Words cannot say much about jewellery. You have to see, feel and wear the pieces on the body. You have to live with them. Only then, the pleasure of the thought and made, of the formulated and fabulated with ideas, desires and matters, can irradiate fascination.

In Body Jewels, the TextielMuseum presents a large selection of Dutch jewellery from its own collection, alongside a number of high-profile commissions produced in the TextielLab. Jewellery no longer serves only as an expensive status symbol, but has evolved in recent decades into art, fashion and sometimes almost unwearable objects. Body Jewels traces a number of these developments.

In the mid-1960s, a young generation of jewellers turned away from traditional jewellery practices. They set out to design jewellery that was accessible to all, experimenting with everyday, ‘base’ materials such as textiles, plastic and rubber. The use of textiles in jewellery culminated in the 1980s. Several artists with a textile background – such as Mecky van den Brink, LAM de Wolf and Beppe Kessler – gained recognition in the jewellery world and beyond, prompting the TextielMuseum to begin its own jewellery collection.

Both jewellery design and textiles have traditionally been associated with ‘women’s work’ and ‘the feminine’. Consequently, expressions are often dismissed as applied rather than fine art, as the makers would like. The older generation of innovators paved the way for jewellery ‘s recognition as a serious mode of self-expression. Today, those prejudices and value judgements carry far less weight.

The exhibition includes works by Maria Blaisse, Ela Bauer, Ellis Belier, Joke Brakman and Claudy Berbéé, Mecky van den Brink, Brigit Daamen, Iris Eichenberg, Studio Formafantasma, Willemijn de Greef, Maria Hees, Marion Herbst, Bart Hess, Lolkje op de Hoek, Beppe Kessler, Digna Kosse, Sonja Landweer, Marijke de Ley, Felieke van der Leest, Lous Martin, Hill Metselaar, Regula Maria Müller, Chequita Nahar, Evert Nijland, Emilie Pallard and Niels Heymans, Alet Pilon, Winde Rienstra, Margot Rolf, Lia de Sain, Jenna Tas, Annemarie Timmer, Thea Tolsma, Miriam Verbeek, Lie van der Werff and LAM de Wolf.

« Beppe Kessler is not interested in pigeonholing. She was trained as a textile designer and actually did create fabrics and carpets, but she is just as passionate about working on her paintings and has been making jewellery for many years. In the 1980s she was part of the jewellery revolution in The Netherlands and produced beautiful bracelets and necklaces using rubber bands, plastic wesh and spinnaker cloth. In later years she often used balsa wood and textiles. All these activities are connected by Kessler’s infinite curiosity about the characteristics of materials and the, often surprising, results of processing them.
As her introduction in the gallery, Kessler shows pieces from the last two, three years, that testify to her inquisitive, inquiring mind. Also another, extremely important aspect of her work manifests itself in the exhibition: she is an artist who mananges to grant her pieces a poetic quality without having to refer to anecdotes and references.
During an artist-in-residency in the German town of Idar-Oberstein, Kessler researched the possibilities of polishing gemstones: natural erosion processes particularly interested her. For isn’t it a fascinating fact that during polishing the pursuit of beauty coincide with destruction and loss? The polishing process became an important aspect in the making of the jewellery in the show. In some pieces perspex was fitted with irregular facets and combined with fragments taken from CD’s, in a few of the recent works the perspex was polished into clear windows framing imaginairy landscapes.

This special exhibition is the eldest exhibition of contemporary jewellery work in the world. It takes place since 1959 every year during the International Trade Fair in March. Except the transport cost until Munich the participation in the special show is free of charge for you. Three contributions of Schmuck 2013 will be awarded with the Herbert Hofmann Prize. The prize commemorates Dr. Herbert Hofmann, the founder of the special show in 1959. In addition the jury of the Bavarian States Prize will look at the works in the special show. The Bavarian States Prize is awarded to 10 contri-bution of applied art within all contribution of the International Trade Fair. This prize is awarded with 5.000€.

More than 552 goldsmiths from 43 countries around the globe applied to participate in the special “Schmuck” (Jewellery) show at the International Crafts Fair in Munich next year. This great interest once again confirms the importance of this event in the context of contemporary jewellery-making and the significance attached to it worldwide. An above-average number of applications were received this year from Australia, Japan and Taiwan, but also from New Zealand and Argentina, the latter having been among the applicants for only a few years now. The selection for 2014 was made especially interesting thanks to the many new exhibitors nominated by the curator Jorunn Veiteberg of Copenhagen. Unusually, “Jewellery 2014” features over 25 new exhibitors, who will be represented in this renowned exhibition for the first time.

For the year 2014, a total of 66 participants from 25 nations were invited to exhibit. Numerically most strongly represented are goldsmiths from Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Denmark and Sweden. The applicants grow younger by the year, an indicator that even before or immediately after finishing their training goldsmiths seek to compete in our special show, present their work to an interested public, experts, gallery owners and museum curators, and rapidly find their way into the jewellery avant-garde. “Jewellery” is an important venue for making a name for oneself in international goldsmiths’ circles, establishing contacts, and not least, witnessing the award of the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Prize on Saturday.

