Discovered at the Annual Marzee Selection Of Graduate Work Jewellery
« It’s graduation show time! This weekend (2 july 2011) the ABKM, Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Maastricht presents their Graduates in the old SamDecor Factory. These objects are by Dutch Iris Verstappen, who graduated in Jewelry Design. » (THANKS to Matandmedesign, for pictures and english text !)
LOVE the « Systemic Lupus Erythematosus« , serie of « donuts » in porcelain ……. loved these « medicine » perhaps because actually I need this sort of medicine …………… but these ones are much more nicer than the ones I have to take !!!
« The title is ‘Systemic lupus erythematosus’, which is usually a medical term for an autoimmune connective tissue disease that can affect parts of the body. The immune system attacks the body’s cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. Obviously Iris transferred this description of the disease into a series of objects that show various stages of the illness.
All rings have an engraving of substances that are used for various sicknesses. When you have ‘Lupus’, your immune system turns against parts of the body it is designed to protect. I guess every ring is an image of a possible part of your body that could be affected and the possible medicine you would take to prevent the worst. I am just showing 5 of them, but Iris made about 20. »
‘Nifedipine’ – long-term treatment of high blood pressure
‘Esomeprazole’ – helps to reduce acid secretion in the stomach
‘Anticoagulant’ - substance that stops blood from clotting
‘Methylprednisolon ‘
‘Placebo’ – substance containing no medication
This object is the only one that is covered in gold leaves. Iris, who did a higher general continued education in Nature & Health before, presents here the idea of something that seems to be very valuable, but it is actually just covered with gold.
