoy the

complex things they suggest, or the silence they create around them

This special exhibition is the eldest exhibition of contemporary jewellery work in the world. It takes place since 1959 every year during the International Trade Fair in March. Except the transport cost until Munich the participation in the special show is free of charge for you. Three contributions of Schmuck 2013 will be awarded with the Herbert Hofmann Prize. The prize commemorates Dr. Herbert Hofmann, the founder of the special show in 1959. In addition the jury of the Bavarian States Prize will look at the works in the special show. The Bavarian States Prize is awarded to 10 contri-bution of applied art within all contribution of the International Trade Fair. This prize is awarded with 5.000€.

More than 552 goldsmiths from 43 countries around the globe applied to participate in the special “Schmuck” (Jewellery) show at the International Crafts Fair in Munich next year. This great interest once again confirms the importance of this event in the context of contemporary jewellery-making and the significance attached to it worldwide. An above-average number of applications were received this year from Australia, Japan and Taiwan, but also from New Zealand and Argentina, the latter having been among the applicants for only a few years now. The selection for 2014 was made especially interesting thanks to the many new exhibitors nominated by the curator Jorunn Veiteberg of Copenhagen. Unusually, “Jewellery 2014” features over 25 new exhibitors, who will be represented in this renowned exhibition for the first time.

For the year 2014, a total of 66 participants from 25 nations were invited to exhibit. Numerically most strongly represented are goldsmiths from Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Denmark and Sweden. The applicants grow younger by the year, an indicator that even before or immediately after finishing their training goldsmiths seek to compete in our special show, present their work to an interested public, experts, gallery owners and museum curators, and rapidly find their way into the jewellery avant-garde. “Jewellery” is an important venue for making a name for oneself in international goldsmiths’ circles, establishing contacts, and not least, witnessing the award of the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Prize on Saturday.

The special “Jewellery” show is characterized by the choice of certain themes which, in the eyes of curator Jorunn Veiteberg, represent salient traits of current jewellery design. As signs of our times and selection criteria, she sees found objects of metal or wood, things that bear definite marks of use, materials that speak an expressive, earthy language, forms and structures reminiscent of architecture, as well as masks, a tendency to mysticism, and forceful color schemes.

Honored as next year’s Modern Classic will be Dorothea Prühl, a goldsmith who lives in Halle. A teacher at Burg Giebichenstein Art College, she not only helped shape an entire generation of young goldsmiths but, over and above her teaching activity, has created an admirable, original oeuvre that holds a very special place within contemporary jewellery design.

Curator of “Jewellery 2014” is Jorunn Veiteberg, a Norwegian art historian who lives in Copenhagen. An arts journalist and exhibition curator, Veiteberg has taught since 2002 at the National Academy in Bergen, Norway. Since 2013 she has been guest professor at the University of Göteborg, Sweden, and chairwoman of the Norwegian Crafts Association. She has published in the fields of contemporary jewellery and ceramics. Veiteberg says it was a great honor for her to make the selection for “Jewellery 2014.” She was especially impressed by the quality of the submissions and their international range. For her as a Scandinavian, it was an enriching experience to see so many submissions from South Korea, Japan, Argentina, the U.S., and many other countries from around the world.

The Handwerkskammer organizes the special shows Exempla, Talente, Modern Masters and Schmuck at the International Handwerksmesse München with the Herbert-Hofmann-Award 2014 ceremony on Saturday 15th March at 4 p.m. We will show in our Galerie Handwerk the exhibition WUNDERRUMA – Jewellery from New Zealand.

« Our daily life is littered with plastic artifacts. Every inevitable chore is facilitated by mass produced implements. Hardly ever do these objects receive any attention, they’re just there. Benedikt Fischer was fascinated by all of these buckets, bowls and containers. Every culture makes use of the things that can be found locally, and this is also the case with the production of a lot of jewellery. In South America brightly coloured bird feathers are employed and on the islands in the Pacific the extraordinary shells provide the impetus. For Fischer the time had come to process the plastic implements that are characteristic for our Western society.
In his graduation work he already had experienced that it was worth it to invest attention in simple objects. He had cut up plastic hardhats to make beautiful brooches, intended as protective mascots. He enriched their surface by modifying it into a velvety, sometimes prickly-furry skin. Turning his attention to a broader field of utensils, innumerable possibilities opened up. The next stage was deciding on which things to choose and to discover surprising excisions. After that he started experimenting with the treatment of the material. Instead of his earlier subtle approach, he decided to attack the surface with more violence. But this aggression is only a façade, for the numerous new pattern that emerged, all offer regular refined textures.
Fischer’s explorations resulted in a group of necklaces, each one an elegant enigma. He made wearable sculpture, which is not hampered by a lot of weight or heavy theories. They are gestures in space, which give the light every chance to ay with the subtle colours, different textures and sensual curvatures. La FLAQ : « Gold, Butter & Ripe Lemons » – Du 20 au 28 septembre 2013

« Gold, Butter & Ripe Lemons » fait référence aux tons jaunes, tantôt doux et subtils ou vifs et alarmants. Dans le domaine du bijou la relation entre le jaune et l’or est forte, puisque le jaune représente, imite ou remplace le métal précieux. En manipulant le jaune d’une certaine manière, on peut le transformer en or !

