EXPO ‘I am an Other’ – Eretz Israel Museum, Tel Aviv (IL) – 10 Juin-20 Nov. 2012

« I am an Other »

The sixth exhibit of Israeli jewelry deals with the perception of « the other self, » or the alter ego. Fifty-three artists participating in the exhibit set out on an inner journey, the process resulting in diverse expressions: virtuosic jewelry-makers who are usually meticulous in their work chose to free themselves of the constraints and make room for expression ; some used organic materials; some turned to figurative creation, thus giving the human form an expression of « the other self, » while other artists chose the abstract to convey biographical moments. Some preferred the multitude so as not to focus the idea of « the other self » on a single item, while others preferred simplification and catharsis. It appears that the majority of Israeli jewelry-makers do not wear the jewelry they create, and some wear no jewelry at all. For this exhibit they created jewelry for themselves.

Israeli Jewelry - Shenkar

« The selection of an abstract concept for this exhibition – Alter Ego (the Self as Other) — generated an extensive and riveting dialogue with participating artists. The process that resulted engendered layered and varied works that reflect the multi-faceted nature of this concept.  The underlying premise the artists were invited to consider was the notion that the ornamental artifact — an intimate object placed directly on the body — can represent parts of the Self, including its inverse or hidden elements.  The ornament also draws the gaze of others; the visual cues it offers subtly influence other forms of communication.
The roots of the term alter ego come from ancient Greek philosophy.  When Zeno of Cittium, founder of the Stoic school of Greek Philosophy, was asked, “what is a friend?” he responded: “allos ego,” that is, alter ego.  In a similar vein, Aristotle suggested that a friend should be treated like a second self.  Over time, the word ego came to mean “I” in Latin.  In the modern era, Sigmund Freud extended the word’s meaning when he defined it as a central element of the psyche.  The alter ego has been seen by psychology mainly as the inversion of the way the Self normally presents itself publicly.  But the notion remains vague and elusive.
The alter ego has many cultural expressions: in pop and rock music, where artists embody fictional figures through which they can present new and experimental musical content; in the world of Comics, where an everyday person turns into a superhero; in literature that deals with two sets of personalities within a single person, and more.  Philosophers discussed the alter ego in the context of reciprocal relations, and as part of the effort to understand the Self.  As it turns out, scientists have found that a “mirror neuron network” in the brain allows us to experience the Other’s gestures as though they were our own, so that observing others is an inseparable element of self-understanding.
After they were introduced to the varied cultural manifestations of the alter ego, the jewelry makers were invited to design a jewel that would reflect their own alter ego.  Some artists chose to shed the rigid discipline that characterizes their virtuoso work, and allowed chance to influence the artifact, suggesting an alter ego that is out of control; others chose a figurative image of a face or person meant to convey a miniaturized Self, or created prostheses and additions to the face, embodying aspects of the self that go unexpressed in daily life; several chose animals to convey the complex relation with the Other – an ally or a distant and threatening figure.  Others chose images suggesting motion, such as boats representing sailing from the exterior inwardly and vice versa.  Some artists worked with abstract forms generated from a clear, personal context, forms that permitted a different self to momentarily show through; others worked with round shapes that express the Yin Yang principle and with it the notion that we must harmonize the contradictory elements of the self.  Finally, several artists related to the written word or a writing implement as a way to represent either the Self or the alter ego.
It seems that the exhibition highlights the fact that jewel-craft – a realm of intricate detail – spans a great deal of conceptual space.  Jewelers contract entire worlds into physical artifacts measured in centimeters, but the variety of responses engendered in the vast arena surrounding a single idea is near infinite. » Nirith Nelson,  Curator

SCHMUCK 2012 ‘Corpus’ – Galerie Spektrum, Munich (DE) – 16 mars-28 avril 2012

Ruudt Peters – Corpus

 SCHMUCK 2012 'Corpus' - Galerie Spektrum, Munich (DE) - 16 mars-28 avril 2012 dans Allemagne (DE) peters-lumbusRuudt PetersCorpus « Limbus »

« Between body and spirit.
Flat, amorphous shapes in subdued shades of dark-grey. Ruudt Peters’ new jewellery appears to be austere and abstract until the eye is drawn to the occasional sharp edges, or intentionally modelled surfaces. Peters is always on a quest for spirituality in his work as his earlier work has demonstrated. One line of approach he did not consider in the past was Christianity. Was it too predictable a choice, or was it too close for comfort in the artist’s view?
From the abundance of motifs Peters chose what lies at the heart of Christianity: Jesus as the saviour of mankind. For a thousand years artists have searched for an apt representation of the crucifixion: from the simplicity of Romanesque depictions to an increasingly explicit image of a virtually naked man. The body of the Christ figure becomes increasingly pronounced: muscles starting to develop, the abdomen curving, the loincloth losing its innocence. The religious symbol takes on increasingly complex meanings.
It was a challenge for Ruudt Peters to add his own interpretation to this iconography. In a study in which the crucifix was initially sawn into bits and pieces and then joined together again instinctively, the artist was not only guided by religious connotations. Other aspects present themselves: the meeting of bodies, expressiveness of touch, intimacy. In the final product Peters stresses abstract, veiled shapes on the front and keeps the recognizable parts for the sides and back.
Western society is becoming increasingly secularized, and Ruudt Peters CORPUS jewellery hits the spectator like a bolt out of the blue. At its first presentation at the COLLECT art fair the reactions were unusually outspoken. Curiosity, amazement and appreciation competed for first place, often combined with wariness about the wearability of the pieces. For should you judge this work on the basis of the artistic stament made by the maker, or as a personal testimony? Is it about body or spirit? In his work the artist extends a hand to the spectators, ultimately it is their responsibility to provide an interpretation and decide on the value of a work of art. «   Ward Schrijver  (© Galerie Rob Koudijs)

