Les confluences. Ramon Casas y la joyería contemporánea

« En el marco de la 8ª edición de JOYA Barcelona Art Jewellery Fair, la comisaria y experta en historia del arte Nichka Marobin, comisaria de la muestra, nos presenta el proyecto de “Les Confluences | Las Confluencias”. Nuestro particular homenaje a Ramon Casas continúa: un paso más allá que abasta un territorio híbrido, un diálogo entre la pintura modernista y la joyería artística.

La exposición tendrá lugar del 22 de septiembre al 16 de octubre, donde podremos apreciar un diálogo artístico, confluencia de ideas, patrones, colores y texturas entre las pinturas del artista catalán Ramon Casas y piezas de joyería artística de nivel mundial. El proyecto es el testimonio de la repetición de motivos ornamentales, adornos decorativos y texturas similares mediante la yuxtaposición de piezas de joyería contemporánea y pinturas extraídas directamente del período modernista.
En la muestra se podrá disfrutar de un Ramon Casas, en su Año oficial, enfrentado a diez artistas de diferentes nacionalidades, con su particular visión del universo de la joya contemporánea. Una sinfonía artística de colores, texturas y emociones, que danzan alrededor de las obras de Casas. Las sensaciones que transmiten sus óleos y dibujos atrapan a estos artistas, inspiradas en un Casas más actual que nunca.
Mundos aparentemente diferentes como son la pintura y la joyería artística, el Modernismo y el arte contemporáneo: sutiles broches, brazaletes o pendientes de originales contrastes, encuentran en esta exposición su espacio, su conversación, poética y sugerente. Una muestra que acerca fuentes artísticas de raíz diversa –técnica y culturalmente- para compartir la inagotable capacidad creativa de los artistas y del ser humano. »

The Gallery at Reinstein|Ross is proud to present “Read and Worn” an exhibition featuring the work of five international artists who transform the pages of books and newspapers into unique works of wearable art jewelry. These artists are storytellers, who utilize the printed word as their form of expression. Whether using publications in their entirety, or simply using a few sheets of print, these artists give new life to the printed page. In the spirit of “intellectual recycling”, discarded newspapers and old books – literature, history and news – are given a second chance as bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and rings. Paper has long been a popular material for the creation of art, with artists often hand-making their own paper. Using the pages of books, newspapers, encyclopedias, however, is a recent trend, ironically spurred by the popularity of e-readers and online publications, and thus the abandonment of the printed and bound book.

Hungarian artist Flora Vagi loves the smell of old books. Collecting old books, she removes the pages to create brooches inspired by marine life and floral forms. Since childhood, Korean artist Kiwon Wang, has been inspired by paper. Not only is paper used freely in Korean domestic architecture, but growing up, her family always had an extensive library of books. Encouraged to “find out who she is”, while in graduate school at the Rhode Island School of design, it was obvious to Wang that paper, pearls, and metals were going to be her materials. Even now, printed paper is Wang’s material of choice. Wang chooses articles from old newspapers to create necklaces, brooches, and bracelets. Most of her pieces are adorned with pearls, the lustrous gems prized for their beauty in both Western and Eastern cultures. Wang is attracted to spherical forms, not just because this shape represents the earth but also because process of recycling is circular.

Jeremy May  paper ring

London-based artist Jeremy May purchases books from his local thrift store. After reading each one, he chooses a story that inspires him the most and turns it into a wearable sculpture.  May selects the pages that he carefully removes from the book, laminating as many as a hundred sheets together, then applies a high gloss finish before reinserting the jewelry into the excavated space within the book. Through his jewelry May hopes to give books a “new lease on life” and inspire people to fall in love with them all over again.

Shiri Avda, “Rock Paper Scissors” Rings

Israeli native Shiri Avda in her work “The Mechanism of Reading” aspires to provoke the viewer with an experience equivalent to reading and leafing through the pages of an old book. Her objects, meant to be both worn and displayed on the wall, are carved from discarded books and embellished with an old lace pattern. Her second series, “Rock Paper Scissors” is inspired by the “world of texture and color” in the printed word. Avda does not conceal the typeface here, instead choosing to reveal the beauty of the printed pages that she takes from antique books and atlases. A fan-like shape – a flourish of paper -  is often used in her pendants, rings, and brooches.  

Katherine Richmond  Brooch

British artist Katherine Richmond trained as a jeweler and silversmith but her Graduate thesis at the School of Jewellery, Birmingham City University, UK prompted her to explore working with alternative materials, including books. Richmond utilizes pages from multi-volume Victorian journals and books, focusing on illustrations which she believes are rarely ever seen by the public, to create multi-layered and highly detailed brooches, necklaces, and pendants. Unlike the rest of the artists in the exhibition, Richmond’s jewelry is full of strong images by which she creates her own narrative. She “uses books as a symbol of permanence and longevity to create wearable objects with a fragility that questions traditional notions of wear-ability.” Paper, she says, is a lot more durable then people think it is.

