 ‘The Plastic Show’, an exhibition featuring work from the recently published Lark Jewelry Book 500 Plastic Jewelry Designs. The Plastic Show features 250 pieces by 75 artists employing a variety of plastic materials such as resin, latex, rubber, epoxy, and thermoplastics, many of which are reused or recycled. Having been embraced by artists and designers, these materials are now firmly woven into the language of contemporary jewelry making. Used alone or in combination with traditional elements, these substances can, with certainty, be classified as precious. Thanks to the use of plastics, conventional components like silver, gold, platinum, and gemstones are now only part of the jewelry-making equation. The jewelry in this collection represents the best work being produced today by artists who use plastics as a foundational element in their pieces.

En bonne « fille des années 60-70″ je voue un amour inconsidéré au plastique ! Il faut dire aussi qu’un événemant particulier de ma vie a grandement joué en ce sens : petite, vivant à Thessalonique (nord de la Grèce), on y subissait de nombreux tremblements de terre. L’un d’eux a déclenché un gigantesque incendie où ma famille a TOUT perdu. Mon ère a pleuré son Toulouse-Lautrec, moi mon nounours, et ma mère son argenterie qui a entièrement fondu …. MAIS …. les pompiers nous ont remis ce qui a vait été sauvé : la VAISSELLE en PLASTIQUE, rangée dans le placard au-dessus de l’évier, près du réservoir d’eau ……… c’était le premier signe ! ensuite, remeublement oblige, mes parents se sont entièrement remeublés en « design tout plastique » : sièges en ABS de Guy Paulin, tables plastique de Vico Magistretti chez Artemide, et toute « l’invasion » de plastique orange des années 68 (vous visualisez ? la balance terraillon en plastique orange ? le tourne-disque Phillips mallette-portable-ouvrable ? les miroirs à bords arrondis de chez Artemide ?  les tables de nuit de chez Kartell ??? ) ………et voilà ! j’AIME le plastique !! :-) ses infinies possibilités de formes, ses couleurs « décapantes », son humeur joyeuse  ……….. bon, d’accord, il n’est pas écologique DU TOUT et, parait-il, rend stérile ….. mais … ça me réjouit et me met en joie ! :-)

« The images used in this series of jewelry pieces are appropriated from a pulp magazine printed during the 1950’s titled Secrets. The magazine photos were overly dramatic and stagy, both tragic and unintentionally comic, but somehow they captured the zeitgeist regarding female transgression. These reconfigured images freeze a moment in the daily drama of our lives and, set as jewels, they serve as paeans to the mundane.
By first manipulating, then converting these images to enamel decals (and firing them onto the surface) I can exploit the historical conventions of enameled portrait miniatures, and, in particular, 18th century decal transfers. Hand-painted enamel portrait miniatures were luxury items but with the development of the decal transfer process, in the mid-18th century, such jewels were affordable to a wider audience. Then as now the enameled image serves to provide a democratized view of time and place. » (Kathleen Browne)

« Diane is best known for her fabricated, one-of-a-kind jewelry.  Her mixed media compositions often combine characteristic pictorial imagery – invented or borrowed from historical sources – with fabricated metal forms and a diverse range of art media. Her work is an unconventional marriage of material and content that references a myriad of interests including:  memory, metaphor, figuration, romanticism, historical ornament, art history and iconography.«

« I am intrigued by the psychological power of pictures.
I am enchanted by symbolism, allegory and metaphor.
I am seduced by beautiful, iconic images.
I am mesmerized by the picturesque.

In my one-of-a-kind, mixed media art jewelry I combine two-dimensional pictorial space and three dimensional jewelry forms.  Instead of mounted gemstones, pictures form the central visual and conceptual elements of my fabricated brooches, lockets and neckpieces.

My diminutive pictorial expressions are either invented or borrowed from historical sources.  I use a variety of art materials and techniques to create the images which are chosen for their emotional and intellectual impact as well as their aesthetic value.  

The fabricated jewelry forms that support and contain the images are contemporary yet suggestive of historical styles of ornament.  They are primarily fabricated from metal, but often incorporate more eclectic materials.  They are characterized by strong symmetry and bold scale, and sometimes function much like a shadow box or picture frame.

My intent is for each piece to express a strong underlying emotion or idea and to evoke a sense of preciousness derived from its intimate scale, richness of materials, attention to detail, and heirloom-quality craftsmanship. » (Diane Falkenhagen)

I collect the seeds of inspiration by taking close-up photographs of flowers and plants, which I encounter in my daily surroundings or during traveling. I like to observe how a bloom is set on the stem, how the petals unwrap to reveal an enclosed surprise and how leaves sprout from branches, from which I can almost hear the popping sounds. « The work I create is a balance of my desire to create something that is simple and also complex. Piercing the surface of the metal, I can create intricate surface patterns which often disguise the silhouettes of whimsical creatures. « This body of work is concerned with revelation of the interior, with slicing past the surface. Inspired by botanical illustrations and photomicrographs, it has allowed me to both explore the idea of exposing intricate internal structures with devices such as the cross-section or selective staining of cells, and pay tribute to imagery that has cultivated a sense of wonder in me. « In my mixed media jewelry I combine two-dimensional pictorial space and three-dimensional jewelry forms. Instead of gemstones, pictures form the central elements of my fabricated brooches, lockets and neckpieces. My diminutive pictorial expressions are either invented or borrowed from historical sources. I use a variety of art materials and techniques to create the images which are chosen for their emotional and intellectual impact as well as their aesthetic value. The jewelry forms that support the images are contemporary yet suggestive of historical styles of ornament. « In my current body of work I seek to examine how jewelry functions as an image, a means to construct desire, and the consequence of transfer from image to object and back to image. Found images are appropriated from a variety of sources, including magazines and various publications then printed on thin sheet of metal paper resembling the historical tin-types. This game of skill requires that the player complete the image by putting the jewels in to the impressions. « My goal is associating the idea of intimacy in jewelry objects to the body while the rope functions as a vehicle which conveys metaphorical meaning of connection. When the piece is on the body, it seems to penetrate or bind the wearer. I feel that it expresses the physical and conceptual connection between piece and wearer.
