EXPO ‘Organic Metal’ – Atta Gallery, Bangkok (Thailand) – 17 mai-17 Juin 2012

« Organic Metal » Bernhard Stimpfl-Abele  – Until June 17, 2012

« There is a huge possibility to show new qualities within material investigations of natural bread dough, lemon or potatoes for example but also in modern time used materials like polystyrene and metal ».

My work « Organic Metal » is about the old, the new and the ambivalence in between. I want to preserve, or possibly conserve, a snapshot of the aging process and a specific moment in the life/death of organic materials, mostly bread or bread dough. These organic materials are also base of my jewelry pieces.

SCHMUCK 2012 – « Ädellab – The State of Things » – Die Neue Sammlung /The International Design Museum, Munich (DE) – 17 Mars-29 Avril 2012

Ädellab – The State of Things. Konstfack Stockholm. Schmuck.
Die Neue Sammlung

The starting point is the human body which is construed as the link between the person’s outer and inner worlds – this concept defines the design approach taken at Ädellab, the Dept. of Jewelry at the Konstfack Stockholm, University College of Arts, Crafts and Design. On the basis of the existing Dept. of Metals, Ädellab was founded in 2004 by Dutch jewelry artist Ruudt Peters and has since 2006 been emphatically influenced by Danish jewelry artist Karen Pontoppidan, who is head of Ädellab by now. The department¿s methodology cuts across both geographical borders and artistic ideas. Ädellab has made a name for itself with a decidedly contemporary approach that explores the possibilities afforded by the medium of jewelry as an important and independent form of expression today. A persons own ideas, observations, fascinations and obsessions can just as much be lent form as can emotions, issues of identity or interpersonal debate.

Karen Pontoppidan comments: ‘The final-year projects undertaken by exam students are not a matter of fulfilling an educational task, but demonstrate the individual need for expression that spawns creation. The artistic expression and therefore the work of the graduates cannot therefore be understood only in terms of intrinsic logic or the wish to understand the existence of the state of things. The work was created because an artist, a human being with experiences, feelings, dreams and failures, wanted the pieces to be.
Exhibition curated by Karen Pontoppidan

» Ädellab – The State of Things, works by students from Konstfack Stockholm.  This show was set up using red ropes that snaked down a hallway to the back and all became tangled together in one giant ball under a white neon sign. Each rope had the work of one artist so the viewer had to follow the rope along to discover them. There was a great variety and experimentation of materials in these works, I believe there were some made from dried sweet potatoes. »

Jacqueline de JONG, NLpommes de jong‘ – 2009  varying sizes cm – jewelry – mixed media (gold-dipped potato skin)

For her current exhibition, de Jong has created a series of potato bijoux, “Pommes de Jong.” They consist of potatoes laid out to dry until they are totally shrivelled, and then dipped, roots and all, in a bath of molten gold, with surprising results – jewel-like objects in weird and wonderful forms.
Her interest in integrating the humble potato, which she cultivates in her garden in France, into her art, began in 2001 with her series of paintings inspired by Malevich, as the hair of The Farmer’s Wife (”Potato Hair”). This was followed in 2002 by a painted dialogue (”Harvest”) with the pioneering Russian artist. This theme continued with “Aardappeltaal’ (Potato Language), a collaboration with Jennifer Tee at the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven in 2003. In 2006, participated in the Biennale di Ceramica dell’arte (curated by Roberto Orth), in Albissola, Italy, with an installation of ceramic objects of “baked potatoes” for the home and garden of the Danish artist Asger Jorn (1914-1973).

EXPO ‘BROOCHMANIA’ – Galerie Rob Koudjis, Amsterdam (NL) – 5 juin-3 juill. 2010

BROOCHMANIA
a project of Ädellab,
the jewelry department of  Konstfack University College of Arts, Craft & design,  Stockholm - Here are the results of study about brooches that students have been doing during the last year.

http://t.douban.com/lpic/e247267.jpg

« Ädellab, the jewellery department of the Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm has developed in recent years into one of the leading educational centers of its kind. The jewellery made by its graduates is as surprising as it is pioneering. The Rob Koudijs Gallery gladly accepted professor Karen Pontoppidan’s invitation to participate in the Broochmania project.
During the last school year, students closely studied every facet of brooches in a series of five workshops. The ultimate goal of Broochmania was the realization of pieces crystallized from the training that would be suitable to exhibition in a gallery. Ward Schrijver was invited to Stockholm to serve as the curator selecting pieces for the exhibition. He chose brooches from 13 artists, ranging from first-year students to recently graduated masters.
The diversity of the work is spectacular: colourful, complicated collages contrast with clearly recognizable forms; the techniques vary from wildly proliferating growth processes to montages using existing perforated material. The distinctive individuals who study at Ädellab learn to manipulate every aspect of the brooch phenomenon as a means of artistic expression. «  (Copyright Galerie Rob Koudijs)