Jewellery artists from 22 countries all over the world come together in a memorial exhibition for Manfred Bischoff who passed away a year ago. At some point or other, they have all been taught by Manfred at Alchimia, contemporary jewellery school in Florence, and have each submitted one piece to the exhibition that honours a great teacher.
German born Manfred Bischoff lived in Tuscany in a house that was in itself a piece of exquisite art. Its magical interior made a natural and perfect framework for his work that has been called by many names: sensual, poetic, lyrical, great, intimate, strong, beautiful, satirical and always surprising. He worked in 22K gold, as pure as he could manage and still maintain a rigidity in the metal that allowed him to execute his ideas in delicate and well crafted pieces, often accompanied with subtle pink coral and drawings.
His dedication to the language of jewellery and his visions were most likely one of the reasons that the Alchimia school managed to become known and respected internationally in a relatively short time span.

« As a student at Alchimia, you never really met Manfred until the third year. He was a giant figure who arrived to the narrow street in Florence on Tuesdays. He spent time with the older students, watched the world from behind his sunglasses when he leaned onto the wall at coffee breaks, and then he vanished again.
It was not until you were there yourself – in your final year – that you met the myth and began to appreciate his capacity to engage in your work and to show you how you might develop it. He was a surprisingly selfless teacher, and during critiques in the small classroom he managed to create a space for you and him to engage in a dialogue about your work that was stripped of second agendas and based solely on how he could help you to become a better artist.
It is only later, you come to understand how exceptionally truthful and helpful he tried to be in order to make you grow as a person and as an artist. »

Not Too Precious explores inspirational work by 25 international jewellers using materials for their expressive potential rather than for their intrinsic value. Radical artist jewellers of the late 1960s and 70s vigorously rejected the idea that jewellery should be considered ‘precious’ simply because of the materials of which it was made. Today, the use of a huge variety of materials in jewellery is far more accepted, but economic pressures are putting that freedom of artistic expression at potential risk as people revert to traditionally ‘valuable’ materials for ‘safety’. Not Too Precious challenges preconceptions about ‘non-precious’ materials by encouraging us to consider ‘accrued value’: what talented makers bring to their work through their ideas and skill.
The selected artists, who currently work in the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, create innovative, skilfully-made jewellery that is insightful and culturally resonant. Sometimes poignant, sometimes witty, their work communicates at many levels. It is above all honest and – for want of a better term – not too precious.

L’objet d’art actuel, en tant que trace du temps, reflète l’évolution de notre société avec talent et ingéniosité. Aujourd’hui, plus que jamais, le secteur des art appliqués tient une place de choix sur la scène artistique contemporaine, ce que ne contredira pas la troisième triennale du Prix européen des Arts appliqués qui propose les créations de pas moins de 78 créateurs venant de 18 pays d’Europe. Tous, sans exception, apportent une matière, une forme, une couleur, une âme à leur œuvre. Qu’il s’agisse d’arts appliqués à vocation utilitaire ou d’expression libre, les créations ici exposées détruisent les barrières entre les catégories et démontrent tout le talent, la créativité, l’innovation et l’ingéniosité nécessaire à leur élaboration. C’est dans le cadre de «Mons, Capitale européenne de la Cultureen 2015» que cette troisième édition du Prix européen des Arts appliqués vient apporter sa touche contemporaine aux différents domaines de création,qu’ils soient céramique, verre, bijou, mobilier, textile, objets de décorationou encore stylisme…

 

Trois prix sont décernés par un jury d’experts :  le Prix des Maîtres d’art (prix de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles),le Prix Jeune Talent (prix du WCC-Europe) et le Prix Mons 2015.

Alchimia: an Anthology

An exhibition that features the work of Alchemists, teachers and students, former and current, to render visible how skill and creativity pass from one generation to the next, from master to apprentice, giving shape to concept and material

Alchimia: an Anthology features work of current and former faculty of the world-renowned jewelry program at the Alchimia School in Florence, Italy, complemented by a juried selection of pieces by alumni and final semester students. The exhibition highlights technical skill and creativity, and shows a breadth materials and processes realized to form masterful pieces. The exhibition gives visitors an opportunity to support student work and see the way faculty inspires new generations of makers.

The exhibition coincides with the annual Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) conference, which will be held in Boston during May 20-23, 2015.

Artists:  Millie Behrens – Nel Linssen – Naomi Mcintosh — Janna Syvänoja  — Terhi Tolvanen — Flóra Vági

Tales from the North brings together six contemporary jewellers from Scotland, Norway, Finland, Hungary and Holland. Each of the selected artists uses unconventional materials such as paper, acrylic and pebbles, in an innovative way to create beautiful wearable jewellery. The Scottish Gallery has a longstanding relationship with Nel Linssen, Janna Syvänoja and Naomi McIntosh and is delighted to welcome new artists Terhi Tolvanen, Millie Behrens and Flóra Vági into the fold.

The artists are all highly esteemed within the field of contemporary jewellery and between them their work is held in over 50 Public Collections worldwide.
