« PEU de REINA », une association de 7 créatrices issues de l’Escola Massana

« Pie de rey, es la herramienta que utiliza el joyero para medir y calibrar con exacta precisión los diámetros y gruesos de las planchas, hilos y tubos que utiliza durante el proceso de construcción de las joyas.
Peu de Reina, es el juego de palabras en catalán, con el que se hacen llamar un grupo de jóvenes joyeras que se conocieron en su paso por la Escuela Massana de Barcelona y que una vez acabados sus estudios decidieron unirse y formar una asociación para difundir de manera conjunta el trabajo de cada una.
Rosa Batalla, Gemma Draper, Teresa Estapé, Guigui Kohon, Francisca Kweitel, Itxaso Mezzacasa, Rita Ruivo, Estela Saez y Blanca Sánchez, componen esta formación que acoge variedad de discursos y planteamientos de trabajo, desde que se formó en septiembre del año 2000 y que piensa seguir creciendo con nuevas incorporaciones.
Entre sus actividades destacan organizar charlas y talleres, preparar exposiciones y muestras de joyería y posibilitar el intercambio con otros países.
Pero Peu de Reina antes que un grupo de joyeras, es un conjunto de personas que desde el referente de la joyería pretenden hacer un comentario crítico e inteligente de la realidad que las envuelve. Sin utilizar grandes tecnologías, recurriendo únicamente a la herramienta más fantástica que la humanidad ha tenido jamás, las manos conducidas por el poder de la imaginación, construyendo unos objetos que nos han de ayudar a encontrar un humanismo que a menudo parece olvidado. » (Ramón Puig Cuyás)

Please find enclosed the program of the Schmuck 2011 during the International Trade Fair in Munich.

This special exhibition is the eldest exhibition of contemporary jewellery work in the world. It takes place since 1959 every year during the International Trade Fair in March. Except the transport cost until Munich the participation in the special show is free of charge for you. Three contributions of Schmuck 2011 will be awarded with the Herbert Hofmann Prize. The prize commemorates Dr. Her-bert Hofmann, the founder of the special show in 1959. In addition the jury of the Bavarian States Prize will look at the works in the special show. The Bavarian States Prize is awarded to 10 contri-bution of applied art within all contribution of the International Trade Fair. This prize is awarded with 5.000 €

The selection of the 62 exhibits to feature in the special show SCHMUCK 2011 was made by Dr Rüdiger Joppien (Head of the Department of Art Nouveau and Modernism at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg), a recognised expert in the applied arts. In total over 650 designers had submitted applications to be granted a space to exhibit within SCHMUCK 2011. Featured in the exhibition are the works of a number of designers of international renown – names like Kimiaki Kageyama (Japan), Ted Noten (Netherlands), Lisa Walker (New Zealand), Ike Jünger (Germany) and Peter Bauhuis (Germany). For the first time this year the exhibition will also include work from China, Mexico and Turkey.

Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

 

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »

Visitors who want to find out more about contemporary craft and design have the opportunity of taking part in a guided tour of «Handwerk & Design». These tours, which are free of charge, start each day at 13:30 (meeting point: stage in Hall A1, no registration needed).

Estela Saez Vilanova Girona 1977 (Spain)

Studied jewellery at Escola Massana in Barcelona, whereon received the Massana Prize Award in 2001. Studio assistant of Professor Ruudt Peters in Amsterdam from 2005 to 2007 developing at the same time her project “Terra”.
Winner of Talente Prize in 2006 Munich, Germany.
Beside her work as a jeweller, she has been invited as a guest teacher and lecturer in Copenhagen, Mexico, Stellenbosch, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, Florence, Stockholm and Barcelona. From time to time she also organizes and promotes jewellery-related events.
Exhibits her work since 1996 in Galleries and Museums around the world; Holland, Czech Republic, Finland, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Sweden, Italy, U.S.A, England, Mexico.
She has received different Incentive Grants, from the Catalan Government to promote and develop her personal work.
Her pieces have been published in different magazines; catalogues and specialized books in jewellery.
Since 2005, lives and works in Amsterdam, Holland.

