ASTONISH is a collective of seven female contemporary jewellery makers sharing a common passion: (gem) stones. For the third consecutive year, they will exhibit their work at Internationale Handwerks Messe(IHM) in Munich, March 2018.

In an age of globalization when artists travel to numerous places, how relevant is their nationality in an artistic context?
What do we mean when we talk about Portuguese, Mexican and Brazilian contemporary art in the 21st century’?
What do we mean when we say that jewelry can identify a people and a culture?
What do we mean when we talk about Portuguese, Mexican and Brazilian contemporary art in the 21st century’?
Why do we mean when we say that a people and a culture can be identified by their jewelry?
Could it nowadays only identify an epoch?
// question the cultural identity and heritage of participating artists
// display works without showing the artists’ names and nationalities
// look at the way jewelry manufacturing undergoes changes and is affected by other materials and techniques
// reflect on concepts of identity and the way our past surfaces in the present
// foster a debate on the response of the public and reveal the artists’ names and nationalities when the event closes
Draw up the themes that PIN elected to embody the Twenty-Three. Contemporary Jewelry in the Ibero-America exhibition to promote a reflection on contemporary manufacturing that will make us re-think the cultural heritage of each artist and the relations this establishes.
Each of the 23 areas that make up the exhibition plan where the pieces are displayed represents a member nation of UCCI – Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities.
The artists’ names and nationalities are not displayed in order that their cultural identity and heritage can be probed and questioned.
The public is invited to seek the origin of each group of artists and interact in loco by trying to discover their nationality – and leave a flag sticker at each area.

  »During this time I’ve been in Idar-Oberstein doing my MFA I have been researching different aspects of the concept of « play » in society and how it influences in building the personality of human beings.
I have sailed the deep seas of Freudian concepts, repeating inward the sound « Fort- daaa », understanding this as a magic spell capable of transforming that reality that distresses us into something pleasant. Play has the power to transform confusion and trauma into a situation of enjoyment and connection with ourselves. Play is a ritual that takes place in a sacred place, the magic circle, the backyard of our house, the playground. That magical corner is deeply connected to our unconscious and through its exploration we can get to know more ourselves and we can also find this source of inspiration for our daily lives. Play is an intermezzo in our routine, is an ornament that adds beauty and grace to our lives. Playing is a need, a function of living beings. . Into an imperfect world and into the confusion of life it brings us a temporary, limited perfection. »  (oct. 2016)

« Me gusta metaforizar mis experiencias, me gusta romantizar lo cotidiano, me gusta enaltecer los pequeños detalles.
 La palabra “petium” proviene del latín pecium o petium, que significa “trozo de algo roto o fragmento encontrado después de un naufragio”.
 Esta definición le abre paso a un paralelismo entre dos imágenes/escenarios:
 Una es en la orilla del mar frente a los restos de un naufragio expulsados por las aguas. La marea actuando como un motor de transformación, de limpieza, extrayendo de lo profundo aquello que estuvo perdido, olvidado.
 Y por otro lado mi realidad: la vorágine citadina, el consumo desmedido de los humanos que todo lo desechamos se convierte en un torbellino que va escupiendo los residuos de la sociedad. ¿Mi misión? Colectar esa escoria a manera de tesoros, como si fueran caracolas en la orilla; transformarlos, darles una segunda oportunidad, una nueva vida, reutilizar lo que la gente desecha para aportarle algo mío.
 El ambiente circundante me influye, los focos donde pongo  mi atención son diferentes en cada escenario, pero hay un denominador común: los detalles. ¿Por qué poner atención en ellos? Es la observación minuciosa la que nos permite detectarlos. Es esa sensibilidad la que nos permite capturar su esencia y entonces quizá… son los pequeños detalles los que le dan a la vida sostén, sabor, ¿ilusión…?
La mixtura es lo que me completa, quiero encontrar en los opuestos las conexiones y hacerlos dialogar, bailar, distanciar, acercar, jugar…
Mis piezas son como una pócima que combina muchos elementos provenientes de diversos puertos y rincones. Son collages, ensambles. Pero la morfología, la composición, los elementos no son independientes, hay una interacción, están interconectados entre sí a través de su forma, colores, manchas, texturas, líneas, distancias…Se crea un conglomerado donde esta multiplicidad tiene una relación y es la asociación de los elementos que definen un conjunto, a través de los cuales intento reflejar mi  propio mundo.
Castillos de chupetines, pedestales a la hora de la merienda. Columnas verdes, columnas blancas. Ruinas imaginarias. Curvas moderadas. Aristas afiladas. Soles amarillos y soles rosas.
 En mis piezas todo aquello que parece disparatado es posible… Mi manera de componer está asentada en bases lúdicas, instintivas. Voy oliendo los colores y los elementos de un paisaje hogareño… Busco, en definitiva, sentirme como en casa… »

