« My work reflects my intimate world. I often construct abstract versions of rooms, buildings, and cities that mirror my dreams and fears. Some of them relate to memories I have, people in my past or people around me. Yet others deal with my needs for protection, my fear of being locked in or shut out, and my fascination with visible and invisible boundaries.
My work is about finding refuge and freedom.
I am inspired by the everyday rhythms in life; how we move, interact, build, love and heal.
And I’m fascinated by shelters, industrial construction work, and the rules of aerodynamics.
My most recent works show a slight change in shape and form. I wanted to create pieces that represent movement, or rather, the ability to fly.
The collection as a whole shows my view on the ever-changing dynamics between the needs of the individual and the safety, strength and demands of the collective. »

Side expo by Juan Harnie (BE) and Ana Margarida Carvalho (PT)
Ana Margarida Carvalho and Juan Harnie got paired in The Contemporary Jewelry Exchange 2016. Selected jewellers from around the world participated in this project and were paired to find a common interest or theme and make a piece for one another.
Both Ana and Juan look for beauty in things that are not necessarily beautiful to others. Combining plastics and metal is one of their common interests and neither of them shies away from using bright colours.
The pieces presented in this exhibition are similar to the two pieces they originally made for The Exchange. And even though both of them have their own interpretation of beauty and where to find it, their pieces accompany each other really well.

EXPO ‘Arrhythmia ‘ – Beyond Fashion, Antwerp (Belgium) – 14 Mars-20 Avril 2013

Carolina Apolonia: Arrhythmia

The heart. Unnoticed but for its consistent beat, it determines whether we live or die. The heart is thrilled when in love, swells with inspiration and good spirits, is flooded by passion and broken by grief.
My work, this collection, is about the resilience of the human heart; its rhythm pulsating with great joy, trouble and adversity. I used natural materials very close to the human skin: leather and parchment. By hand-stitching these materials to silver, I create new structures to be worn almost as an extension of the body; as outward expressions of the rhythms inside.
My mother taught me at a very early age how to stitch. Stitching holds memories of long happy hours working with her. I think I am drawn to its time-consuming, repetitive and meditative nature: it forces me to slow down and gives me a sense of freedom: that I can use the needle to connect and repair anything. Most of the leather I use for these pieces is old and recycled. So are the used book covers. Old and worn-out materials tell stories, they carry tales about how they’ve been cherished or abused. The stitching brings the old materials together, heals them, thus creating new narratives out of old histories.  Carolina Apolonia

Exhibition ‘Patro(o)n’ and ‘Wim Ibensprijs 2012’
The exhibition ‘Patro(o)n’ gives consideration to daily rituals, compositions, work grinds and other patterns. At the same time this exhibition about contemporary jewellery provides a platform to see “free of any pattern”.

« Karen Vanmol seeks in her work harmony to unite two worlds.
She is looking for a delicate balance between elements of the busy, modern city life and references to the silence and the slowness of nature. Her jewelry combine in a sensitive way clean organic shapes, and building materials with natural materials. Such as ground plans of a house look like farmland, a forests look like skyscrapers, in Karens work blurs the boundary between town and countryside. »

« …my recent work presents deteriorated architectural forms as objects of adornment. As a series of brooches, they reference jewelry’s historical representation of wealth, while their forms capture degraded fragments of local architecture. Folds and cuts in iron surfaces invite peering into their voids, where delicate patterns set in colored enamel offset the dark metal façade. Reminiscent of wallpaper, the patterned interior surfaces speak of a careful care and consideration put into adorning ones own personal space. Voyeuristic glimpses inside the pieces reveal worn surfaces suggestive of domestic interiors.   » (2010)

My work reflects my intimate world. Often I construct abstract versions of rooms, buildings, boxes, nests, clusters, and cities that mirror my feelings, dreams, and fears. Some of them relate to memories I have, people in my past, my family history, others to the people around me. Yet others deal with my needs for protection, my fear of being locked in or shut out and my fascination with visible and invisible boundaries and territories. I am intrigued by the process in which walls simultaneously define and shut out space. I love the imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete; cycles of growth and decay, eroded geological structures and abandoned buildings inspire me. I often make unorthodox combinations of materials to create tension and balance. Sometimes I use found objects: quiet mirrors of other intimate worlds.

« Previously trained as an architect, I have always envisioned buildings as machines. Architectural elements are designed to form spaces that manipulate activities and movement. While jewellery cannot divorce itself from the human body, the most intimate space lies in between the body and the object(s). I approach jewellery design as constructing spaces on the topographic contours. »
