Mystica tells us, that departed souls sometimes return as butterflies to comfort and reasure us.
But whatever the case, one thing is sure in this life they live short.
They are light and extremely agile and in the eyes of some are considered as very beautiful
The only animal who looks alive while not being it.
That is their tragedy. To be pinned on a board. 
The butterfly for the artist is also a metaphor for life.
How big or small, how light or heavy do you make it?
It was my personal curiosity to ask artists whose work fascinate / intrigue me to show me their Butterfly.

I always liked to mix different quotations in my pieces.

To do a butterfly seemed to be very easy, but suddenly this insect really gave me problems. It became so serious but at the same time too sweet. I had to leave nature immediately and go back to the topics I am familiar with.

As a child I was already wondering how « things » got their name. Sometimes a word or a name is a combination of 2 or more words. also in the case of the Butterfly. Why?? I combined a pack of butter with a fly. Quess what? It doesnt look like a butterfly. For me its a strang name for a beautiful animal.

et plonger la tête la première dans la HEAD …..

la HEAD ? la Haute Ecole d’Art & de design de Genève (Suisse), et plus particulièrement l’orientation design-bijou

EXPOSITION « PASSE-PASSE »  - la date de fin de cette exposition est largement dépassée (Exposition du 2 au 12 juillet 2008) mais je ne résiste pas à la tentation de la faire découvrir aux « retardataires » comme moi ! :-(
Le thème est passionnant, le(s) résultat(s) SUPERBE(s), et, surtout, ce qui me fascine, cette propension qu’ont les écoles étrangères (hors France s’entend) à COMMUNIQUER, INFORMER sur leurs élèves ………..
 UNE SÉLECTION DE TRAVAUX D’ÉTUDIANT(E)S DE L’ORIENTATION DESIGN BIJOU
Parallèlement à l’exposition «de main à main» au Mudac, l’orientation Design Bijou de la HEAD–Genève présente à Viceversa-L’Annexe une sélection de travaux d’étudiant(e)s réalisés lors des interventions des créateurs de bijou Sonia Morel et Dorothee Striffler ainsi que du designer Timo Kuechler.

Le collier et le mouvement ont été les thèmes proposés par Sonia Morel, créatrice de bijou Lausannoise, aux étudiant-e-s de première année durant son intervention au printemps 2008 à la HEAD – Genève. Le résultat, décliné en 11 parures, foisonne d’idées et démontre une richesse d’interprétation aussi bien d’un point de vue formel que conceptuel. L’ondulation d’une fine feuille de métal côtoie les traces d’un objet sur le corps ou la magie d’un bijou qu’on transforme d’un geste.

Cette exposition est également l’occasion de montrer des travaux résultant de l’intervention de Dorothee Striffler, bijoutière allemande formée à Pforzheim, qui a partagé son expérience d’un travail précieux et rigoureux autour de la chaîne. Éléments répétitifs par essence, qui nécessitent une parfaite maîtrise de l’assemblage et des proportions.

Timo Kuechler, responsable du design chez Niessing a initié des créations surprenantes en imposant le bois et la bague comme sujets de recherche. Les bijoux expérimentaux qui en découlent illustrent avec beaucoup d’humour la capacité des étudiant(e)s à innover.

B-side DownTownArtJewellery Festival is an energetic, self-created festival for jewellery artists. The 2nd edition takes place from the 3rd until the 6th of November 2011 and brings together a series of jewellery exhibitions and performances in the city of Amsterdam. This event is initiated by min-association; Maaike Ebbinge – Iris Tsante – Noémie Doge,

who graduated from Amsterdam’s Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2007 and 2008.
B-side gives artists the opportunity to explore new ways of showing their jewellery to the world. Each artist is encouraged to take responsibility for his of her own part in a bigger chain or route.
B-side emphasises the festive side of a festival and celebrate the art of jewellery. The aim of the festival is to show different ways of presenting and thinking about art jewellery through exhibitions and performances. It allows exploration of spaces that aren’t usually used for exhibition purposes, for example parks, ateliers, bicycles, empty buildings, a living room, a café or the back of a car.
B-side happens simultaneously with other inspiring jewellery events in Amsterdam.
B-side shows designs that go very much beyond mass-produced jewellery. It shows an artistic way of presenting and dealing with jewellery. The value of this jewellery is not defined by precious metals, but by their visual force and strong concept.
There are many jewellery artists working in Amsterdam. Three of the four most renowned Dutch jewellery galleries are based here, and the jewellery department of the Rietveld Academy is well-k

nown for its active students and teachers. We are very happy to be able to celebrate Amsterdam’s special connection to jewellery with this special platform for art jewellery.

“xxx Jewels”
The first thing you see when you arrive in Amsterdam Schiphol is a huge poster with a woman showing her bare breast.
‘Sex Sells’ is an overused concept.
Students of the Jewelry Department Het Sieraad of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie use this principle to show their work. They made collages combining pornography with their jewelry pieces. The explicit character of the pornography is transformed into a new image; a dialogue between body and jewel.
“xxx Jewels”, is a jewelry presentation in form of posters and a magazine.
The posters will be spread around the city during the time of the festival. The magazine is for sale and will be shown at the different locations of the B-side Festival; it also will be presented at the opening of the jewelry fair Sieraad, the 4th. of November between 2am and 9pm.

« Les premières pièces que j’ai faites en riz sont les deux grenades. Elles faisaient partie de mon projet de diplome* qui était de donner plus de surprise dans une demande en mariage. Je voulais travailler plus sur les packagings que sur le contenu (l’alliance) pour que les packaging soient en eux même des bijoux.
Mes projets sont comme des bijoux dans des bijoux. La bague de fiançailles en allumettes contient une alliance, et le jour de la déclaration d’amour enflammée, le couple décide de bruler la bague pour obtenir l’alliance.La bague en crochet est elle aussi un bijou et l’homme peut décider le jour de sa demande de décrocheter le packaging pour que la femme découvre vraiment le bijou de demande en mariage.
Et en ce qui concerne le riz, il y en a une pour l’homme et une pour la femme. Dans la tradition, à la sortie de l’église, les invités jetent du riz sur les mariés pour les « déclarer » mariés à leur manière. Je voulais que ce soient les mariés qui décident du moment où ils veulent vraiment dire oui. Car au moment où l’homme et la femme veulent l’alliance, ils sont obligés de dégoupiller cette grenade. Dès lors, la grenade se décompose et le riz éclate comme une bombe, et l’alliance est libre d’aller se mettre sur le doigt.
Suite à ces deux grenades, j’ai décliné des bijoux liés au mariage (des broches noeuds papillon, un collier noeud papillon pour la femme, et des boucles d’oreille diamants) mais ces bijoux se portent simplement sans surprise derrière.

(The 1st pieces I made in rice are the two grenades. They were part of my diploma project* which was to give more surprise in a marriage’s demand. I wanted to work more on the packaging than on content (the alliance), so that the packaging becomes itself a jewel.
My projects are like jewels inside jewels. The engagement ring made of matches contains a « real » engagement ring, and the day of the declaration of « burning » love, the couple decided to burn the ring to get the alliance ….
With regard to rice, there is one (grenade) for men and one for women. In the tradition, when getting out of the church, guests throw rice on  the married  to « declare » married in their way. I wanted that the married  are who decide when they really say yes to each other. When man and woman really decide to get the alliance, they are obliged to unpin this grenade. Then the grenade « explodes » and rice explodes as a bomb, the alliance is liberated & ready to be put on finger. Following these two grenades, I declined jewelry related to marriage (the pins bow ties, bow tie necklace for the woman, and earrings diamonds), but these jewels are worn simply, without any surprise inside.
All the grains of rice are drilled one by one … then woven. For a grenade, there are approximately 8,000 grains of rice

In its archaic and raw state it triggers aversion in many, but is welcome when served as a fragrant roast. It is peddled in discount shops and bargain counters, or traded for 200 euros per kilo.  Delving into these contrasting worlds, Stephanie Hensle explores the luxury of meat in context of adornment, indulging our lust for both on many levels. Inspired by the art of butchery, she packs resins, jewels and other traditional jewellery pieces into sausages and pâté. Throughout she redefines not only a typology for jewellery but also our relationships to creating and acquiring it. The act of slicing („100 grams of brooch, please“) defines the pedant or brooch pieces while addressing the system of value associated with jewellery. Typical sausage netting, meat hooks or skewers become fasteners attaching the pieces to the wearer. Left over pieces are wrapped like cold cuts for the purchaser‘s consumption.  A third group of pieces reflects on the human body as meat. Neck and body pieces hang like detached organs or mysterious growths. Cut open, they allow a glimpse into the skin-colored insides. Le collier de la reine/ The queen necklaceManolya Konuk – ‘Le collier de la Reine’ – Here, perhaps more than in the other pieces, the material has taken up all importance. The queen necklace was the necklace of Marie Antoinette and hence can be seen as a prelude to the French Revolution. Symbol of excess and decadence, this jewel, never worn, caused the demise of the French Monarchy. Playing with words again, this chocolate abundance can provoke a ‘’crise de foi(e)’ which can be translated both as ‘‘sick by food’ as ‘‘loss of faith’.

While examining the psychological and sociological potency of chocolate in the pieces entitled Love Tokens, I became aware of the sensual power of our lips. This culminated in Chocolate, a collaborative interactive installation comprised of a series of impressions made in the gold foil wrappers of Ferrero Rocher chocolates. The impressions are of puckered lips or teeth. In its use of repetition, mass quantities of « faux » gold foil, reference to chocolate and to the mouth, the installation speaks of consumption, indulgence, passion, and consumerism. » (Anika Smulovitz)

« The fruit has been sealed, with either lacquer or wax. I wanted to see if these would hold up better/longer than the raw ones. However, I’m not a fan because it changes the meaning of the pieces somewhat – being sealed, they stop being about the moment and instead go into the preservation. And wax = bad because it just flakes off. I’m still on the hunt for different ways to treat the surface!«

« For her current exhibition, de Jong has created a series of potato bijoux, « Pommes de Jong. » They consist of potatoes laid out to dry until they are totally shrivelled, and then dipped, roots and all, in a bath of molten gold, with surprising results – jewel-like objects in weird and wonderful forms.
Her interest in integrating the humble potato, which she cultivates in her garden in France, into her art, began in 2001 with her series of paintings inspired by Malevich, as the hair of The Farmer’s Wife (« Potato Hair »). This was followed in 2002 by a painted dialogue (« Harvest ») with the pioneering Russian artist.This theme continued with « Aardappeltaal’ (Potato Language), a collaboration with Jennifer Tee at the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven in 2003. In 2006, participated in the Biennale di Ceramica dell’arte (curated by Roberto Orth), in Albissola, Italy, with an installation of ceramic objects of « baked potatoes » for the home and garden of the Danish artist Asger Jorn (1914-1973).

 project ‘Aesthetic Nutrition’, Ana Cardim

« How does nutrition, on a socio-economic level and in its’ most basic form, relate to the aesthetic values of today’s society? This question can only come from Ana Cardim, who has a passion to make interactive, sociable jewelry-art. This takes shape in her recent project “Aesthetic Nutrition”.
The project consists of a video, projected on a wall, three heaps of rice, chopsticks and three bowls containing one, two and three hand-made rice grains. Each grain is made from pure gold, weighs half a gram, and has the economic value of about 15 kilos of eatable dry rice. (How many grains would that be?) In total, the project exists of three grams of gold, enough for a beautiful gold ring, and 90 kilo’s of rice, which can provide a meal for 1800 people! In the video you’ll see a girl trying to eat it all… Everyone that visited ‘Aesthetic Nutrition’ was given a cup filled with delicious rice-pudding.
With her project ‘Aesthetic Nutrition’, Ana Cardim seeks attention for the idea of the difference in quantity, and levels of value, between the esthetic value of gold and the value given to the basic human need for food.
I am glad this project touches the subject of discrepancy in value and quantity from an aesthetic point of view. The rice-colored, ceramic bowls that contain the golden grains, are shaped like up-side-down rice heaps and make a good visual contrast with the actual heaps of rice. The chopsticks both separate and connect the two, underlining the visual link. The video shown on the wall, completes the display. The action of handing out cups of rice-pudding causes the viewer to connect to the exhibit. How can you resist thinking about the subject, when looking at the serene beauty of the whole set-up, whilst eating yummie pudding!
The launch of the ‘Aesthetic Nutrition’ project happened on the 6th of July, and was commissioned by Bypass, an art magazine that invites artists to write about their work. The second magazine is due to be released in October 2010 and will contain an extensive article by Ana Cardim.
‘Aesthetic Nutrition’ was held in Appleton Square, which is a multivalent space geared towards diverse artistic manifestations and towards the sharing of multidisciplinary experiences. It was the first time that they had work on display by a jewelry designer! » (Broes van Iterson)
