La nueva joyería en España

La galería Velvet da Vinci reúne en la exposición ¡Genial! a 18 artistas de diferentes generaciones representativos de la joyería contemporánea española en la actualidad; aunque de orígenes diversos todos ellos tienen en común su relación con Barcelona.
Repasando la geografía española observamos que se impone la tradición más conservadora y, en gran medida, prevalece la idea de que el valor de la joya recae principalmente en el valor del material con el que está hecha. Las nuevas joyas ya no son necesariamente de metales y piedras preciosas, sino que los artistas joyeros utilizan toda clase de técnicas y materiales como madera, plástico, esmaltes, porcelana, resinas, hueso, tejidos, viejos objetos, fotografías, etcétera para atraer la atención del espectador, otra característica que las distingue es el tamaño, lejos de estar sujetas a una regla, las medidas de estas joyas pueden causar sorpresa y así encontrarnos por ejemplo con enormes broches que funcionan como una escultura ya que buena parte del valor artístico de las piezas viene dado por el trabajo conceptual que encierra cada una de ellas.
Los nuevos conceptos de joyería se han ido introduciendo poco a poco en nuestro país a través de las escuelas y galerías que se encuentran principalmente en Barcelona y su área de influencia. Esta ciudad mediterránea, cruce de caminos y puerta hacia Europa, de mentalidad abierta al conocimiento de nuevas propuestas, está impregnada de dinamismo creativo y actividad comercial, por cuyo motivo muchos joyeros procedentes, sobretodo, de diferentes lugares de España y de Latinoamérica así como del resto de Europa y del mundo en general coinciden en este punto en algún momento de su trayectoria artística para participar en exposiciones, compartir experiencias, ampliar estudios o, simplemente, buscar inspiración.
La joyería entendida como objeto artístico, como una reflexión original y única, va ocupando un espacio que hasta hace poco en España estaba vacío. Nuevas galerías, ferias especializadas, workshops, exposiciones y conferencias sirven para conectar con el público y atraer a nuevos coleccionistas. A pesar de que nos queda un gran camino por recorrer, sobretodo si comparamos nuestra situación con la de los países del norte de Europa, seguimos avanzando y las nuevas herramientas de comunicación permiten que nos aproximemos cada vez más deprisa al resto del mundo.
Contar historias, reinterpretar símbolos, ensalzar la naturaleza, representar paisajes de la memoria, buscar la sorpresa, indagar en las tradiciones, motivar la reflexión y enlazar elementos geométricos son sólo algunos de los argumentos de los que se sirven estos artistas para la realización de sus joyas. Ramon Puig Cuyàs hace referencia a una arquitectura ligera a través de sus composiciones armónicas construídas con líneas y planos que se interseccionan creándose espacios que invitan a un recorrido desde diferentes puntos de vista. En las piezas de Judy McCaig aparecen elementos figurativos que se repiten y la imagen de los pájaros acaba convirtiéndose en un símbolo que evoca el movimiento y la libertad. En sus joyas Grego García Tebar transporta sentimientos engarzando sus sueños en ellas para que éstos acaben depositados en la memoria. Silvia Walz nos acerca a los tiempos escolares de cuando nos iniciábamos en el estudio de la geometría.
Desde las propuestas más conceptuales a las más formales en el conjunto de los artistas participantes, algunos de los más significados de la joyería contemporánea española, encontramos trabajos realizados con materiales muy diversos como metales, madera, porcelana, resina, esmaltes o tejidos. Teniendo siempre en cuenta el diálogo permanente entre el cuerpo humano y la joya viven sumergidos en sus procesos creativos enriqueciendo el conocimiento, experimentando con materiales y buscando nuevos recursos para, a través de sus diferentes lenguajes, elaborar pequeñas obras de arte como las reunidas en esta exposición las cuales son una clara muestra de lo que se está haciendo actualmente en nuestro país, un trabajo heterogéneo sin marcadas líneas comunes emanando libertad. Contemporary Spanish Jewelry
Velvet da Vinci Gallery has curated an exhibition entitled ¡Genial! presenting 18 artists of different generations who represent contemporary Spanish jewelry. Though the artists’ backgrounds are varied, all have a common link with Barcelona.
When contemplating Spanish jewelry, it is obvious that the most conservative tradition plays a major role along with the idea that the value of a piece of jewelry is found mostly in the value of the material from which it is made. These traditions still hold true to a great extent. The new jewelry, however, isn’t necessarily made from precious metals and stones, but today’s jeweler artists use all kinds of technologies and materials like wood, plastic, enamels, porcelain, resins, bones, fabrics, found objects, photographs, etcetera to attract the attention of the spectator. Another characteristic that distinguishes them is size. Far from being subject to a rule, the sizes of these jewels can provoke surprise. For example, we can see enormous brooches as if they were sculptures since a large part of the artistic value of such pieces is thanks to the conceptual ideas that surround each of them.
Such new concepts of jewelry have been introduced to our country little by little through schools and galleries that are found mostly in Barcelona and its sphere of influence. This Mediterranean city, which is the crossroads between Spain and Europe, has an open mind to knowledge of new ideas. It is impregnated with dynamic creative and commercial activity, and it is that motive that draws many jewelers from other parts of Spain and Latin America, as well as from the rest of Europe and the world in general, to travel there at some time in their artistic trajectories to take part in exhibitions, share experiences, to study or simply to look for inspiration.
To think of jewelry as an artistic object, as an original and unique reflection, is occupying a space that in Spain had been empty even in recent times. New galleries, fairs specific to contemporary jewelry, workshops, exhibitions and conferences have been good for making a connection with the public and attracting new collectors. Even though we still have a long, hard road to follow, especially when comparing our situation to that in other Northern European countries, we forge ahead with new communication tools allowing us to quickly become closer to the rest of the world.
Telling stories, reinterpreting symbols, celebrating nature, representing memories, seeking surprise, investigating traditions, motivating the reflection and joining of geometrical elements are but a few of the arguments these artists pursue for the accomplishment of their jewels. Ramon Puig Cuyàs refers to an airy architecture through his harmonic compositions constructed with lines and planes that are intercut to create spaces that invite us to tour from different points of view. In Judy McCaig’s pieces, there appear figurative elements that repeat themselves to then become completed by the image of birds that becomes a symbol to evoke movement and freedom. In her jewels, Grego García Tebar transports feelings from her dreams by connecting them with her jewels so those feelings become deposited in our memories. Silvia Walz takes us back to our school days when we were beginning a study of geometry.
From the most conceptual to the most formal among the participating artists, all of those represented are among the most significant in Spanish jewelry. We find works realized with very diverse materials including metals, wood, porcelain, resin, enamels or fabric. Always keeping in mind the permanent dialog between the human body and the piece of jewelry, these artists live immersed in their creative processes, enriching the greater knowledge, experimenting with materials, and looking for new resources across different languages to elaborate small pieces of art such as those assembled in this exhibition. They are distinct examples of what is being done nowadays in our country — heterogeneous work without obvious lines of demarcation, based on freedom. (Montserrat Lacomba -Translation by R. Weis)

