Take 5 readymade materials purchased at the dollar store & give value to something invaluable by creating 3 wearable pieces of jewelry. This challenge feeds into the contemporary jewelry artists’ interest in working with non-precious & alternative materials.
The group includes three American and three European artists. They are Bruce Metcalf, Demi Thomloudis, Timothy Veske-McMahon, Sofia Björkman, Réka Lörinz and Gisbert Stach.
Each artist received a box containing five standard size white envelopes, a small white towel, three white erasers, three CDs, and a can of Diet Coke. The materials were chosen because they are all white and echo a metaphorical blank page. These items can also be manipulated in multiple ways.

Statement from the organizers:
A modern metalsmith/metal artist can be found working in traditional metals as well as in nontraditional materials. The designs can range from the classic to the extravagant, and the techniques can either be centuries old or decidedly current. The wide range of expression preferences, design options, materials, and processes has lead within our field to unfavorable misconceptions, misunderstandings and in some cases even outright disdain between artists. Each side considers itself superior to the other, seemingly not appreciating the clear advantages, benefits, and experiences each faction brings to the table. Quoting from Damian Skinner’s 2013 SNAG keynote lecture in Toronto:
“We are all family. Sometimes, family members don’t speak with each other, but we still are one big family. Let’s recognize this fact.”
Can our field overcome family division and send a much-needed signal to the metals + jewelry community? We appreciate and respect our historical past and acknowledge that current materials have a rightful place in jewelry/object making. Arriving at this message is the goal of this exhibition.”  – Brigitte Martin and Rachel Timmins

SCHMUCK 2013 – Munich (DE) – PROGRAMME – 6-12 Mars 2013

SCHMUCK is an international jewellery competition which is staged every year in March as part of the Internationale Handwerksmesse. For over fifty years SCHMUCK has been the jewellery sector´s premier exhibition. From among the many applications received from designers to exhibit in SCHMUCK, a single juror makes his or her own personal selection of those whose work will be presented. This juror is generally an international curator and expert in contemporary jewellery design. In 2006 the Danner Foundation took over as patron of the exhibition. The organiser is the Handwerkskammer für München und Oberbayern (Chamber of Trades and Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria), and the venue host is the Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH.

THE RING – the most common piece of jewellery can be full of meaning, a personal statement sometimes showing itself as a technical miracle or purely decorative and beautiful. It can demand attention, be an invitation to play, be filled with tears and secrets – and is to be worn for one day or for ever.
In homage to the ring Galleri Hnoss has invited all the jewellery artists exhibited in the gallery since the start in 1997 to produce one ring each. The result is now to be seen in the exhibition THE RING – jewel forever. The show consisting of over one hundred rings is a vibrant collection of different expressions, thoughts and forms

In connection with the exhibition on September 9 we are also arranging aseminar : The Ring – jewel forever. The theme is the ring seen from different perspectives. We are very proud to announce the speakers: Anna Schetelich from Galerie Oona, Germany, Professor Otto Kunzli, Germany, and Manuel Vilhena, jewellery artist from Portugal. Moderator is Love Jönsson, crafts critic and guest lecturer at HDK, University of Gothenburg. The seminar is a collaboration between Galleri Hnoss and the Department of Jewellery Art at HDK, with support from Gothenburg Crafts Association, Estrid Ericsson’s Foundation, Wilhelm and Martina Lundgren Fund, and the family Wikanders Foundation.
