« When winter veil gives way to spring awakening, it is time for continuous metamorphoses. Vanishing snow reveals sleeping nature, in the middle of melting, freezing and growing. White turns to grey, brown is suddenly green. Patient seeds in soil, waiting behind the ice. Bright light paints the colours. Delicate buds ready for bubbling blossom. Countless shapes without names. Still I won’t call them shapeless. »

EXPO ‘Not Too Precious’ – National Craft Gallery, Kilkenny (Ireland) – 22 Janv.–30 Mars 2016

 Not_Too_Precious exhib
(Attai Chen on left – Carina Chitsaz-Shoshtary on right)
Not Too Precious explores inspirational work by 25 international jewellers using materials for their expressive potential rather than for their intrinsic value. Radical artist jewellers of the late 1960s and 70s vigorously rejected the idea that jewellery should be considered ‘precious’ simply because of the materials of which it was made. Today, the use of a huge variety of materials in jewellery is far more accepted, but economic pressures are putting that freedom of artistic expression at potential risk as people revert to traditionally ‘valuable’ materials for ‘safety’. Not Too Precious challenges preconceptions about ‘non-precious’ materials by encouraging us to consider ‘accrued value’: what talented makers bring to their work through their ideas and skill.
The selected artists, who currently work in the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, create innovative, skilfully-made jewellery that is insightful and culturally resonant. Sometimes poignant, sometimes witty, their work communicates at many levels. It is above all honest and – for want of a better term – not too precious.

From the Coolest Corner: Nordic Jewellery presents an exciting and broad range of the contemporary studio jewellery created in the Nordic countries. From the Coolest Corner: Nordic Jewellery has a three-fold aim: to present the newest and most advanced contemporary Nordic jewellery, to intensify the discourse on today’s jewellery and strengthen the knowledge about this field, and to consolidate Nordic jewellery’s position in national and international arenas.
Jewellery will be presented in 3 different ways: a touring exhibition, a comprehensive book and an international Seminar Re-Public Jewellery, all shedding new light on the importance of this art. Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden will be the main collaborators in this project.
The touring exhibition From the Coolest Corner was opened at The National Museum – The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Oslo in January 2013. It then travelled to The DesignMuseum Finland in Helsinki, The Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen, The Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design in Tallin, The Röhsska Museum of Design and Applied Arts in Gothenburg and The Lithuanian Art Museum in Vilnius.
During “Schmuck 2015” it is shown at the Galerie Handwerk in Munich.
This main exhibition presents 159 works by 61 artists from the Nordic countries including five invited honorary artists and a selected group of artists from Estonia.
The international seminar Re-Public Jewellery will take place on March 13th at the Galerie Handwerk, 10:00-15:00.
To strengthen the interest in and knowledge of art jewellery, artistic tendencies and research within the field will be presented both in the seminar and in the book.
All these different presentations of Nordic studio jewellery together, aim at contributing to reinforce the image of contemporary Nordic Jewellery as expressive, reflexive and “cool”.
The project is a result of a cooperation between the three Norwegian partners (The National Museum –The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Oslo, The Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts and Oslo National Academy of the Arts) and their associated organizers in the Nordic museums of design and decorative arts, the Nordic crafts associations and the national colleges of art and design as well as, of course, our sponsors Nordic Culture Point, Nordic Culture Fund, Arts Council Norway.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Nordic Culture Point, the Nordic Culture Fund, the Arts Council Norway and Galerie Handwerk of the Bavarian Chamber of Crafts

(Anna Talbot  work)

This joint exhibition presents the best work in contemporary Nordic jewellery design. The exhibits consist of 159 pieces of jewellery by 61 Nordic designers, also featured a group of Estonian jewellery designers. The exhibition aims to present a broad overview of contemporary Nordic jewellery, generate dialogue and to provide more information on the national and international status of contemporary jewellery.

Nordic jewellery thrives and interests audiences. This is the shared view of the producers of this touring exhibition. Its message is that Nordic jewellery is experimental, bold, expressive – and cool.

Designers from the Nordic countries and Estonia were asked to send samples of their work to the touring exhibition’s five-member jury. The members of the jury were Liesbet den Besten of the Netherlands, Widar Halén of Norway, Love Jönsson of Sweden, Päivi Ruutiainen of Finland and Jorunn Veiteberg of Denmark.