« Synaesthesia in Estela’s nest
The colours of a cherished, familiar landscape, somewhere in the foothills of the Pyrenees leading to the Mediterranean Sea. A blue air one could bite; a yellow light one could touch. Blue and yellow: primary colours, homesick colours.
The velvety touch of a slightly moist wooden spoon; the smell of a small leather pouch soaked by rancid wine; metal tools sprinkled with earth after working in the fields… Unusual sensations inspire new radical objects looking at the rural utensils of yesteryear.
Silver that looks like leather, leather that looks like skin, the skin of a nest, the nest of oneself. A metaphor for fragility and the need of a shelter. From darning and stitching, seams and patches arise on the objects’ surface. Metal is treated like a soft material. When Granny’s skills are adopted by the goldsmith, senses are pleased and confused. « The main topic of the event is the Mediterranean as the “sea between lands, border and connection sea between these lands”.
The Mediterranean is the line where north-west and south-east of the world meet and a crucial area for the future of humankind.
This point of contact may become, as the writer Samuel Huntington says, “the starting point for dialogue between civilisations”, where common features are mixed with differences and the respect for “diversity” is based on understanding and knowing other people’s nature.
Each community should learn from the others and teach to them: it is possible to break the “game” aiming at creating monolithic cultures only through these connections.
This was probably not understood in the past, but now a defined direction should be outlined and followed to achieve this objective.
Therefore, the “voice” of the Mediterranean is not coming from the past, but from the future, according to that balance between land and sea, belonging and freedom, where a living model does not demonize our need for establishing links or our need for freedom.
If it is true that hope is in the future, then assigning this message to an extremely contemporary and innovative art expression can help us achieving this objective.
This is the reason why Contemporary Jewellery was selected, as this is a sector of advanced research and experimentation halfway between design and tradition, as an expressive language to disseminate this message.

Through Contemporary Jewellery research, it is possible to highlight and give value to the cultural diversities characterising all communities living around the shores of this Sea.
This project has several purposes: promote the cultural heritage that has always characterised the Municipality of Nocciano, i.e. its Medieval Castle and Picture Gallery beyond the regional and national borders.
At the same time, this event includes the possibility to create a tourist-cultural movement between the Mediterranean Village and Nocciano, which are a few km far from each other.  »

« L’exposition LINGAM met en scène 121 interprétations d’un symbole ancestral de fertilité : le lingam.
Représentation symbolique du phallus et du dieu Shiva, le Lingam représente la force créatrice à la base de l’existence de tout l’univers. Dans les religions hindoue et bouddhique, c’est par le biais du lingam que l’on honore quotidiennement le dieu Shiva, la représentation phallique n’y est nullement mise en relation avec le sexe.
Dans la culture occidentale, le phallus évoque la sexualité et le plaisir. Alors qu’il fut un temps où le Christianisme et la culture judéo chrétienne mettaient également en avant la sexualité comme acte créateur positif. Depuis la séparation du corps et de l’esprit, cet aspect en a été banni et d’une référence sacrée, la sexualité est devenue un mal nécessaire.
Avec l’exposition LINGAM, son commissaire, le plasticien
Ruudt Peters (NL), désire rétablir cette signification initiale ainsi que sa dimension spirituelle.

Partant de sa fascination pour le lingam dont il a découvert l’existence il y a dix ans lors de voyages en Asie du Sud-est, il a eut envie de proposer à des artistes et designers contemporains de créer un objet symbolisant la fertilité, chaque créateur interprétant le sujet en se basant sur sa propre sensibilité et sa perception personnelle du thème.
121 créations ont ainsi vu le jour et sont présentées dans une scénographie où la signification originelle du lingam est soulignée par la présentation des objets contemporains en compagnie de leurs modèles originaux. »

 What does Contemporary Jewellery mean?

The following question is part of a questionnaire sent by the Italian Association for Contemporary Jewellery to its members : Italy and France, whilst boasting a long history in high-end jewellery, by and large remained untouched by the experimental jewellery movements of the ’60s (most active in the US, England, and Holland). Today, the studio Jewellery community in both countries remains small, and I found from experience that the otherwise simple task of defining one’s activity is unexpectedly daunting for us, and continues to fuel many of our conversations.

This is a ‘French’ answer to an Italian question, written in English: a nice metaphor for our international community of gold-tinklers, but one which complicates the task of defining jewellery – the English use alternatively design jewellery and contemporary jewellery, the French may say creation (i.e. creative) jewellery, the Italians art goldsmithing, while American readers will prefer art or studio jewelry. Having trained in the UK (and to simplify matters), I used the expression Contemporary Jewellery, though, as you will see, I am not at all convinced that it does the profession much justice.

What does Contemporary Jewellery mean?