« Pie de rey, es la herramienta que utiliza el joyero para medir y calibrar con exacta precisión los diámetros y gruesos de las planchas, hilos y tubos que utiliza durante el proceso de construcción de las joyas.
Peu de Reina, es el juego de palabras en catalán, con el que se hacen llamar un grupo de jóvenes joyeras que se conocieron en su paso por la Escuela Massana de Barcelona y que una vez acabados sus estudios decidieron unirse y formar una asociación para difundir de manera conjunta el trabajo de cada una.
Rosa Batalla, Gemma Draper, Teresa Estapé, Guigui Kohon, Francisca Kweitel, Itxaso Mezzacasa, Rita Ruivo, Estela Saez y Blanca Sánchez, componen esta formación que acoge variedad de discursos y planteamientos de trabajo, desde que se formó en septiembre del año 2000 y que piensa seguir creciendo con nuevas incorporaciones.
Entre sus actividades destacan organizar charlas y talleres, preparar exposiciones y muestras de joyería y posibilitar el intercambio con otros países.
Pero Peu de Reina antes que un grupo de joyeras, es un conjunto de personas que desde el referente de la joyería pretenden hacer un comentario crítico e inteligente de la realidad que las envuelve. Sin utilizar grandes tecnologías, recurriendo únicamente a la herramienta más fantástica que la humanidad ha tenido jamás, las manos conducidas por el poder de la imaginación, construyendo unos objetos que nos han de ayudar a encontrar un humanismo que a menudo parece olvidado. » (Ramón Puig Cuyás)