The special “Jewellery” show is characterized by the choice of certain themes which, in the eyes of curator Jorunn Veiteberg, represent salient traits of current jewellery design. As signs of our times and selection criteria, she sees found objects of metal or wood, things that bear definite marks of use, materials that speak an expressive, earthy language, forms and structures reminiscent of architecture, as well as masks, a tendency to mysticism, and forceful color schemes.

Honored as next year’s Modern Classic will be Dorothea Prühl, a goldsmith who lives in Halle. A teacher at Burg Giebichenstein Art College, she not only helped shape an entire generation of young goldsmiths but, over and above her teaching activity, has created an admirable, original oeuvre that holds a very special place within contemporary jewellery design.

Curator of “Jewellery 2014” is Jorunn Veiteberg, a Norwegian art historian who lives in Copenhagen. An arts journalist and exhibition curator, Veiteberg has taught since 2002 at the National Academy in Bergen, Norway. Since 2013 she has been guest professor at the University of Göteborg, Sweden, and chairwoman of the Norwegian Crafts Association. She has published in the fields of contemporary jewellery and ceramics. Veiteberg says it was a great honor for her to make the selection for “Jewellery 2014.” She was especially impressed by the quality of the submissions and their international range. For her as a Scandinavian, it was an enriching experience to see so many submissions from South Korea, Japan, Argentina, the U.S., and many other countries from around the world.

The Handwerkskammer organizes the special shows Exempla, Talente, Modern Masters and Schmuck at the International Handwerksmesse München with the Herbert-Hofmann-Award 2014 ceremony on Saturday 15th March at 4 p.m. We will show in our Galerie Handwerk the exhibition WUNDERRUMA – Jewellery from New Zealand.

The Beauty Chase – Parcours esthétiques du bijou contemporain. Ce n’est pas Un diamant gros comme le Ritz qui rend fantastique le bijou contemporain, mais la capacité de l’artiste à créer des mondes imaginaires avec les matériaux les plus divers. Le doute et l’innovation, la recherche et l’idée sont au centre du bijou contemporain, il n’y a pas de chemin tracé à suivre. Dans le parcours de la création, le caractère précieux tient donc plus au projet et au travail qu’au matériau “brut” utilisé. Papier, bois, plastique, or ou titane, tissu ou verre : la matière choisie est déjà un mode d’expression esthétique avec l’envie d’être “autre”. C’est justement là l’aspect « fantastique » du bijou contemporain : l’envie de travestissement et de transformation qui le rend surprenant. Le plastique ne semble plus en être, la résine devient bois, l’or se transforme en se mêlant au tissu, au plexiglass, au pigment, le verre révèle sa transparence là où et quand l’artiste le veut. Très développé en Europe du Nord, peu connu par le grand public en France où la tradition de la haute joaillerie éclipse, peut être, tout le reste, le bijou contemporain expérimente, ose, provoque, crée avec des résultats poétiques, irrévérencieux ou ironiques, spectaculaires voire féériques. Et, si on veut emprunter les mots de Tzvetan Todorov, en sa présence: “on accepte le surnaturel”.

L’objet trouvé est un déchet du monde de consommation qui traîne un peu partout en attendant sa destruction, son renouvellement ou sa métamorphose. L’objet trouvé est le souvenir d’une personne absente, un témoin du temps passé.
Les objets trouvés dérangent ma routine quotidienne. Ils attirent mon attention, ils stimulent ma curiosité et nourrissent mon imagination.
Souvent ces objets trouvés et cette routine quotidienne sont des points de départ pour mes travaux. Le processus alternant expérience et réflexion me mène jusqu’au travail final.
Je réponds intuitivement aux objets quotidiens usés et à leurs fragments. Je les laisse perturber ma routine journalière, les habitudes et rituels de ma vie.
Des points de vue et des valeurs communs sont remis en question.
Je crée des bijoux et des récipients innovateurs et délicats. Mes objets évoquent des souvenirs et jouent avec l’imagination.
Le sujet de naturel-artificiel persiste dans mes différents projets.
En général, je suis fascinée par la thématique du naturel et de l’artificiel. Où sont leurs limites de nos jours ? Est-ce qu’il y en a ? Le but de cette exposition est de mettre en relation des travaux qui traitent le sujet du naturel et de l’artificiel en rapport avec nos corps naturels ou plus si naturels. »   Luzia Vogt, 2012

Klassiker der Schmuck 2012
Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen, Deutschland

This year there will be a retrospective exhibition of the work of a « Modern Classic » designer. In 2012 the chosen designer is the German goldsmith Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen. Together with Francesco Pavan, Lorenzen was the first goldsmith to be awarded the Herbert Hofmann Prize, back in 1973. The award presentation ceremony, which this year is being held on Saturday, 17 March 2012, is always one of the highlights at SCHMUCK. Lorenzen, who was born in 1942 in Hagen, Westphalia, taught at the « Staatliche Zeichenakadamie » in Hanau from 1974 to 1985, while also acting as a visiting lecturer at the « Hochschule für Gestaltung » in Pforzheim, at which college he then, in 1985, took up an appointment as a professor. He continued to teach there in the jewellery design department until retiring in 2008.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse, SCHMUCK will as usual be setting off abroad, this time to Valencia in Spain. Each year since 2006 the exhibition has been hosted in a range of countries, among them Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (Municipal Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua), the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York) and the French town of Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor).