« I take great pleasure in transforming my experiences into metaphors, adding a romantic view to those slight details that take place in our daily life.
The word “petium” comes from Latin meaning “a piece of something broken or a fragment found after a shipwreck « .
This definition gives way to a parallelism between two images / scenes:
By one side, on the shore of the sea the rests of a shipwreck are revealed by the water. The tide acting as a transformation engine, cleaning, drawing from the deep what had been lost, forgotten.
On the other hand my reality: the vortex of the city, the excessive consumerism of humankind, a tornado of discard that spits out the remains of society.  Which is my mission? To collect these drags as treasures, like shells on the shore. And then transform them, give them a second chance, a new life, reuse what someone considered worthless and leave in it a trace of myself.
The atmosphere of the surrounding affects me, the focus of my attention differs in every setting, but there is a common denominator: The details. Why to put attention to them?  It is the meticulous observation that lets us detect them. It is these sensibilities that allows us to capture their essence and then maybe…are the little details that give us support, taste ….hope …?
The mixture is what fills me.  I want to find the connections in the opposites and make them engage in a dialogue. Make them dance, grow apart, get close, play. My pieces are like a concoction that combines various elements, coming from diverse harbors and corners. They are collages, assemblages. But in the composition the elements are not independent. There is an interaction, they are interconnected through their shape, colour, stains, textures, lines, distances…A conglomeration is created where this multiplicity has a relation and it is the conjunction of the elements that defines a whole, through which I intend to reflect my own world.
Lollypops castles, lemon balustrades. Green columns , white columns. An imaginary ruin. Moderate curves. Sharp edges. Yellow suns and pink suns.
In my pieces everything that seems nonsense it is possible. My way of composing is seated in playful, instinctual bases. I go around smelling the colours and the elements of a homely landscape … Seeking for the “welcome home” feeling… »  (Eva Burton blog)

Melting Point 2016 VALENCIA (Spain) – EXPO ‘SUR o no SUR’ & ‘ASTONISH’ – Centre del Carme, Valencia (SP) – 21-24 Avril 2016

Sur o no Sur es un proyecto iniciado por Eva Burton en la ciudad de Barcelona.
Nace de la necesidad de mostrar a nivel internacional la contribución de los argentinos a la disciplina de la Joyería Contemporánea.
Gracias al apoyo de la galerista argentina Mercedes Rodrigo, la exposición fue presentada por primera vez en Octubre 2014 en Galería Siesta durante Joya Barcelona.
Esta primera experiencia tuvo una repercusión muy positiva en el público y logró captar la atención en diferentes sitios de Europa. Así, Sur o no Sur ha sido exhibido por segunda vez en Marzo de 2015 en Galería Silvestre, Tarragona (España). En Mayo de 2015 ha formado parte del Silver Festival en Legnica (Polonia) no sólo en el cartel de exposiciones sino también dentro del marco del Simposio “Boundaries” (“Fronteras”) llevado a cabo durante el festival.
Hoy, luego de dos años de haberse iniciado el proyecto, Sur o no Sur hace una nueva estación de itinerancia con en la Tercera Edición del encuentro internacional de Joyería Contemporánea de Valencia: el Melting Point.