Memories of Mexico
« In April 2010 I was in Mexico City to attend a jewellery symposium called Walking the Gray Area. After a week of wonderfully inspiring talks and exhibitions, it was time to come home. I said my goodbyes and went back to my hotel to pack in readiness for my flight home the next morning. Then, I heard a news flash, which said the skies over Europe were closed due to a volcanic eruption in Iceland. This was too ridiculous to be true. I had to get home as I was travelling to Australia in two days’ time. But, as the hours morphed into days it quickly became clear that I was going nowhere soon…
A blitz-like camaraderie developed as dozens of jewellers gather in disbelief, talking of nothing other than how they were going to get home. We were all stranded under a dark cloud, and there was nothing anyone could do but wait for it to pass.
I sat in my hotel room, reluctantly listening to the screech of the organ grinder who had based himself beneath my window. It sounded cute at first, but after a week it became a nerve grinder. To block out this noise I began to think about my time in Mexico and its rich and colourful culture of chaos. It had been a wonderful experience, and I felt sad that this cloud, which was holding me prisoner, would overshadow the memories of my time there.
Then, it all became clear. Why not make something positive out of this? The idea for a new exhibition was born…

SCHMUCK 2011 – Munich (DE) 16-22 mars 2011 – PROGRAMME

Please find enclosed the program of the Schmuck 2011 during the International Trade Fair in Munich.

This special exhibition is the eldest exhibition of contemporary jewellery work in the world. It takes place since 1959 every year during the International Trade Fair in March. Except the transport cost until Munich the participation in the special show is free of charge for you. Three contributions of Schmuck 2011 will be awarded with the Herbert Hofmann Prize. The prize commemorates Dr. Her-bert Hofmann, the founder of the special show in 1959. In addition the jury of the Bavarian States Prize will look at the works in the special show. The Bavarian States Prize is awarded to 10 contri-bution of applied art within all contribution of the International Trade Fair. This prize is awarded with 5.000 €

The selection of the 62 exhibits to feature in the special show SCHMUCK 2011 was made by Dr Rüdiger Joppien (Head of the Department of Art Nouveau and Modernism at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg), a recognised expert in the applied arts. In total over 650 designers had submitted applications to be granted a space to exhibit within SCHMUCK 2011. Featured in the exhibition are the works of a number of designers of international renown – names like Kimiaki Kageyama (Japan), Ted Noten (Netherlands), Lisa Walker (New Zealand), Ike Jünger (Germany) and Peter Bauhuis (Germany). For the first time this year the exhibition will also include work from China, Mexico and Turkey.

Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

 

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »

 Galleri Hnoss proudly presents Gemma Draper, jewellery artist from Barcelona. We start on friday 3rd at 17:00 with a lecture with Gemma Draper, and the opening of her exhibition

Gemma Draper playfully explores her own fascination for ideas and concepts, creating physical objects with a unique sensitivity to their own world. The philosophical approach towards her own creations adds to her expression, often commenting on the problem of interpreting something out of reality. Or, as she puts it, « When we want to illuminate reality, aren’t we imposing, precisely, a disproportion that burns it? »

Gemma was born in 1971. Among her academic merits she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Autonomous University of Barcelona and a Master of Fine Arts at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, USA, besides being a graduate from famed school Massana in Barcelona. She has previously displayed her work at solo exhibitions in Stockholm, Munich, Amsterdam, Helsinki and Barcelona. She also teaches and holds lectures across the world.