 We want to shake up the image of traditional jewelry and show that it is a full artistic medium, a means of exchange and communication. Art jewelry is half sculpture half fashion. It is, in fact, wearable art that creates a direct relation between the person who wears it and the one who observes it. This interaction is much more interesting and enriching to us than the ideal spread by the luxury houses of the Place Vendôme, which is outrageously decorative and stripped of any emotional value. We want to create a contrast with this French bijouterie-joaillerie, often very conservative, and that is why it is important for us to realize this project in Paris.
With our exhibition Gold, Butter & Ripe Lemons we seek to show that any material can be of value and bear a meaning in relation to how it’s modified and polished. Yellow color is central in this project. Our pieces are inspired by gold, food and feelings evoked by yellow tones.

Nous voulons secouer l’image du bijou –traditionnel- et démontrer qu’il s’agit d’un medium artistique à part entière, d’un moyen d’expression et d’échange. Le bijou est à mi-chemin entre la sculpture et le domaine de la mode au sens large du terme, c’est un art portable qui crée un rapport direct entre la personne qui le porte et celle qui l’observe. Cette interaction nous est beaucoup plus intéressante et plus riche que l’idéal diffusé par les maisons luxueuses de la Place Vendôme qui est outrageusement décoratif et finalement sans valeur émotionnelle. C’est pourtant pour créer un contraste avec la bijouterie joaillerie française, souvent très conservatrice, que nous tenons à réaliser ce projet à Paris.

Avec notre exposition Gold, Butter & Ripe Lemons, nous voulons illustrer que tout matériau peut gagner de la valeur et du sens selon la façon dont il est modifié et travaillé. Le jaune est centrale dans ce projet, ce qui nous amène à développer le rapport existant avec l’or, la nourriture ou les ressentis que génèrent les tons jaunes.

PREZIOSA 2013 includes two side events at the main exhibition (« Un Certain Regard »), offering visitors additional opportunities for reflection on contemporary jewellery :

- Wearable!
Photo exhibition of worn contemporary jewellery.
The exhibition of jewellery is complemented by a photographic project of the show itself.
The need to show how these jewels can be worn in everyday life, how they interact with the people and with the surrounding space, has led to a specific concept, project, which has been developed using the skill and sensitivity of the particular photographer Eva Sauer.
Twelve jewels, which will be shown in the exhibition, will be chosen, worn and set in particular places of the city of Florence.
The twelve pictures will be displayed in the Museo Marino Marino inside PREZIOSA exhibition, and will also be present in the places where the photos were taken, so as to establish a mutual connection between the exhibition space and the town.

The work of the 8 emerging artists selected based on their personal research in contemporary jewellery, will be the “Young” section of PREZIOSA 2013.

« As a student of the Jewellery Department (Gerrit Rietveld Academie) , I try to gain full understanding of my subject. In order to do that, it is important to go back to the origins. This is also the method I use when approaching a problem. Jewellery is a complex field where on each end someone is trying to push the boundaries of what we consider jewellery. This fact raised the urge in me to find out where jewellery came from in order to understand what it really is.
Considering the extensive history of adornment through the ages, it is hard to think of donning jewellery as anything less than a human need. It appears embedded across religions, cultures, rites, and throughout human activity. It is worn as adornment, to show status or belonging, as a memento and so on. In some instances, societal prescriptions about not wearing any jewellery, or restrictions around the type of ornament a person is allowed to wear, tell an equally strong story about the power and impact of jewellery. The drive goes deeper than the individual reasons that a certain country or religion might produce a given ornament. My belief, supported by historical examples and anecdotes, is that the motivation for jewellery making and wearing is actually quite primal and that this creative instinct speaks to our animalistic nature. In exploring these ideas, I also delve into my own desire to be part of this ongoing history and to create wearable pieces. I am interested in things that endure for long periods, that are maintained in our culture without question, and which are established in our lives as axioms.
Another theme for me is animals. There are similarities of character between Man and animals. Man learned from animals. When we compare the purely visible aspect of jewellery to the most obvious example in animal kingdom, the peacock, it is clear that visual attraction is of major importance. Perhaps we adopted this behaviour from our animal friends. The lion has his mane, the deer his antlers and the peacock tries to impress his female companions with its amazing range of feathers. Man’s power is also related to visual display. The ability to consume, to drive fast cars, to wear sharp clothing, is directly related to the sexual virility or a man or woman. Those who do not have this power, who lack money, become faceless. In his Theory of Evolution, Darwin states that it is more likely for a more attractive male to mate with a female than for one who is physically stronger. To this day you get a pin if you are a brave fighter in a war, the mayor gets a special kind of chain around his neck, top sportsmen are being visually underlined with gold, silver or bronze. What fascinates me most about animals is that they are entirely led by their instincts. When making jewellery I am aiming to get into that state as well. »