Not very much, to anyone outside the profession; but the question is a helpful reminder that:
1. In most countries, the debate will never find an audience outside the actual community that launched it.
2. This is a simplistic label, falling short of the profession’s complex heritage and range of interests.
But it’s a tricky one, and I tried to list some of the ways one could answer it:

Contemporary Jewellery is a type of practice – understood as the contemporary offspring of a craft-based design activity that finds its origin in medieval workshops. Such a definition stresses contemporary jewellery’s historical past, and finds antecedents in the British and American Arts & Crafts movements, the renewed late XIXth century interest in manual skills (as a last stand against industrialisation), and the emergence of radical jewellery movements in the 60s: it underlines the notions of individuality, craftsmanship, and its troubled relationship to the production mainstream;

or a type of object: poised between high-street jewellery and art (the former’s glorified other, the latter’s poor relative), we know what it’s not (‘just’ manufactured artifacts for wearing), and what it wants to be (the expression of individual talent that reflects on, and sometimes influences, contemporary culture), much less what it is.

A few distinctive characteristics, however, seem to be beyond debate: the human body as a general working area; an open attitude to methods and material that echoes art’s own agenda, complicated by the notion of wearability; the distinctiveness we associate with individual expression; and an emancipation from consumer goods’ vocation to ‘just’ satisfy consumer desires.

It could also be defined as a market (I follow here the argument that cultural artifacts are defined less by methods of production than by distribution, accessibility and ultimately, potential impact on a larger consumer base). In most countries, a limited number of galleries take care of both distribution and promotion – while the designer-maker is expected (if (s)he wants to make a living) to be represented by at least five galleries, and complement consignment sales by direct, off-the-anvil transactions. From my point of view, the Contemporary Jewellery market works in ways similar to the art market, but on a scale so small, that its lack of visibility questions its existence.

So then: most jewellers would agree that Contemporary Jewellery is a fast-evolving profession at a crossroad between craft, design, and art, currently ridged by identity concerns. However, I think that the problem, rather than one of identity, is one of image. Although the lack of an established definition has contributed to an extremely rich range of output -personal answers to a collective question- it seems that diversity stands in the way of a more cohesive front, one that would focus on explaining to people that there is a life after Cartier, Pomellato and Tiffany’s. And the unsuspecting public still lumps the practice together with its craft-based past, judges its production on a par with high-end (or any other) jewellery, and considers artistic ambition rather like a presumptuous fancy (unless one equates artistic with skilled, meaningful or committed to self-expression).

This happens at least for two reasons:

Firstly, there are not enough of us to rally a larger population to Contemporary Jewellery’s standards: exposure is limited by the output (there are comparatively few jewellery design programs, fewer graduates that stick to the trade, and not many pieces produced per year per jeweller). This scarcity of active jewellery makers is further complicated by our cultural antagonism with serial reproduction -and therefore, bigger distribution 1). A cynical bystander would add: this is a micro-profession, which means little appeal to the press, anemic cultural budgets, no specific courses in the history of Contemporary Jewellery (to my knowledge), and therefore, no history. As a result, Contemporary Jewellery is always deemed a subsidiary activity, on the margin of mainstream jewellery creation. Secondly, designer-makers are by nature a/o trade, uncommunicative, or certainly not prone to enthusiastic pamphlet scribbling. Who’s ever heard of Contemporary Jewellery, outside its confidential network of galleries and specialized clientèle?

The situation, and this is my point, demands more than just communication: instead of shunning assertive promotion/information strategies (for fear of contamination?), we must resist inertia from within and without that confine Contemporary Jewellery to its ill-defined (but restricting) marginal position, and explore new means of proliferation.

So we should communicate more. And explain our intentions. But in the end, let us not be too intent on defining our practice as one thing only: if anything, I would even drop the Contemporary or Studio used to qualify this jewellery: whatever specific meaning it may have had is now superseded by a vague sense of institutionalized otherness.

Let’s be proud, and call it jewellery.

About the Author : Benjamin Lignel (1972) first trained in philosophy & literature, then in art history, at New York University, and finally in furniture and jewellery design, at the Royal College of Art in London. Hence his interest in the functional object, complicated by a penchant for art, and further perverted by sustained exposures to literary works, often momentous, sometimes pertinent.

 

 

 

 


 Footnote1) The dominant discourse by jewellers and gallerists alike tend to equate value with uniqueness. While the argument certainly has weight from a mercantile point of view, it seems very outdated when applied to artistic value: not only have multiple editions (either executed by fine artists or copied from original work) been produced since the XVth century, as a way to reach a wider audience, but anyone in today’s contemporary art world trying to champion a pre-Warholian superiority of the unique, hand-made piece would be laughed at.
