Snapshot – photography project with Diana Laires:
Words cannot say much about jewellery. You have to see, feel and wear the pieces on the body. You have to live with them. Only then, the pleasure of the thought and made, of the formulated and fabulated with ideas, desires and matters, can irradiate fascination.
What should remain is the joy and the desire to understand and wear these pieces of jewellery as symbols of your own personality. /Jens-Rudiger Lorenzen (adapted) in Contemporary Jewelry, Stuttgart, 1989

REVERSO - Claude Schmitz: Morphing

REVERSO - Claude Schmitz

(Claude Schmitz Brooch: Pink fruits, 2014 Gold, pink opal)

If discrete classical elements of the physical-material world, such as gold, stone, and patina, were to be synonymous with the works of the classical period, nothing would be more dreary than their continuous use. In the context of jewellery design, the references inherent in the elements’ characteristics and meanings become instantly legible, yet do not remain rooted in the classical realm.
« Claude Schmitz manipulates and works materials, thus referencing tradition – not without a certain irony – while never wholly releasing us into the ambiguity of randomness. All alterations, modifications and manipulations are placed in a temporal context, but they never represent a linear environment. Nature – inorganic and organic – is not self-referential, but grows in the hands of Claude Schmitz into its apposite worldly form. » Dietmar Tanterl, artist (Munich)

EXPO ‘Naturel/Artificiel’ – Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h, Montreal (CA) – 25 Mai-8 Juill. 2012

NATUREL/ARTIFICIEL
COMMISSAIRE/CURATOR LUZIA VOGT

VOUS ÊTES CORDIALEMENT INVITÉ AU VERNISSAGE DE L’EXPOSITION vendredi 25 Mai de 17H À 20H.
OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION FRIDAY, MAY 25 FROM 5 TO 8PM.

 EXPO Naturel-Artificiel

Introducing established and emerging artists from the U.S., The Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, Estonia, Japan and Israel, this exhibition, curated by Luzia Vogt, proposes these artists’ visions of the environment today, questioning the place of Nature, immaculate and pure, in our controlled, contemporary industrial world. Fashioned with natural and synthetic as well as traditional materials explored in unexpected ways, these works reveal with poetry and defiance these artists’ extraordinary interpretations.

»   Luzia Vogt, 2012

EXPO ‘Claude Schmitz: Fraction ()’ – Galeria Reverso, Lisbon (PT) – 19 Avril-25 Mai 2012

Claude Schmitz : Fraction ()

Reverso(Claude Schmitz  Brooch: Red Leaves 2011 – Silver, lacquer)

It would be easy to draw parallels between the different aspects of Claude Schmitz’s oeuvre. This could be a generally ingenious exercise, aiming to make sense of his artistic practice, pay homage to its creator, and present the public with material for discussion. However, this is not the intention. If there were no fractures in the work, it could not be part of a whole – and the whole, in turn, could not relate either to itself or to the work of other artists. While Claude Schmitz’s work is meant to be a part of the general discussion, it is no less the result of his self-reflection, which primarily manifests itself in the execution. What would art be if we neglect execution, if we abandon the quest for function? It would be reduced to mere ‘built objects’, entirely devoid of meaning.

By titling his pieces, the artist shows an intention to differentiate them. However, he could also have a different intention in mind, provided that one does not lose sight of the totality. Claude Schmitz titles his works by referencing former transformations of form and text, whose conceptual programme requires the wearer to take a stance and become involved, or engaged, on a certain level, either actively or passively, yet remaining below the surface. Anyone observing his easy manipulation of traditional materials might think his work is the product of craftsmanship alone, but this is not the whole story. Nothing escapes logic, which is analogous to a complex equation and can, in much the same way as a mathematical formula, be beautiful.  Dietmar Tanterl, artist (Munich)

Tithi Kutchamuch loves flowers, but she would rather see them growing in the garden, so her vases are for wearable flowers, or rings, instead – Vase Garden is a set of simple, clear glass vases that were created to hold silver flower rings also of Kutchamuch’s design.

Tithi Kutchamuch- As she puts it, « The flowers complete the vases, in the same way the ring completes the wearer
