Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography is the first museum exhibition to explore how contemporary jewelry artists transform and add new meaning to the pervasive images of this digital age.  Drawing inspiration from historic daguerreotypes to manipulated digital images, international jewelry artists explore changing views of beauty and the human body; examine social, political, and cultural issues; probe perceptions of memory and desire; and question the broader relation of jewelry to society and personal identity, issues central to the contemporary experience.

 

More than 80 renowned artists from over 20 countries are represented —including

Gijs Bakker, Wafaa Bilal, Jordan Doner, Mari Ishikawa, Jiro Kamata, Sooyeon Kim, Iris Nieuwenburg, Kara Ross, Gabriela Sanchez, Bernhard Schobinger, Bettina Speckner,

Joyce Scott, Kiff Slemmons, Andy Warhol and Noa Zilberman.

 

The connection between photography and jewelry extends back more than 150 years to the invention of the photographic process.  The exhibition will provide historical context for this evolving relationship by presenting outstanding nineteenth-century pieces, many of which have never before been exhibited. In recent years, both photography and art jewelry have changed dramatically, and the exhibition will present cutting-edge videos and installations that will provide viewers a broader perspective of contemporary jewelry now.
Organized by MAD’s Curator of Jewelry, Ursula Ilse-Neuman, Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography will be on view from May 13 to September 14, 2014.
Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Ursula Ilse-Neuman, MAD’s Acting Chief Curator Lowery Stokes Sims, Dutch author and jewelry curator Liesbeth den Besten, photography expert Mark Durant, Curator of Decorative Arts at the Toledo Museum of Art Jutta Page, American author and Metalsmith editor Suzanne Ramljak, photography historian and critic Lyle Rexer and German author and critic Ellen Maurer Zillioli.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a full range of educational programming, including lectures and panels for adults, workshops for young visitors and families, in-house demonstrations of jewelry making, curator-led tours of the exhibition, and a variety of film screenings.

DECADENCE & DISARRAY : SPQ PROJECTS

Decadence and Disarray explores the unexpected ways in which the ornate, the opulent, and the glamorous crumble and decay, and the subtle beauty of these transformations. The work selected addresses this theme in a variety of ways.

Open six days a week, SPQ Projects will serve as an extension of Sienna Gallery, which will continue to represent the finest in contemporary art jewelry from around the world. Upcoming Sienna Gallery exhibitions include Found Subjects, which features jewelry and mixed media by award-winning jeweler and longtime Sienna Gallery artist Sondra Sherman, and COSTUME COSTUME, a curated collection of work by emerging jewelers which explores costume jewelry as a subject for new work.

Sienna Patti established SPQ PROJECTS in 2010 to represent and work with emerging and established artists creating engaging and thought provoking work.
The artists bridge the worlds of art, craft, and contemporary design with innovative use of materials and mediums. Many are engaging conceptually with traditional craft based techniques and ideas. Artists listed are represented but our projects bring in many artists for collaborations.

Think Twice: New Latin American Jewelry Showcases Contemporary Jewelry From The Region For The First Time In a U.S. Museum

« Think Twice: New Latin American Jewelry, presented by the Museum of Arts and Design from October 12, 2010 through January 8, 2011, will feature unique work by nearly 60 jewelry makers, representing over 20 Latin American countries. Among the artists included are the Brazilians Mirla Fernandes, Dionea Rocha Watt, and Claudia Cucchi; Valentina Rosenthal and Walka Studio from Chile; the Argentinians Elisa Gulminelli, Francisca Kweitel, and Silvina Romero; Jorge Manilla, Martacarmela Sotelo and Eduardo Graue from Mexico; and Miguel Luciano from Puerto Rico. 
The show has been guest-curated by the Netherlands-based, Mexican-born architect and historian Valeria Vallarta Siemelink. 
Objects of adornment have played a significant cultural role throughout Latin America’s history, from the spiritually potent jewelry of the pre-Columbians to the eye-catching ornaments worn by Mexican drug gangs to advertise their status and menace. Now a new generation of jewelry makers working outside the field’s conventions are examining how this complex relationship with physical adornment evolved–and why. 
Think Twice aims to bring the audience a clear picture of the landscape of contemporary jewellery in Latin America and its development in the last 10 years, showing the way in which visual artists and jewellery makers born or living in Latin America view and relate, through jewellery, to such a vast and diverse continent. 
The exhibition, conceived by Otro Diseño, is born out of a passion for jewellery as a medium of personal and cultural expression and of the conviction that the fresh, intense and highly creative work of Latin American jewellery makers outstandingly represents and nurtures the culture they live in and therefore greatly enriches and diversifies the international landscape of contemporary jewellery.
“The new Latin American jewelry must be appreciated for what it is. One shouldn’t impose stereotypes or resort to clichés,” says guest-curator Valeria Vallarta Siemelink. “Far from being an imported concept from the West, jewelry-as-art in Latin America is very much a product of the region’s history and its diverse and dynamic modern societies.” 
“This is a very special show,” adds Ursula Neuman, MAD’s jewelry curator. “This jewelry is virtually unknown in the United States. The artists’ realize their sophisticated concepts through intriguing choices of materials and techniques, creating unique works that present a fascinating amalgam of indigenous cultural elements and the latest trends in international contemporary jewelry design.

