« Multiple Exposures »

exhibition at Museum of Arts and Design (MAD Museum), New York, featuring:
JANTJE FLEISCHHUTMARI ISHIKAWAJIRO KAMATA and SHARI PIERCE.

Upcoming exhibition at Museum of Arts and Design, New York, featuring:
JANTJE FLEISCHHUT, MARI ISHIKAWA, JIRO KAMATA and SHARI PIERCE.
http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/multiple-exposures

Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography is the first museum exhibition to explore how contemporary jewelry artists transform and add new meaning to the pervasive images of this digital age. Drawing inspiration from historic daguerreotypes to manipulated digital images, international jewelry artists explore changing views of beauty and the human body; examine social, political, and cultural issues; probe perceptions of memory and desire; and question the broader relation of jewelry to society and personal identity, issues central to the contemporary experience.

More than 80 renowned artists from over 20 countries are represented —including
Gijs Bakker, Wafaa Bilal, Jordan Doner, Mari Ishikawa, Jiro Kamata, Sooyeon Kim, Iris Nieuwenburg, Kara Ross, Gabriela Sanchez, Bernhard Schobinger, Bettina Speckner,
Joyce Scott, Kiff Slemmons, Andy Warhol and Noa Zilberman.

The connection between photography and jewelry extends back more than 150 years to the invention of the photographic process. The exhibition will provide historical context for this evolving relationship by presenting outstanding nineteenth-century pieces, many of which have never before been exhibited. In recent years, both photography and art jewelry have changed dramatically, and the exhibition will present cutting-edge videos and installations that will provide viewers a broader perspective of contemporary jewelry now.
Organized by MAD’s Curator of Jewelry, Ursula Ilse-Neuman, Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography will be on view from May 13 to September 14, 2014.
Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Ursula Ilse-Neuman, MAD’s Acting Chief Curator Lowery Stokes Sims, Dutch author and jewelry curator Liesbeth den Besten, photography expert Mark Durant, Curator of Decorative Arts at the Toledo Museum of Art Jutta Page, American author and Metalsmith editor Suzanne Ramljak, photography historian and critic Lyle Rexer and German author and critic Ellen Maurer Zillioli.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a full range of educational programming, including lectures and panels for adults, workshops for young visitors and families, in-house demonstrations of jewelry making, curator-led tours of the exhibition, and a variety of film screenings.

EXPO ‘Below Sea Level’ – Galleri Format, Oslo (Norway) – 17 Janv.-17 Mars 2013

Below Sea Level – Jewellery from the Netherlands

(Manon van Kouswijk « Pearl Walk » Amsterdam)

Artists: Ruudt Peters Ted NotenLucy SarneelManon van KouswijkEvert NijlandJantje FleischhutGésine HackenbergIris NieuwenburgNhat-Vu Dang

Today jewellery in the Netherlands is versatile; many different sources of inspiration, approaches and styles co-exist. Yet there is a mentality and an engagement that goes much further than just aesthetics. One can identify certain key notions that touch the chore of this approach: questioning, experimenting, abstraction, consistency, and the tendency to do things well but with a playful touch, to investigate profoundly and to work with a qualifying concept or narrative. The selected artists are all different and unique in their approach, but share the same inquiring mentality. The selection includes an iconoclast, an entertaining conceptualist, a joyous zinc smith, a chain artist, a romanticist, a designer in synthetic materials, a still life pictorialist, a storyteller and a playful abstractionist – together they present Dutch jewellery in all its broadness.

The exhibition will also present the renowned project “Wanna Swap Your Ring” by Atelier Ted Noten. The installation consist of 500 Miss Piggy-rings in shocking pink mounted on the wall of the exhibition space, all placed within the imaginary contours of a handgun. Spectators can obtain a ring made by the master by replacing it with an old one of theirs. What counts is not the value. Noten is equally happy to receive precious rings or cheap ones. What counts is the exchange of old stories and new ones. All the stories together will gradually fill the pistol-shape, changing the symbol of aggression into a charming and multi-faceted scene. A shift in meaning occurs, as is often the case in work by Noten, who has a penchant for combining opposing symbols. For the attentive viewer, the interactive installation holds countless different meanings.

« `Baroque-water-pearls´ got their name, next to other aspects, because of their irregular outer shape. And just because of this special shape, they are sometimes also categorist as `scrap water pearls´. They are not first choice, their shapes don’t fit into special norms and conceptions, they are not perfect round with a smooth straight surface and their luster is broken due to their vivid appearances.
The image, which came up into my mind was to hide every visible detail because they do not fulfill certain expectations. I thought to put them into textile in a way that you only can feel them. It is then your fantasy, which gives the pearls their beauty without seeing them ever.
But nevertheless pearls are always beautiful just because of their unique shapes, their special colors, their sizes and their luster. And every pearl is individual because of this. It is a creation of nature and this beauty is worth to be shown, unless different expectations.
To emphasize this idea, I decided to not hide them.
It seemed to be much more interesting to place them into transparent textile, instead of hides them totally inside an opaque material. Now it is possible to see a bit of their shapes, to feel the weight, to hear the sound when the pearls touch each other and to move them like you want.
The design, which was the result of this idea, is a square tube.
It should be as minimal as possible to give all attention to the pearls inside. The textile I used for this tube/bag is black organza silk. Depending on where the pearls are, the form of the bag will be different and is made by the movement of the pearls. » Karin Seufert

Ten artists, including the most significant in the international arena, are witnesses to a new address at the end of the twentieth century figurative formulas for the liberating effect of the postmodern movement and which has grown in the last decade with extreme views, neo-baroque, neo-Manierist and neo-Symbolist.
The new imagery is rampant blending truth and fiction, memory and its deformation, the accuracy and vagueness, the horror and pleasure, eroticism and pornography, the myth and mysticism, humor and sarcasm : is the culture of kitsch.
The term improperly used to disparaging assessments by the great German bookish Hermann Broch, who quoted him in his famous text of 1933 and, later, the shooting in writing in 1950-1951, assumed negative meaning in the dialectic of confrontation classical values to those of post-Romanticism imbued with a culture symbolist aesthetic, decadent that dominated the late nineteenth century. Not inferior art, then, but the sublime beauty of art in all its excesses even the most perverse, sacrifice the values of harmony and balance.
Contemporary art aestheticism return records that enriched experiences and meanings of philosophical, psychoanalytical and social developed during the twentieth century. (Graziella Folchini Grassetto)

THE RING – the most common piece of jewellery can be full of meaning, a personal statement sometimes showing itself as a technical miracle or purely decorative and beautiful. It can demand attention, be an invitation to play, be filled with tears and secrets – and is to be worn for one day or for ever.
In homage to the ring Galleri Hnoss has invited all the jewellery artists exhibited in the gallery since the start in 1997 to produce one ring each. The result is now to be seen in the exhibition THE RING – jewel forever. The show consisting of over one hundred rings is a vibrant collection of different expressions, thoughts and forms

The selection of the 62 exhibits to feature in the special show SCHMUCK 2011 was made by Dr Rüdiger Joppien (Head of the Department of Art Nouveau and Modernism at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg), a recognised expert in the applied arts. In total over 650 designers had submitted applications to be granted a space to exhibit within SCHMUCK 2011. Featured in the exhibition are the works of a number of designers of international renown – names like Kimiaki Kageyama (Japan), Ted Noten (Netherlands), Lisa Walker (New Zealand), Ike Jünger (Germany) and Peter Bauhuis (Germany). For the first time this year the exhibition will also include work from China, Mexico and Turkey.

Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

Wendy Ramshaw und David Watkins © Artists

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »
