« `Baroque-water-pearls´ got their name, next to other aspects, because of their irregular outer shape. And just because of this special shape, they are sometimes also categorist as `scrap water pearls´. They are not first choice, their shapes don’t fit into special norms and conceptions, they are not perfect round with a smooth straight surface and their luster is broken due to their vivid appearances.
The image, which came up into my mind was to hide every visible detail because they do not fulfill certain expectations. I thought to put them into textile in a way that you only can feel them. It is then your fantasy, which gives the pearls their beauty without seeing them ever.
But nevertheless pearls are always beautiful just because of their unique shapes, their special colors, their sizes and their luster. And every pearl is individual because of this. It is a creation of nature and this beauty is worth to be shown, unless different expectations.
To emphasize this idea, I decided to not hide them.
It seemed to be much more interesting to place them into transparent textile, instead of hides them totally inside an opaque material. Now it is possible to see a bit of their shapes, to feel the weight, to hear the sound when the pearls touch each other and to move them like you want.
The design, which was the result of this idea, is a square tube.
It should be as minimal as possible to give all attention to the pearls inside. The textile I used for this tube/bag is black organza silk. Depending on where the pearls are, the form of the bag will be different and is made by the movement of the pearls. » Karin Seufert

EXPO ‘Badges & Buttons Waistcoats & Vest’ – Velvet da Vinci Gallery, San Francisco (USA) – 11 Juill.-26 Aout 2012

Badges & Buttons Waistcoats & Vest

Most of us have at one time or another worn a badge or button. It might have been a Peace Symbol, a Girl Scout pin or badge from your favorite sports team. These are pins with a purpose. They express your political views, belonging to a particular group or just saying « this is who I am ». Badges can indicate some feat of service, a special accomplishment or a symbol of authority, such as a policeman’s badge. Badges & Buttons Waistcoats & Vests is an exhibition exploring the notion of this modest form of jewelry. Curators Elizabeth Turrell (UK) & Robert Ebendorf (USA) have asked 26 artists, mostly from the United Kingdom and the US, to come up with their own kind of button with a message. The artist badges are displayed on vests or waistcoats – vintage, altered or custom-made clothing puts the jewelry on an imagined wearer.

Klassiker der Schmuck 2012
Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen, Deutschland

This year there will be a retrospective exhibition of the work of a « Modern Classic » designer. In 2012 the chosen designer is the German goldsmith Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen. Together with Francesco Pavan, Lorenzen was the first goldsmith to be awarded the Herbert Hofmann Prize, back in 1973. The award presentation ceremony, which this year is being held on Saturday, 17 March 2012, is always one of the highlights at SCHMUCK. Lorenzen, who was born in 1942 in Hagen, Westphalia, taught at the « Staatliche Zeichenakadamie » in Hanau from 1974 to 1985, while also acting as a visiting lecturer at the « Hochschule für Gestaltung » in Pforzheim, at which college he then, in 1985, took up an appointment as a professor. He continued to teach there in the jewellery design department until retiring in 2008.

“Schmuck-Show 2012” is a jewellery presentation with professional models, set in an exceptional light and sound design. With the cooperation of several artists who exhibit their works at different places in Munich during these ‘Jewellery Days’, on the evening before the start of the trade fair jewellery is being presented directly on the body. The jewellery stirs emotions and prompts diverse conversations. At the bar, artists, jewellery lovers and laymen meet; there is room for an animated exchange. EXPO ‘FELIX LINDNER New jewellery’ – Galerie Rob Koudijs, Amsterdam (NL) – 16 Avril-21 Mai 2011

« The strip cartoonists of the mid-twentieth century were masters in the art of abstract presentation of actions and emotions. Their style of drawing is a source of inspiration for Felix Lindner. Which does not imply that his jewellery simply recounts familiar stories. In Lindner’s work shapes and colours are always clearly defined – as in the picture language of comic strips – but the meaning is rarely unequivocal. He creates suggestive images that are intriguing, not easily surrendering their secrets. His jewellery offers the viewer the freedom to make personal associations.

Felix Lindner’s style of working is characterized by the scrupulous treatment of materials and how to interconnect them. He will often take an existing object, sought or found, as starting point for a new work. His technical ingenuity, however, is always directed towards the desired result, and the unique backing of each brooch is only known to the person wearing it. It is a secret asset, like the personal significance a piece of jewellery has for its owner. »