Klassiker der Schmuck 2012
Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen, Deutschland

This year there will be a retrospective exhibition of the work of a « Modern Classic » designer. In 2012 the chosen designer is the German goldsmith Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen. Together with Francesco Pavan, Lorenzen was the first goldsmith to be awarded the Herbert Hofmann Prize, back in 1973. The award presentation ceremony, which this year is being held on Saturday, 17 March 2012, is always one of the highlights at SCHMUCK. Lorenzen, who was born in 1942 in Hagen, Westphalia, taught at the « Staatliche Zeichenakadamie » in Hanau from 1974 to 1985, while also acting as a visiting lecturer at the « Hochschule für Gestaltung » in Pforzheim, at which college he then, in 1985, took up an appointment as a professor. He continued to teach there in the jewellery design department until retiring in 2008.

“Schmuck-Show 2012” is a jewellery presentation with professional models, set in an exceptional light and sound design. With the cooperation of several artists who exhibit their works at different places in Munich during these ‘Jewellery Days’, on the evening before the start of the trade fair jewellery is being presented directly on the body. The jewellery stirs emotions and prompts diverse conversations. At the bar, artists, jewellery lovers and laymen meet; there is room for an animated exchange. The project has been initiated by Olga Zobel Biro

The palette relates directly to street signage but I do feel free to incorporate other colours and don’t feel inhibited by it.
What ignited your interest in signs? Was it marked by a particular experience or moment?
Some of the urban landscape in Australia seems particularly contrived, like a theatre set. A mixture of international influences all mixed up, often without connecting to the environment. My attention is drawn to signs as ‘street furniture’ if you like, ‘props’. «

Linda Hughes – Necklace

« In her new body of work, contemporary jeweller Linda Hughes explores the ‘stripe’, historically favoured as a metonym for danger, exclusion and as a device to attract attention. Hazard signage, ubiquitous in the urban landscape, changes when placed on the body as jewellery. In this exhibition, Hughes applies the visual language of the stripe to the sculptural form of the wearable. Displayed against as a series of graphic backdrops, the work explores the tension between body and environment, critiquing the complex theatre of public space. »

Linda Hughesnecklace  – « It’s got legs » exhibition

« Shared Zone, is both the culmination of Linda Hughes master’s research and her first solo exhibition.
Hughes utilises the familiar urban language of invisible everyday objects such as road signs, posts and hazard markings. Juxtaposing these symbols on the body she uses them to define space and create landscape. Her work invites the wearer to become a part of the “theater of the wearable” that arises when the brooches, neckpieces and bangles are placed so as to interact and create their roles – transforming the body into a stage. »

Benita Dekel, Massconstruction – silver & concrete (ciment)

« Benita Dekel, a graduate of the Department of Jewelry Design at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design (Israël), developed a series of jewelry pieces that combine silver with concrete. The results of the combination of concrete, which we usually associate with heavy, industrial construction, and delicate constructions in silver is that despite being made of concrete the pieces do not appear heavy. The shapes of the pieces, which are very familiar, almost as though they have been taken from various construction sites, manage to surprise both in their shape and new function«

THE RING – the most common piece of jewellery can be full of meaning, a personal statement sometimes showing itself as a technical miracle or purely decorative and beautiful. It can demand attention, be an invitation to play, be filled with tears and secrets – and is to be worn for one day or for ever.
In homage to the ring Galleri Hnoss has invited all the jewellery artists exhibited in the gallery since the start in 1997 to produce one ring each. The result is now to be seen in the exhibition THE RING – jewel forever. The show consisting of over one hundred rings is a vibrant collection of different expressions, thoughts and forms

http://h-stew.com/wp-content/uploads/ring1.jpg

In connection with the exhibition on September 9 we are also arranging aseminar : The Ring – jewel forever. The theme is the ring seen from different perspectives. We are very proud to announce the speakers: Anna Schetelich from Galerie Oona, Germany, Professor Otto Kunzli, Germany, and Manuel Vilhena, jewellery artist from Portugal. Moderator is Love Jönsson, crafts critic and guest lecturer at HDK, University of Gothenburg. The seminar is a collaboration between Galleri Hnoss and the Department of Jewellery Art at HDK, with support from Gothenburg Crafts Association, Estrid Ericsson’s Foundation, Wilhelm and Martina Lundgren Fund, and the family Wikanders Foundation.

« My most recent series consists of psychological portraits that address ideas of consumption and personal obsession using irony, humor and vibrant color. Using a combination of traditional metalsmithing processes, such as raising and die-forming as well as industrial processes such as laser-jet cutting, this work aims to merge contemporary enameled imagery with traditional forms.« ( Jessica Calderwood)

« The images used in this series of jewelry pieces are appropriated from a pulp magazine printed during the 1950’s titled Secrets. The magazine photos were overly dramatic and stagy, both tragic and unintentionally comic, but somehow they captured the zeitgeist regarding female transgression. These reconfigured images freeze a moment in the daily drama of our lives and, set as jewels, they serve as paeans to the mundane.
By first manipulating, then converting these images to enamel decals (and firing them onto the surface) I can exploit the historical conventions of enameled portrait miniatures, and, in particular, 18th century decal transfers. Hand-painted enamel portrait miniatures were luxury items but with the development of the decal transfer process, in the mid-18th century, such jewels were affordable to a wider audience. Then as now the enameled image serves to provide a democratized view of time and place. » (Kathleen Browne)