SCHMUCK 2013 – Munich (DE) – PROGRAMME – 6-12 Mars 2013

SCHMUCK is an international jewellery competition which is staged every year in March as part of the Internationale Handwerksmesse. For over fifty years SCHMUCK has been the jewellery sector´s premier exhibition. From among the many applications received from designers to exhibit in SCHMUCK, a single juror makes his or her own personal selection of those whose work will be presented. This juror is generally an international curator and expert in contemporary jewellery design. In 2006 the Danner Foundation took over as patron of the exhibition. The organiser is the Handwerkskammer für München und Oberbayern (Chamber of Trades and Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria), and the venue host is the Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH.

EXPO ‘FROM THE COOLEST CORNER’ – National Museum of Art, Architecture & Design, Oslo (Norway) – 19 janv.-21 Avril 2013

FROM THE COOLEST CORNER - Nordic Jewellery

from the coolest corner

From the Coolest Corner – Nordic Jewellery presents groundbreaking and fresh jewellery from Northern Europe, a comprehensive selection of current works by artists from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Baltic States. The best and most innovative Scandinavian art jewellery is presented, assessing its possibilities and potential at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
The project presented in this publication, culminating in a symposium and a travelling exhibition, challenges stereotypical notions of northern European art jewellery. Do the typical Nordic trends of the nineteen-nineties still apply today? Indeed are there currently any general trends at all in Scandinavian design? Or has the orientation towards international design become so dominant that there are no longer any regional characteristics?
Renowned experts have made a selection of representative works, as a basis for researching the role of northern European jewellery in the context of international art.

With 160 works by artists from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Baltic States, this publication considers the significance, strategies and trends of Nordic jewellery art in the early twenty-first century. Expert authors present the backgrounds, developments and characteristics of the contemporary jewellery.

EXPO ‘Ashes and Diamonds’ – Galleria Pihatto, Lappeenranta (Finland) – 31 Oct.-25 Nov. 2012

Ashes and Diamonds
Contemporary jewellery from Finland

EXPO 'Ashes and Diamonds' - Galleria Pihatto, Lappeenranta (Finland) - 31 Oct.-25 Nov. 2012 dans Anna RIKKINEN (FI) Ashes_Diamonds

Ashes and Diamonds is a curated contemporary jewellery exhibition, that’s part of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012- program. Contemporary jewellery, which is rarely showcased in Finland, is a marginal and groundbreaking form of art. 18 artists and 36 works in total were chosen for the exhibition, which is curated by Päivi Ruutiainen (who’s currently preparing her doctorate on contemporary jewellery)  in cooperation with HUMAK and The Jewellery Art Association in Finland.
The mission of the exhibition is to break both the preconceptions about jewellery as an art form as well as the limits of the art world. The project will also give an opportunity for finnish jewellery artists to showcase their art and increase public knowledge of contemporary jewellery.

After Platina, the exhibition can be seen at :
Lahti, Finland: Muotohuoltamo, 3.10.2012 – 24.10.2012
Lappeenranta, Finland: Pappilan Pihatto, 31.10.2012 – 25.11.2012

EXPO ‘… Dal silenzio’ – Marijke Studio, Padova (IT) – 20 Avril-20 Juin 2012

Marijke Studio presents:
Julia Maria Künnap (Estonia) – Janna Syvanoja (Finland) – Castello Hansen (Denmark).

« In a noisy world, silence can be a luxury »
Marijke Studio presents 3 jewellery designers from the north of Europe: Estonia, Finland, Denmark.
Hansen and Kunnap, exhi areiting for the first time in Italy, (education and, at the present, teachers at Tallinn and Copenhagen Art Academies); Syvanoya studied at Helsinki Industrial Design Institute and is showing for the second time at Marijke Studio. The artist have works in private and public collections and are exhibiting in the major international jewelry galleries and museums.

On show a fifty jewellery pieces in natural materials (obsidian, quartz, ebony, recicled-paper, gold),
and in synthetic materials as cybatool, reconstructed coral. Each of the artists uses a very clean, recognizable language, achieving appealing, abstract, poetical forms.