” To bring clarity to Latin America’s complex culture and history, the exhibition is organized around three themes, addressing the region’s past, its unique fusion of ethnic influences, and its ever-changing socio-political realities. 

History, Memory, Tradition
The tension between tradition and modernity is crucial to Latin American history. Heritage and memory, both personal and collective, are among the subjects expressed by these artists through pre-Columbian and colonial jewelry methods and traditional craft techniques. Take the Colombian Mariana Shuk. She has made a series of rings using traditional ring shanks ordered from mega-jewelry suppliers. She creates a ring by interlacing two identical shanks. Its shape determines which techniques—stone setting, enameling, filigree—she will employ to customize it in the Colombian colonial style. The process has produced a perplexing assortment of rings that confronts past and present, value and insignificance. By contrast, another Columbian artist, Linda Sanchez, creates her jewelry pieces by employing weaving techniques that have been used by an Amazonian tribe since ancient times. 
A Flair for Invention
The artists in this section are some of the boldest jewelry makers anywhere. Skilled at improvisation, they make brilliant use of a rich variety of native materials along with such everyday objects as balloons and drawer handles. A spontaneous attitude and a contrary vision are central to their daring approach. The Mexican Andres Quiñones can make an exquisite choker from sticks of bamboo, a few broken guitar strings, a handful of freshwater pearls and silver wire, all of the materials collected from garbage dumpsters in Mexico City. Colombian Helena Biermann presents Hit the Road, a series of brooches that collect the insects stuck to a car in its 286 km trip from Munchen, Germany to Domaslav, Czech Republic. 
Forging Identity: Latin America as a Source of Inspiration 
These jewelry makers are creating an individualistic language, expressive of who they are and where they come from. Art, religion, money, violence, tradition, family, gender are among the themes that define their lives, uniting their collective and individual identities. Foreign-born artists, who are somehow bound up with Latin America or have had a profound impact upon it, are included in this section. Alcides Fortes, for example, was born in Cape Verde, trained as a gold and silversmith in the Netherlands, and today lives and works in Mexico. He specializes in politically charged jewelry, creating such works as a necklace made out of the porcelain portraits recovered from the graves of a family killed in the Mexican revolution. The piece reveals both an admiration for Mexico’s culture and history as well as a loathing of its corruption, economic disparities, and veiled racism. By transforming the common objects of his native land into fetishized commodities, Miguel Luciano examines how American consumerism has affected Puerto Rican culture. Plantainum, for example, is a series of necklaces and pendants featuring a platinum-covered plantain. The shell is seductive and pristine, but underneath the fruit is rotting. 
Figurative and abstract, conceptual and symbolic, traditional and experimental, contemporary Latin American jewelry is tremendously varied, and it is this diversity that enables it to communicate its ethnicity and to transcend it. » (Klimt02)

« Trumpet sound ! Some time ago, the call for entries went out for 500 Felt Objects, a book slated for fall 2011 release*. After seeing Fashioning Felt, the terrific show she curated, I enlisted Susan Brown of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum to serve as the juror for this book. We’ve been reviewing the images to include in the book, and I’ve come across some really exciting jewelry made with this extraordinary material!