“Astonish” es un grupo de jóvenes joyeros alumnos o graduados del Campus Idar Oberstein (Universidad de Ciencias Aplicadas de Trier) en el Departamento de Joyería y Talla de Piedra.
Estudiar en Idar- Oberstein no significa sólamente encontrar un lenguaje propio en forma y materia, sino también lidiar con el término “piedra preciosa”. Ya sea que lo amemos, odiemos o abandonemos, nuestra intención con este proyecto en enseñar al mundo diferentes aproximaciones en relación a las piedras.
Luego de tres exposiciones en Alemania durante las ferias Inhorgenta, Internationale Handwerksmesse (Schmuck) en Munich e Intergem en Freiburg, tenemos nuevamente la oportunidad de compartir nuestro trabajo durante la tercera edición del Simposio de Joyería Contemporánea de Valencia conocido como “Melting Point”.

During SCHMUCK 2016 : EXPO ‘ASTONISH’ – Internationale Handwerkmesse Munich, Hall B1, booth n°751 (DE) – 24 Fevr.-1er Mars 2016

« Astonish » is a group of fresh, young, jewellery artists, which are current students or recent alumni from Trier University of Applied Sciences, Campus Idar-Oberstein, Department of Gemstones and Jewellery. Studying in Idar-Oberstein means not just finding an own language in form and material, but also dealing with the topic « Gemstone ». This year, we got the possibility to show the world our very different approaches towards gemstone on four different fairs. Whether we love, hate, or leave the material, come over and check out our jewellery!

 

Meet us at Inhorgenta Munich in Hall C2 booth number 524 and 526.
Two weeks later we will be present at Internationale Handwerksmesse München, booth number 751 in Hall B1. 24 Feb 2016  -  01 Mar 2016
Then, in March we will show our pieces at Jewellery and Gem Fair Freiburg, Hall 2 booth number 2B35, 47.

« The purpose of my pieces are for viewer or wearer may appreciate values beyond the material. My practical works are made with rice, beans, found objects, paper and silver. One is clearly perceived as more valuable than the other. This will indeed lead contrasting combination to the wearer and everything that is valuable or not, in our perception, becomes valuable in a variety of way. »

« My pieces are out of a new Stone, called « Stephie-Stone ». Stephie-Stone is a new material created by the nature out of our trash. Plastic is not biodegradable by nature, it is simply crushed and seeps into the ground. With time and great pressures the earth could create a completely new stone. Just like the rutile needles in quartz crystal, we will see stones that have plastic inclusions.«

Du 20 octobre au 12 décembre 2015, Sébastien Carré et Florine Menant présentent Transmission, une exposition de bijou contemporain et du travail artistique de la matière, au Studio 411 à Montpellier.

« Nombre de connaissances et de savoir-faire sont parvenus jusqu’à nous par l’intermédiaire de rencontres et d’échanges. Le contact et la communication ont permis de tout temps à l’Homme de se perfectionner et d’étendre nos compétences ainsi que nos connaissances. Nous avons déjà pu constater dans certaines cultures (où les échanges ont été ralentis ou stoppés) des connaissances ancestrales disparaissent et qui demandent désormais à être réinterprétées, réinventées, transmutées.
Cette exposition vise ici à faire prendre conscience que le travail de la matière ne doit jamais être réduit à un artisanat, il est bien plus que cela : il est vecteur de savoir, de culture et de sens. Il faut au contraire, bien plus le considérer comme une forme d’expression artistique contemporaine bien plus apte à faire rentrer l’art dans nos vies de tous les jours.
Célébrons les échanges et abolissons ces codes qui visent à tout faire rentrer dans des cases pour enfin réellement apprécier et vivre l’art de façon totale afin de ne pas laisser l’individualisme vider nos sociétés de ce qui fait leur beauté.

