On her second solo exhibition at the gallery, Britton will present 7 brooches and 7 stencils. Works reflecting all the effort, humour, joy and failure of our existence. We all live in hope and want luck.

« What have we got here in this work? Violence, love, riches, sentimentally, humour, wisdom; a friendly companion, a lucky charm, an amulet. Hope. The small and the large refrain. Themes of popular culture, the essence of a pop song in solid form. While the figures themselves draw their shapes from the cheapest trinket, the sentiment that they convey reaches into the deepest abyss. I see in these works all the effort, humour, joy and failure of our existence. They are rough signifiers, visually reduced and emotionally condensed. They are also private icons, some accompanying me from my earliest memories, others invested with my own associations, sifted out of the chaos of possibility through fitting into my hunting pattern. We all live in hope and want luck, more than ever at this point in history. »

The newest collection of rings by Helen Britton, « Devils and Their Friends », are now in exhibition at Sienna Patti. The pieces have roots in her long time fascination with popular culture and its everyday remains and are exclusive to the gallery.

« Devils and Their Friends
If I think about when this work started, then of course I quickly land in the forests of Thüringen and the first of the Devil ring series in 2007. But then that work really stared with visits to that region in 2001. Recently I unearthed a stack of drawings from my late teen and early twenties: wild pigs, black dogs, old cars and headless horsemen. Clearly the things that attracted me to the Forest were not something new.
There was always a dark side, an interest in spooky things, and the obsession with Ghost trains is now common knowledge. But they were also comical, harmless and popular things, things that made their appearances not only at fairgrounds, but also in cartoons on TV or in the jewellery that rolled out of the trinket automat at the supermarket. Popular culture and the everyday remains the baseline in much of my work.
The characters in this series inhabit an imaginary world that has its roots in the Forest [1] work, Unheimlich[2] and these early drawings. Smooth Devil, Stone Devil, Wood Devil, Dough Devil, Fire Devil, Eel, Water Sprite, Millipede, Swine and Old Tree. These characters have broken through to the surface of this deep old river of preoccupation, crept out of their dank and mossy worlds and I have captured their likeness before they slip back under the surface and head on their merry way. » - Helen Britton, 2015.

The SCHMUCK is an international exhibition that has been taking place in Munich for more than 50 years. It combines works of established artists and promising newcomers in the area of contemporary jewellery design and is the meeting place for collectors, jewellery lovers and museum curators from Germany and abroad. Organized as a worldwide contest, the works are chosen by an internationally renowned curator each year, this time by Eva Eisler, professor at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (AAAD). “Presenting works at the SCHMUCK is an honor for any jewellery designer“, says Dieter Dohr, Management Board Chairman of the GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH. That is also why this time, more than 600 gold smiths and jewellery designers from Germany and abroad applied for the special show. In spring 2015, contributions by 63 artists from 21 countries will finally be on display. This time, Karel Novak from the Czech Republic will be honored as the classic of modern art. Highlight of the SCHMUCK will be the awarding of the Herbert-Hofmann-prizes on Saturday, 14 March 2015 at 5 pm on stage in hall B1. On this day, a jury will select the three best works of the SCHMUCK. Each year, a number of accompanying events group around the special show at the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich galleries, museums and cultural institutes.

Helen Britton says about her work: « That I make jewelry, drawings and paper objects and not buildings or gardens, allows me to create a very private world that accepts no compromises. To develop matter in itself, to transform it into an unpredictable way, comes from the love of materials, from the enjoyment of the simple qualities of color, texture, shape and their effect on my senses. I have always had an empathy with objects and in my practice in recent years, this specialized on collecting those awkward and sometimes ugly fragments, those hidden beauties and components that seem to be intended for a life as jewelry. I try to offer them a new opportunity, a chance to sing or to sing one last time. »

Helen Britton, invited as Artist in Residence at the Bengel Foundation in Idar-Oberstein, will be working in the Bengel Factory and at the University of Applied Sciences in Idar-Oberstein in October, November and December 2014.

Researching classic raw stone materials of this region and those transported here from her homeland Australia, along side the possibilities offered by the fashion jewellery making machines of the Bengel factory, Britton is laying down the foundations for a completely new body of work.

« When I’m making my work, although I rarely have a clear idea of the end result, I am in pursuit of a fleeting vision that I chase along until the pieces start to materialize on my worktable. Over so many years of making I have observed that this often results in pairs of pieces. There they are then, in the end, these two friendly companions, singing together, vibrating at the right intensity, complementing each other, yet quite autonomous.
What happened along the way? Was there just too much to say to fit into one work? The vision is often dense and chaotic, so perhaps it is a kind of spreading and organizing within the creative process that produces the two possibilities. And this is jewellery after all, so there needs to be space for the wearer.
It not only like this though. At other times, works are being made or coming back to the studio. I lay them out to revisit them, learn more about them, and during this process I recognize quite clearly relationships between pairs, that may in fact be separated by months or even years. For this exhibition I have made and gathered works that examine this experience. »

The exhibition includes a complete new body of work for the show, alongside a presentation of the industrial series in a custom built showcase. In the second room there is a selection out of her archive dating back to 1991, along with sketchbooks, photos and films.

… Love, wealth and sentimentality, humor, wisdom, violence and hope – these are the paradox emotions and things typical of everyday life that Munich-based but Australian born Helen Britton (born 1966) teases out and explores in her jewelry objects. She combines semi-finished products in the jewelry industry and found objects from flea markets with components and structures she makes herself from metal to create something completely new. “I am building in a way a private world that accepts no compromises,” is how Helen Britton herself describes her work.
From the outset, the graduate in fine art in Britton draws the jewelry objects. Parallel, independent analyses of her artistic output arise, morph into pictograms, gaining the status of mnemonic symbols.

The Beauty Chase – Parcours esthétiques du bijou contemporain. Ce n’est pas Un diamant gros comme le Ritz qui rend fantastique le bijou contemporain, mais la capacité de l’artiste à créer des mondes imaginaires avec les matériaux les plus divers. Le doute et l’innovation, la recherche et l’idée sont au centre du bijou contemporain, il n’y a pas de chemin tracé à suivre. Dans le parcours de la création, le caractère précieux tient donc plus au projet et au travail qu’au matériau “brut” utilisé. Papier, bois, plastique, or ou titane, tissu ou verre : la matière choisie est déjà un mode d’expression esthétique avec l’envie d’être “autre”. C’est justement là l’aspect « fantastique » du bijou contemporain : l’envie de travestissement et de transformation qui le rend surprenant. Le plastique ne semble plus en être, la résine devient bois, l’or se transforme en se mêlant au tissu, au plexiglass, au pigment, le verre révèle sa transparence là où et quand l’artiste le veut. Très développé en Europe du Nord, peu connu par le grand public en France où la tradition de la haute joaillerie éclipse, peut être, tout le reste, le bijou contemporain expérimente, ose, provoque, crée avec des résultats poétiques, irrévérencieux ou ironiques, spectaculaires voire féériques. Et, si on veut emprunter les mots de Tzvetan Todorov, en sa présence: “on accepte le surnaturel”.