« Die Perle ist durch ihre schimmernde Oberfläche, die Ebenmäßigkeit ihrer Rundung – oder gerade gegenteilig durch die bizarren Formen – und ihre geheimnisvolle Entstehung bestimmt. Ihre Schönheit, ihr Glanz und ihre weiße Farbigkeit ließen sie zum Attribut der Göttin Venus werden.
Schon früh wurde die Perle in verschiedenen Kulturkreisen im Schmuck verarbeitet und mit symbolischem Wert belegt. Sie war zudem Zeichen für Macht, Status und Reichtum. In jüngerer Vergangenheit wurde die Perle in der Perlenkette zum grossbürgerlichen Statussymbol und geriet darüber etwas ins Abseits. In den letzten Jahren lässt sich nun ein neues Interesse an der Perle erkennen: Am Beispiel der Perle wird nicht nur über die traditionellen Funktionen von Schmuck reflektiert, sondern es werden auch neue innovative Formen der Gestaltung mit der Perle erprobt.
Die Ausstellung der Galerie Handwerk München beschäftigt sich mit diesen ungewöhnlichen Formen der Gestaltung nicht nur im Medium des Schmucks, sondern auch in der Installation, dem Bild und dem Objekt. Im Vordergrund steht jedoch der Schmuck.Werke von 43 internationalen Künstlern werden präsentiert, um einen
Überblick über die verschiedenen Tendenzen bei diesem aktuellen Thema zu geben. Nach einer jahrelangen Vernachlässigung der Perle, gerade im Bereich des Autorenschmucks, fällt nun ein intensives Interesse dafür auf. Dieses wurde auch wieder in der Sonderschau ›Schmuck‹ auf der Internationalen Handwerksmesse 2010 in München deutlich. Nach einer langen Zeit, in der Minimalismus, eine gewisse architektonische Konstruktionsweise und Funktionalität bei der Gestaltung von Dingen bzw. eine stark persönlich und kritisch geprägte Auffassung beim Schmuck im Mittelpunkt standen, ist nun wieder eine neue Freude an der Pracht und dem Reichtum, ein Rückgriff auf Ornamente und eine Formensprache festzustellen, die dem Barock entlehnt ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund scheint dann auch die Beschäftigung mit der Perle, deren Gestaltung im Barock einen Höhepunkt erfuhr, keinesfalls erstaunlich.
Perlen aus verschiedenen Materialien und der Reichtum in ihrer Formgebung werden an Beispielen internationaler Schmuckkünstler vorgestellt. Es sind Arbeiten aus Australien, Belgien, Deutschland, Finnland, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Italien, Japan, den Niederlanden, Norwegen, aus Österreich, der Schweiz, der Tschechischen Republik und den USA vertreten.«

Alors je vous le dit de suite  : hélas, je ne comprends pas un traitre mot de l’allemand …. et le charabia généré par les « outils traducteurs » ne m’aide pas franchement …. je vous le laisse (ci-dessous) rien que pour rire un peu ….

La perle est, par sa surface miroitante, la régularité de leur cycle – ou tout simplement le contraire prévue par les formes bizarres – et leur origine mystérieuse. Leur beauté, leur éclat et leur couleur blanche, ils sont laissés à l’attribut de la déesse Vénus.
Déjà Früh la perle dans les différentes cultures a été générée dans les bijoux et recouvert d’une valeur symbolique.  Elle était aussi un symbole pour le pouvoir, le statut et la richesse. Dans un passé récent, la perle dans le collier à grossbürgerlichen symbole de statut et quelque chose est tombé en désuétude. Ces dernières années, peut maintenant détecter un nouvel intérêt pour la perle: l’exemple de la perle est non seulement à refléter les fonctions traditionnelles de bijoux, mais aussi de tester de nouvelles façons novatrices de la conception à la perle.
L’exposition traite de la Galerie Handwerk Munchen à ces formes particulières d’organisation non seulement dans le milieu des bijoux, mais aussi dans l’installation, l’image et l’objet. L’objectif, cependant, est le règne de 43 Schmuck.
Données comme numéro un dans les différentes tendances  du présent . Après des années de négligence, en particulier dans le domaine des bijoux d’auteur, la perle suscite maintenant un vif intérêt.  Ce fut encore plus évident dans l’émission spéciale  « Bijoux » à la Foire commerciale internationale 2010 de Munich. Après un long moment, le minimalisme d’une certaine manière, la construction architecturale et de fonctionnalité dans la conception des choses et une vue très personnelle et critique dominé les bijoux dans le centre se trouvait, est aujourd’hui à nouveau une joie nouvelle dans la grandeur et la richesse, un Rückgriff ornements sur un formulaire et la langue afin de déterminer le baroque est dérivé. Dans ce contexte, la tâche semble à la perle, la conception d’un pic dans le baroque appris à ne pas surprenant.
Perles de divers matériaux et de la richesse dans leur conception sera présenté avec des exemples de Schmuckkünstler internationale.

