BIJOUX with a HOLE ….

Comme le dit Joo Hyung Park, « Beauty (is) in Imperfection » ….. Même discourspour Brooke Marks-Swanson : « « I am drawn to the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. …..  My object is to cause the viewer to speculate, imagine and to investigate… »

« Borders separate but also unite » (Octavio Paz)
Historically the relationship between Mexico and the United States has been complicated, deep, and conflicted. Due to geography, this relationship is unavoidable and comprised of many underlying currents: economic, political, social, cultural, ecologic and ideological.
La Frontera (The Borderlands) is the physical space where the relationship between Mexico and the U.S is most evident. In recent years, drug trafficking and violence have made it the focus of almost daily news. However, the extremely porous nature of the border allows not only the illegal passage of arms and drugs, but also ideas, money, projects, families, and culture.
The border is an environment of opportunity both legal and not. Nearly 2000 miles long, the U.S. – Mexico border is the most frequently crossed international border in the world. Companies use differences in labor and environmental regulations to their advantage and create discontent on both sides of the border. Since the 1980s economic and political refugees from Central America have swelled populations at the border and migrations across it. The construction of the 700- mile U.S. – Mexico Border Fence of the past several years is the most tangible symbol of failed politics.
The exhibition LA FRONTERA seeks to explore this physical space and what it represents. This is why we want artists either born in either of these countries or who live in either of these countries to express how they understand the border.

There is only a perspective seeing, only a perspective ´knowing´, and the more affects we allow to speak about one thing, the more eyes, different eyes, we can use to observe one thing, the more complete will our ´concept´ of this thing, our ´objectivity,´ be.
Friedrich Nietzche, On the Genealogy of Morals, trans. Walter Kaufmann and R.J. Hollingdale (New York: Random House, 1967), p. 119.
My Jewelry is inspired by the fragmentary aesthetic of informal architectural construction, temporary spaces and Bricolage. The work is realized through a neurotic process of improvisation and spontaneity, which exposes unplanned moments within industrial materials such as cement, steel, and wood. I am interested in how these moments act as ornament and how the jewelry’s’ seemingly humble construction exposes and celebrates the act of making and the interaction of the materials themselves. Through the lens of jewelry and changes in scale, weight, and texture, these assemblages and designs ask the viewer to consider new associations to these materials and their intimate relationship to the body as adornment. - Demi Thomloudis

Demi Thomloudis

graduate student at San Diego State University. check me out at www.demithomloudis.blogspot.com

« Being from the large city I can’t say that my connection with the natural world has ever been that strong.  As a child of course I played outside and rolled around in the dirt from time to time, but I was never really taught to appreciate these natural occurrences as special or secret.
As and adult I have grown to be more aware of my surroundings and the natural elements that many of us take for granted.  In this work I am hoping to manifest a relationship with nature that I never had.  By creating fictitious gesture of to what I perceive as being natural is somewhat of a stepping-stone for me to come to terms with what I have been neglecting.  By physically putting these wearable objects into the ground I am symbolically bridging the gap between the natural elements and myself,  trying to get closer to a certain understanding.  »

Malaika Najem-‘Forgotten’ pendant

This piece (‘Forgotten’ pendant) is about child soldiers and is called “Forgotten”. A subject that sadly still exists in 3rd world countries that are in war whether in Africa, the Middle East or Asia. The average child soldier is under the age of 18 and is forced and manipulated in doing and committing horrors that they are not aware off due to the use of drugs or brainwashing. The child is just an instrument, just a number; just a slave to the gun…the gun is the symbol of power.” (Malaika Najem)

Bety Majernikova - "WRAF" serie - 2008-2009 In this series I try to reflect the omnipresent "war" of today's women with the world surrounding themBety Majernikova ‘Wraf’ series necklace -2008-2009

« In this series I try to reflect the omnipresent « war » of today’s women with the world surrounding them. On one hand I criticize that nowadays society expects from women unrealistic results in many aspects. On the other hand I also aim criticism at women, because they themselves put up with these unrealistic criteria and strive to comply with them. I choose well known symbols as a gun, flower heart… and I am using this cliché symbols on the purpose. I work with it; I build on it a new composition with readable meanings. Dark beats applied to perforated spots on the pieces of jewellery are a symbolic reminder of a gunshot – a bullet – an attack. They are made out of different materials – hematite, marble, glass, steel and pearl-shell. »
