EXPO ‘Not Too Precious’ – National Craft Gallery, Kilkenny (Ireland) – 22 Janv.–30 Mars 2016

 Not_Too_Precious exhib
(Attai Chen on left – Carina Chitsaz-Shoshtary on right)
Not Too Precious explores inspirational work by 25 international jewellers using materials for their expressive potential rather than for their intrinsic value. Radical artist jewellers of the late 1960s and 70s vigorously rejected the idea that jewellery should be considered ‘precious’ simply because of the materials of which it was made. Today, the use of a huge variety of materials in jewellery is far more accepted, but economic pressures are putting that freedom of artistic expression at potential risk as people revert to traditionally ‘valuable’ materials for ‘safety’. Not Too Precious challenges preconceptions about ‘non-precious’ materials by encouraging us to consider ‘accrued value’: what talented makers bring to their work through their ideas and skill.
The selected artists, who currently work in the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, create innovative, skilfully-made jewellery that is insightful and culturally resonant. Sometimes poignant, sometimes witty, their work communicates at many levels. It is above all honest and – for want of a better term – not too precious.

CHRISTEL VAN DER LAAN

« Usually materials form the starting point for a work, or often I have a title in mind and the piece develops from there. Much time is spent arranging and drawing until I find harmony and tension between compositional elements »

Chistel van der Laan - 'Priceless Bangle', 2004. Gold plated sterling silver, Dyed nylon swing tags.Christel Van der Laan – ‘Priceless Bangle’, 2004. Gold plated sterling silver, Dyed nylon swing tags.

« Collecting, arranging and making things have been a part of my life since I can remember.
It is a passion I have shared with my parents Els and Piet, grandparents, Bep, Wim and Miep, aunts Marion, Olga, Atie, Mieke and Liesbeth, uncles Adri,Theo and Tom who between them have/had careers or an interest in everything from antiques, tribal art, textiles, photography, contemporary art, furniture and design to plant and animal life.
Emigration to South Africa as a child, back to the Netherlands and then Australia, presented dazzling natural environments and cultures for exploration. Often my extended family would visit and trips into the « veld » and later, « bush » would yield unexpected booties and a wealth of impressions, while second-hand shops and roadside vendors were a source of many extraordinary finds. My mother was my principal partner in these adventures and when she died in 1994, my focus shifted.
In the last few years these precious items, or later finds with associations to particular times and places, have begun to play a more meaningful part in my jewellery.  There is humour and sadness in some of these pieces, even guilt, while others are simply a celebration of the beauty of individual elements, transformed when placed next to others.
Usually materials form the starting point for a work, or often I have a title in mind and the piece develops from there. Much time is spent arranging and drawing until I find harmony and tension between compositional elements.
A material I am currently exploring is ceramic honeycomb block, known more for its heat distribution qualities during soldering than as a focal point in a piece of jewellery. I am mesmerised by its beauty and the possibilities it presents aesthetically and conceptually.
Challenging notions of preciousness in conventional jewellery in a way that is gently humorous and sometimes ironic remains an enduring theme in my work. I love word plays and how they create new layers of meaning when used in the title of a piece.
Most importantly, I want to make surprising, beautiful objects that move people, to seek and to think and to smile. What could be more precious? »

EXPO ‘The Plastic Show’, Velvet da Vinci Gallery, San Francisco (US) – 1er-31 Oct. 2010

‘The Plastic Show’, Velvet da Vinci Gallery, San Francisco

The Plastic Show (click to see more about this show)
(Rebecca Hannon earrings- ‘Modular Multi-Color’ – Formica, sterling silver)

‘The Plastic Show’, an exhibition featuring work from the recently published Lark Jewelry Book 500 Plastic Jewelry Designs. The Plastic Show features 250 pieces by 75 artists employing a variety of plastic materials such as resin, latex, rubber, epoxy, and thermoplastics, many of which are reused or recycled. Having been embraced by artists and designers, these materials are now firmly woven into the language of contemporary jewelry making. Used alone or in combination with traditional elements, these substances can, with certainty, be classified as precious. Thanks to the use of plastics, conventional components like silver, gold, platinum, and gemstones are now only part of the jewelry-making equation. The jewelry in this collection represents the best work being produced today by artists who use plastics as a foundational element in their pieces.

ça me réjouit et me met en joie ! :-)