EXPO ‘LINGAM’ – Galerie du WCC-BF, Mons (Belgique) – 8 mai-22 aout 2010

« L’exposition LINGAM met en scène 121 interprétations d’un symbole ancestral de fertilité : le lingam.
Représentation symbolique du phallus et du dieu Shiva, le Lingam représente la force créatrice à la base de l’existence de tout l’univers. Dans les religions hindoue et bouddhique, c’est par le biais du lingam que l’on honore quotidiennement le dieu Shiva, la représentation phallique n’y est nullement mise en relation avec le sexe.
Dans la culture occidentale, le phallus évoque la sexualité et le plaisir. Alors qu’il fut un temps où le Christianisme et la culture judéo chrétienne mettaient également en avant la sexualité comme acte créateur positif. Depuis la séparation du corps et de l’esprit, cet aspect en a été banni et d’une référence sacrée, la sexualité est devenue un mal nécessaire.
Avec l’exposition LINGAM, son commissaire, le plasticien Ruudt Peters (NL), désire rétablir cette signification initiale ainsi que sa dimension spirituelle.

Partant de sa fascination pour le lingam dont il a découvert l’existence il y a dix ans lors de voyages en Asie du Sud-est, il a eut envie de proposer à des artistes et designers contemporains de créer un objet symbolisant la fertilité, chaque créateur interprétant le sujet en se basant sur sa propre sensibilité et sa perception personnelle du thème.
121 créations ont ainsi vu le jour et sont présentées dans une scénographie où la signification originelle du lingam est soulignée par la présentation des objets contemporains en compagnie de leurs modèles originaux. »

Après deux étapes particulièrement remarquées à Stockholm et Utrecht, l’exposition Lingam sera présente cet été aux anciens abattoirs de Mons où la Galerie du WCC-BF accueillera les œuvres des 121 créateurs, issus de 24 pays à travers le monde, qui se sont prêtés au jeu de la réinterprétation de ce symbole fort, à la fois si spécifique et universel.

Walking the Gray Area : A dialog on global mobility, identities and contemporary jewellery

Walking the Gray Area will premiere at Galeria Emilia Cohen in Mexico City, within the frame of the Gray Area Symposium Mexico 2010.

Contemporary jewellery, with its exceptional ability to communicate and create associations directly connected to specific cultural and personal settings and backgrounds seems to be circumscribed to a rather westernized discourse. It has become necessary for contemporary jewellery-makers to rethink the ways they connect with others.

40 artists, from an uncertain total number of  involved countries, take a walk on the gray area and explore,  through the already ambiguous field of contemporary jewellery,  issues related to global mobility, identity and territories in dispersion and the way they perceive and have been affected by this phenomena during their rambling around the world.
Walking the Gray Area is a collective, comissioned exhibition curated by Valeria Siemelink and Andrea Wagner, that bring together 20 Latin American and 20 European jewellery makers and artists who ocationally work with jewellery as a medium, into a dialogue about jewellery, global mobility, contemporary identities and its personal and/or collective implications.

The curators of Walking the Gray Area, selected each 20 artists from their respective continents:  Latin America and Europe. The artists were individually selected based on their artistic excellence, technical abilities and creative response to various subjects. As a collective, the group was conformed based on the on the tensions between their discourses and practices, their varied and experimental approach in the use of materials and techniques and on the rich possibilities that lay on the exchange among them. There is, however, one thing that all the invited artists have in common : like the curators, they are or have all been migrants; born in one place, living, working or studying in another one.

The artists work in couples and were paired randomly: the names of the Latin American artists were written on a piece of paper, which was folded and placed in a bowl. The same was done with the names of the European artists. The curators had fun taking turns to pick a name from one bowl and pairing it with a name from the other bowl. 20 couples were formed and, for the last six months they carried out a dialogue through the pages of a weblog specially created for this purpose. The artists conducted their dialogues in ways they find interesting or relevant: exchanging conversations, stories, images and even materials. Besides their periodical postings in the blog, the artists exchanged letters and parcels through the post, organized Skype sessions, phoned and even meet in person. The weblog has allowed the artists to reach a diverse, distant and growing audience, having attracted over 10 thousand visitors from nearly 90 countries.

Through the exchange both artists and curators aimed to respond to a variety of questions: How do they respond to changing definitions of mobility, locality, globalism, migration?  How do the changing conceptions of identities relate to their being and practice? How do they reconcile their roots with their routes? What kind of exchange can take place between artists from areas of the world where contemporary jewellery is perceived and dealt with in such different ways? How can they relate to and diverse, moving, fast changing audience?