Relaunched at the Saatchi Gallery in May 2009, COLLECT has an enviable reputation as a premier, annual fair for contemporary craft. Walking the Gray Area : A dialog on global mobility, identities and contemporary jewellery

Walking the Gray Area will premiere at Galeria Emilia Cohen in Mexico City, within the frame of the Gray Area Symposium Mexico 2010.

Contemporary jewellery, with its exceptional ability to communicate and create associations directly connected to specific cultural and personal settings and backgrounds seems to be circumscribed to a rather westernized discourse. It has become necessary for contemporary jewellery-makers to rethink the ways they connect with others.

40 artists, from an uncertain total number of  involved countries, take a walk on the gray area and explore,  through the already ambiguous field of contemporary jewellery,  issues related to global mobility, identity and territories in dispersion and the way they perceive and have been affected by this phenomena during their rambling around the world.
Walking the Gray Area is a collective, comissioned exhibition curated by Valeria Siemelink and Andrea Wagner, that bring together 20 Latin American and 20 European jewellery makers and artists who ocationally work with jewellery as a medium, into a dialogue about jewellery, global mobility, contemporary identities and its personal and/or collective implications.

The curators of Walking the Gray Area, selected each 20 artists from their respective continents:  Latin America and Europe. The artists were individually selected based on their artistic excellence, technical abilities and creative response to various subjects. As a collective, the group was conformed based on the on the tensions between their discourses and practices, their varied and experimental approach in the use of materials and techniques and on the rich possibilities that lay on the exchange among them. There is, however, one thing that all the invited artists have in common : like the curators, they are or have all been migrants; born in one place, living, working or studying in another one.

The artists work in couples and were paired randomly: the names of the Latin American artists were written on a piece of paper, which was folded and placed in a bowl. The same was done with the names of the European artists. The curators had fun taking turns to pick a name from one bowl and pairing it with a name from the other bowl. 20 couples were formed and, for the last six months they carried out a dialogue through the pages of a weblog specially created for this purpose. The artists conducted their dialogues in ways they find interesting or relevant: exchanging conversations, stories, images and even materials. Besides their periodical postings in the blog, the artists exchanged letters and parcels through the post, organized Skype sessions, phoned and even meet in person. The weblog has allowed the artists to reach a diverse, distant and growing audience, having attracted over 10 thousand visitors from nearly 90 countries.

Through the exchange both artists and curators aimed to respond to a variety of questions: How do they respond to changing definitions of mobility, locality, globalism, migration?  How do the changing conceptions of identities relate to their being and practice? How do they reconcile their roots with their routes? What kind of exchange can take place between artists from areas of the world where contemporary jewellery is perceived and dealt with in such different ways? How can they relate to and diverse, moving, fast changing audience?

Innovation, colour and energy: jewellery from Escola Massana of Barcelona

The fifth edition of “Precious Thoughts” presents by the works of seven internationally famous artists the Spanish contemporary jewellery developed at the Massana School of Barcelona.
After the important exhibition, “Artistic Jewellery – Padua and its Jewellery School” and last year’s review,“The Jewellery of Nature”, presenting Dorothea Prühl and the German School at Halle, with “La llibertat de la Joia” the same cultural path is continued to present the contemporary art of jewellery to the residents.
This is a cultural event of great importance carried on by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Padova as Italy has not yet developed a proper culture of contemporarity and artistic jewellery is an expressive form still little known and appreciated

“La llibertat de la Joia” is presenting Massana School of Barcelona which thanks to its principles favours the growth of free personalities, fully mature and vivacious artists who work autonomously and completely independently to the extent that it is not possible to speak of a true Catalan style. However, there are many aspects which allow us to see a solid background and an identity in common in the jewellery-makers who attended the School: a marked tendency towards innovation, a conceptual search and the use of metaphor, a great freshness and energy, the tendency towards beauty through the use of colour, the mingling of different materials and objects trouvés, the frequent choice of assembly or construction techniques; the deep convinction that a piece of jewellery is one of the most particular, personal and fantastic ways of sharing one’s thoughts and feelings with the outside world.
