Le mudac conserve deux ensembles remarquables de bijoux contemporains, sa collection et celle de la Confédération. Fortes de près de 200 pièces, elles reflètent l’étonnante évolution d’un domaine en perpétuelle ébullition. Le bijou contemporain s’est affranchi, dès les années soixante, d’une tradition considérée comme dévitalisée. Revendiquant un statut artistique à travers la diversité des esthétiques, les créateurs ont été nombreux à dépasser la fonction décorative pour s’interroger sur les dimensions sociales, culturelles et relationnelles du bijou.
Dans les années 1980, le bijou s’est montré clairement contestataire. Explorant ses limites, utilisant quelquefois la performance et l’installation, il s’est rapproché de l’art contemporain. Toutefois depuis une vingtaine d’années, il est autant le lieu de manifestes que le moyen de revendiquer une expression individuelle.

Parmi les récentes acquisitions de la collection de bijou contemporain, le mudac compte le collier Bretzel de Sophie Hanagarth, qui conjugue culture populaire et mythologie classique, le collier 125 lapins de Natalie Luder, fait de dents de lapin et de fil de soie ou le collier Frozen de Susanne Klemm.

The Stedelijk Museum ‘s-Hertogenbosch presents Bernhard Schobinger: the Rings of Saturn. This first retrospective of the Swiss artist Bernhard Schobinger will show about a hundred items of jewellery that provide a picture of his disturbing method. Like a modern alchemist, Schobinger collects all kinds of materials and then transforms then into pieces of jewellery that contain references to present and past, value and recycling, beauty and decay.

The exhibition presents the objects as anarchic products and idiosyncratic collector’s trophies. Each piece tells a story, such as the ring Time Out. This case was rejected for a watch, but it was a precious find for Schobinger. He literally took the time out of the object to suggest the need to take time out every now and then. His Flaschenhalskette (‘bottlenecklace’) is ambiguous not only in its title but also in its meaning: Schobinger turned a necklace into a dangerous object. It is this challenging mentality that is the focus of the exhibition. 
Schobinger: ‘I discover an idea or a vitality in the objects I find.  They have been marked by everyday use or destroyed by people or by nature. A great potential lies in that destruction, and I make use of it.’ Bernhard Schobinger is one of the leading avant-garde artistic jewellery designers of today. The artist has an international reputation as a provocative, innovative artist’s artist. His unorthodox way of working excites the public and collectors as well as serving as a source of inspiration for other designers. Schobinger received the prestigious Françoise van den Bosch Award in 1998. This award is presented by an international jury in honour of an influential oeuvre in contemporary jewellery design

Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography is the first museum exhibition to explore how contemporary jewelry artists transform and add new meaning to the pervasive images of this digital age.  Drawing inspiration from historic daguerreotypes to manipulated digital images, international jewelry artists explore changing views of beauty and the human body; examine social, political, and cultural issues; probe perceptions of memory and desire; and question the broader relation of jewelry to society and personal identity, issues central to the contemporary experience.

 

More than 80 renowned artists from over 20 countries are represented —including

Gijs Bakker, Wafaa Bilal, Jordan Doner, Mari Ishikawa, Jiro Kamata, Sooyeon Kim, Iris Nieuwenburg, Kara Ross, Gabriela Sanchez, Bernhard Schobinger, Bettina Speckner,

Joyce Scott, Kiff Slemmons, Andy Warhol and Noa Zilberman.

 

The connection between photography and jewelry extends back more than 150 years to the invention of the photographic process.  The exhibition will provide historical context for this evolving relationship by presenting outstanding nineteenth-century pieces, many of which have never before been exhibited. In recent years, both photography and art jewelry have changed dramatically, and the exhibition will present cutting-edge videos and installations that will provide viewers a broader perspective of contemporary jewelry now.
Organized by MAD’s Curator of Jewelry, Ursula Ilse-Neuman, Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography will be on view from May 13 to September 14, 2014.
Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Ursula Ilse-Neuman, MAD’s Acting Chief Curator Lowery Stokes Sims, Dutch author and jewelry curator Liesbeth den Besten, photography expert Mark Durant, Curator of Decorative Arts at the Toledo Museum of Art Jutta Page, American author and Metalsmith editor Suzanne Ramljak, photography historian and critic Lyle Rexer and German author and critic Ellen Maurer Zillioli.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a full range of educational programming, including lectures and panels for adults, workshops for young visitors and families, in-house demonstrations of jewelry making, curator-led tours of the exhibition, and a variety of film screenings.

Hélène Aziza’s gallery will participate to the « Circuits Bijoux » in Paris w/ an exhibition titled “Beyond precious” presenting jewellery that challenges traditional notions of preciousness.

 

Le mot «bijou» évoque immédiatement une notion de «précieux», de matériaux nobles, de valeur (monétaire).

Egalement, s’associe au mot bijou la notion de «portable». Or, il s’agit ici de montrer comment des créateurs réussissent à donner une nouvelle définition du précieux, en transformant des matériaux récupérés, en utilisant des matériaux «pauvres», ou en associant éléments précieux et non précieux, mais toujours de manière iconoclaste.

* Design Bijou suisse Du 3 au 27 octobre 2013. Tout d’abord, grande première en France, un éventail des artistes les plus représentatifs du bijou suisse qui parraineront la jeune génération.

* Puis, la HEAD–Genève (Haute Ecole d’art et Design) prendra le relais, selon une scénographie des étudiants du master Design/espaces et Communication pour montrer les créations en Bijou et accessoires issues de l’école.

Le bijou contemporain suisse sera présenté en octobre à la Fondation Suisse. Cet évènement rassemblera, dans le pavillon Le Corbusier, quinze maîtres du bijou suisse et quinze designers de la nouvelle génération qui exposeront sous leur parrainage.