Las ranas y las jirafas vienen a saludar
 Se corren carreras en autos de madera
y luego comemos dulces con crema pastelera
 El patio de  mi casa es muy particular
disfruto de aquellas visitas que lo hacen brillar….
 Me gusta metaforizar mis experiencias, me gusta romantizar lo cotidiano, me gusta enaltecer los pequeños detalles.
El ambiente circundante me influye, los focos donde pongo  mi atención son diferentes en cada escenario, pero hay un denominador común: los detalles. ¿Por qué poner atención en ellos? Es la observación minuciosa la que nos permite detectarlos. Es esa sensibilidad la que nos permite capturar su esencia y entonces quizá… son los pequeños detalles los que le dan a la vida sostén, sabor, ¿ilusión…?
La mixtura es lo que me completa, quiero encontrar en los opuestos las conexiones y hacerlos dialogar, bailar, distanciar, acercar, jugar… Mis piezas son como una pócima que combina muchos elementos provenientes de diversos puertos y rincones. Son collages, ensambles. Pero la morfología, la composición, los elementos no son independientes, hay una interacción, están interconectados entre sí a través de su forma, colores, manchas, texturas, líneas, distancias… Se crea un conglomerado donde esta multiplicidad tiene una relación y es la asociación de los elementos que definen un conjunto, a través de los cuales intento reflejar mi  propio mundo.
En mis piezas todo aquello que parece disparatado es posible… Mi manera de componer está asentada en bases lúdicas, intuitivas. Voy oliendo los colores y los elementos de un paisaje hogareño… Busco, en definitiva, sentirme como en casa…  Eva Burton   Idar Oberstein, Septiempre 2015

I enjoy the visits that make it shine
I take great pleasure in transforming my experiences into metaphors, adding a romantic view to those slight details that take place in our daily life.
The atmosphere of the surrounding affects me, the focus of my attention differs in every setting, but there is a common denominator: The details. Why to put attention to them? It is the meticulous observation that lets us detect them. It is this sensibility that allows us to capture their essence and then maybe…is the little details that give us support, taste … hope?
The mixture is what fills me. I want to find the connections in the opposites and make them engage in a dialogue. Make them dance, grow apart, get close, play. My pieces are like a concoction that combines various elements, coming from diverse harbors and corners. They are collages, assemblages. But in the composition the elements are not independent. There is an interaction, they are interconnected through their shape, color, stains, textures, lines, distances…A conglomeration is created where this multiplicity has a relation and it is the conjunction of the elements that defines a whole, through which I intend to reflect my own world. My way of composing is seated in playful, instinctual bases. I go around smelling the colors and the elements of a homely landscape … Seeking for that “welcome home” feeling…   Eva Burton

« Sur O No Sur«   is a project carried out jointly by Eva Burton and Mercedes Rodrigo and brings together the work of fourteen Argentinian artists:  Ana Weisz — Cecilia Hecker — Eva Burton — Elisa Gulminelli — Gabriela Cohn — Gastón Rois — Iacov Azubel — Jorge Castañón — Lucia Mishquila Brichta — Maria Carelli — Mercedes Castro Corbat — Patricia Rodriguez — Rodrigo Acosta and Sabina Tiemroth, who -according to the artist Guigui Kohon- « show many souths full of landscapes; corners that outline thoughts and places with blurred boundaries, connecting stories and hemispheres from a feeling hard to define…« 
It was presented for the first time in October 2014 during The Jewellery Week in Barcelona, at Siesta Gallery who´s director is Mercedes Rodrigo. It was also presented in Galería Silvestre in Tarragona, Spain.

Waking up after a sleepless night, looking at the pictures of the pieces showed at the  exhibition, reading books randomly and remembering… Everything reappears along with a passage of Marcelo Mathey, the writer. He says that when he finds a beautiful  place he fixes his gaze there to distinguish the small parts of it, or when looking at a house he tries to observe the people who live there. This is an almost accurate brief of the exhibition held at Galería Siesta in Barcelona that brings us Argentine Jewelry closer in the framework of the Barcelona Jewelry Week.
Those artists showing their “souths” full of landscapes, spots outlining thoughts, inhabited places whose boundariesfade away while connecting stories and hemispheres of a feeling that can´t be catalogued.
