For centuries, the South Seas have inspired buccaneers, explorers and dreamers alike – now it is the jewellery designers turn. All the pieces of jewellery created for the South Seas topic and their accompanying stories will be virtually exhibited on our homepage (and on Facebook) and also presented in the elaborate exhibition documentation.
In November 2010, a pre-judging will take place by means of the sent in photos and texts. Thereby, the work of approximately 40-50 participants will be selected. These items will not only be presented virtually, but also physically, at our exhibition room “Trüffel” at Friends of Carlotta gallery.

In February 2011, an independent jury will select the best of the 40-50 works and award it the FoC jewellery award and fellowship prize 2011. As always, the audience prize will be awarded by the visitors of the exhibition. The works that were nominated for the virtual exhibition will also be on display in “Trüffel” at Friends of Carlotta. They will be shown on a screen as well as in the available exhibition documentation.

The Store will once again host Charmed, an exhibition of artist-made charms by jewelers from around the country.  Beginning February 10, 2011, charms will be available in our Store and on our website. Charms can be purchased individually for a charm bracelet, or can be worn alone as a pendant.  Buy a pair of charms to wear as earrings, or give one to a friend, a sibling, or a significant other.  Charms are a great way to start your collection of artist-made jewelry, or to add to your existing collection.

A solo exhibition of wearable and sculptural work  by Jillian Moore - enamel on metal

« Nomen Dubium—“doubtful name”
 Our natural tendency to seek out patterns results in a sensitivity to the congruities in biological forms. Deliberate exploitation of these phenomena results in objects that are both ambiguous and evocative. Some are organs removed from the body in which they once belonged, revealing structures with unknown functions. Others are complete specimens tagged with labels. Signs of dissection as well as taxonomy provide evidence of attempts to demystify these new organisms. However, this approach leaves many unanswered questions and highlights the inherent ethical compromise in these methods of understanding.
I choose materials and techniques that are transformative, resulting in objects that do not readily reveal the processes of their making. Copper may be hidden under layers of paint, the only exposed metal oxidized. The electroforming process allows for wax forms to be coated in copper leaving a hollow shell with textural encrustations–evidence of the accretive nature of the process of building copper on a molecular level. The resin pieces are light in weight, built on a core of carved foam that is strengthened by successive layers of an opaque, water-based composite resin. The clear epoxy resin is then layered with paint to create a depth of surface typically expected of glass work. The slick gloss of the resin further mimics biology.«

« My work is created in imitation of life forms.  They invite touch with their curves and pebble-smooth surfaces.  Soft, organic shapes based loosely and speculatively on biology grow and morph across skin and fabric.  They coil around, slide along slug trails, or root themselves like coral.  Often their methods of attachment or interaction imply a biological function.
It is important for me that each piece becomes a hybrid of influences.  Flora and fauna, fruit and genitalia, organ and body, all contained within one piece.  Desire for them should be tempered with hesitation.  Objects that can represent my conflicting interests feel satisfyingly pregnant. 
I choose colors that are attractive on a base level.  It is important that they be luscious, and I rationalize my choices based on my amateur interests in biology.   The texts of basic public education in the life sciences linger in my memory.  Sometimes the colors are more mammalian; sometimes they are referential of marine invertebrates as the borders of one color vibrate against another. 
The surfaces are pleasing from a distance and hold that promise as the viewer gets closer, zooming in with the lens of the eye to find detail just a few inches away.  It is important that they not become demystified upon close inspection.  This is key to what creates “authenticity” for me.  Removed from an assumed context, the pieces feel jarringly out of place, alien.  They have the quality of specimens taken out of their natural environment.  »

« While attending this year’s SNAG Conference in Houston, a chronic nagging question was amplified. What, exactly, is it that I do ? In passing conversations I never seem to be able to explain it to any acceptable degree without endless digressive hurdles. In the simplest terms I set out with the word “jewelry” though even this is a personal conversational concession. The litany of descriptors we can now alter jewelry with can leave a person breathless – art jewelry, contemporary jewelry, sculptural jewelry to name a few. Casual conversations always include “no, I don’t make that kind of jewelry”. And when I start using phrases like “abstract life forms” and “composite resin” people’s faces screw into frustration. When I’m feeling less motivated I just say “I make jewelry out of plastics . . . various plastics”. But it feels condescending both to whomever I’m speaking with, and what it is I like about my work. I’ve spent nine years and borrowed tens of thousands of dollars for two degrees – a BFA with the words “Metalsmithing and Jewelry Making” at the end and an MFA with the alternate “Jewelry and Metal Arts” attached. But I find none of this mixing and matching of terminology to be of any help when trying to actually articulate what it is I do with all of my time. »

« My work combines electroforming and fabrication to achieve incidental organic textures as well as smooth biological forms. The surfaces are then painted. Abrasives remove paint from high points in the organic surface, and areas of interest may be printed on. « In my current body of work I seek to examine how jewelry functions as an image, a means to construct desire, and the consequence of transfer from image to object and back to image. Found images are appropriated from a variety of sources, including magazines and various publications then printed on thin sheet of metal paper resembling the historical tin-types. This game of skill requires that the player complete the image by putting the jewels in to the impressions. « My goal is associating the idea of intimacy in jewelry objects to the body while the rope functions as a vehicle which conveys metaphorical meaning of connection. When the piece is on the body, it seems to penetrate or bind the wearer. I feel that it expresses the physical and conceptual connection between piece and wearer. It is important to me that the wearer can be able to relate to the symbolic meaning of the rope and at the same time feel themselves tied and connected with the rope or knot while wearing my work. » (SUNG-YEOUL LEE (USA) )

« Natural forms, processes and movement inspire me to create jewellery. When a form emerges from different elements, it tends to follow no exact model in which it crystallizes. Materials like stones or life forms like plants all have a different shape and character which has its origin somewhere in a void not comprehendible for the human mind.
