« Jewellery is an object of value. This is the single most important notion in my work as an artist-jeweller.

I make jewellery from old camera lenses. The lenses I use have already retired from active duty, covered in a light layer of dust, sitting in some obscure corner in a camera shop. But Imagine if we were able to talk with these lenses what great stories they might tell us! They have witnessed so many memorable and precious moments from people’s lives.

An investigation of the meaning of ‘value’ is integral in the work of goldsmiths such as myself. What is the real meaning of value for human beings?
This question, always present in my mind, is what drives me to keep

The original « Pearl Grey » of 2009 was an assemblage work consisting of found and made elements of porcelain, glass, wood, plastic and pearl. It referenced a traditional cup and saucer of which the cup had been magically replaced by a bead necklace. For this new work I have translated that idea to the typology of a glass ‘saucer and cup’. It is again a combination of found and made elements but this time the work is completely transparent; almost like an x-ray of it’s predecessor

The ‘Still Life’ Brooches that I have made between 2009 and 2012 can be seen as a contemporary interpretation of 17th and 18th century Dutch Still Life paintings. This subject was preferable used to portray items of daily life that were emotionally and economically significant for people of that time.  Within my ‘Still Lifes’, I sliced existing glasswork and rearranged them into new compositions. They represented a perfect translation of the three dimensional to the two dimensional, the realistic vista of the glasses to the medium of jewellery. The body is taking on the role of the canvas as it were…  Within the new work I explored another way of looking at tableware than in a static composition: I wanted to express a certain precarious dynamic that is inherent to drinking glasses during a sociable meal. I tried to catch this moment of a glass tumbling, undecided yet if it is going to fall or stay upright.

Just as men are not just men, and women just women, meat is never just meat. It has it´s past and origin, a story which is so often simply forgotten. Living creatures which are very much alive until they are nothing more than materials, for those who still choose to use them. Even the life before their death is so often more than problematic, as we all know. As we all know.

 I started to re-consider a piece from 2001, that never has been sold, although I liked it very much, ‘Beautiful City – Pink Stairs’.  This piece is really symmetrical, so I decided to look for a way to separate it in two parts and finish both parts in a different way, in order to get two different pieces. I have re-collected parts of other (unsold) pieces from about the same time (1999 and 2000) and have been re-approaching and re-thinking them: I made ‘Crystals’ with them, like I did in my most recent work. So I have been mixing time and thinking. And size: the sizes I used earlier were different from the sizes I used in the later ‘Beautiful City’ series, they wouldn’t have fit. But because the ‘Crystals’ are liquid (they adapt to the square) the size of the elements was not importantanymore. So I could re-take these old pieces into the new time now, I have re-used them, re-connected them.
This ‘expansion’ offered me more possibilities: I re-used the material I already had without loss of material or time. The possibility to re-make the old pieces still exists. And it gave me two new pieces. So I multiplied my possibilities. A new life.

 Formal Research – A necklace (2015) composing of six chain units is the starting point of the group of six rings. A closed-end loop of each ring was divided in sections, one / two / three /… / six, by the difference between the fat and thin parts. The works were made under the following keywords: dividing / sequencing / sizing.
Formal Research initially focused on one classical type of jewellery: the chain. The project is mainly about the form of each connecting chain unit and how the unit connects to its neighbours.
During the sculpting process, the shapes were transformed because of them being in the hand and through time. I did not edit the outcomes and will present the rings as they are. The try-outs are the finals and vice versa.

 In the Nineties, in the making of the older brooch, my goal was to control the metal, to have the metal do whatever I wanted. In this latest brooch, made a few days ago, I let instead the metal take control over myself, and let it take me wherever its will would go.

The reason why I chosen my self-portrait, is that it is probably one of my most well known pieces of jewellery. It is made in steel and etched.  The material and techniques I mostly work with. For the Re-version I saw out the silhouette in 2 mm veneer, divided the image in 3 parts and painted them in similar but for each piece different colours, before I glued them together. The fact that they are divided in three parts, with the dark sawing-line between, gives them a comic-like impression.
This impression is even emphasised by the bigger size, which is possible by the lightness of the material, and is completely different from the original steel-one. While the surface of the steel-portrait and other previous work was the key technology for building the image, the colour for some years been a part of my jewellery.

 

To revisit, remake, salvage, reinterpret, adapt, convert, converse, rethink…
  Why have we asked some of the artists we work with as gallery owners to reinterpret one of their works? We could say it’s because we’re interested in talking about time. And by “revisiting” we mean discussing the notion of time. But in what way? That’s the question.
Time passes, it is made, interpreted, felt and suffered, it escapes, drifts away, becomes trapped or stretched, sometimes it is intelligently ignored and, why not, it is exercised. Reinterpreting a work, a fiction or precis is a way of addressing time, a way of exploring a landscape in order to try and understand it. And we thought this exercise would provide an interesting opportunity to discuss time.
Revisiting in order to reflect… an exercise for the artist.
  Are there any changes in these artists’ works? Should there be? Is time involved? Without a shadow of a doubt, the answer is yes. But that barely scrapes the surface of what we want to know.
We’re more likely to find out what we want to know if the work enables us to answer questions such as: What kind of time is involved? Is there any usefulness? Is there any spirituality? Are there any aesthetics? Is there any abstraction? Is there any progress?
The exhibition is also designed to be understood through an analysis of the different types of answers provided by the works as a whole. As you will see, there are answers that simplify, offering minor changes, non-answers, coherent answers (if you have prior knowledge of the artist’s trajectory), inspired answers, uninventive answers… As we have said, evaluating the “revisits” as a whole provides additional knowledge.
When it comes down to it, what we most value is the sensation we observe and feel when the artist takes some distance and moves away from the centre stage in an attempt to provide an answer. As observers, we believe this circumstance helps to achieve universality and thus provide an intellectual satisfaction, that of communicating and objectifying the creation to the full in order to express and play with a more authentic reality.
Revisiting in order to look afresh… the viewer’s exercise.
We switch from observation to understanding, and vice versa. We observe in order to find differences between similar things and we understand when we find similarities between different things. Accustomed as we are today to viewing several pieces in a highly random fashion, pausing to stop in order to take a fresh look at a work “inaugurated” some time ago is another exercise we wish to propose. This exercise may help us assimilate better in this era of accumulation and, on occasions, superficiality. There can be no doubt that the way in which a work attracts and engages us is based on the knowledge we may have of it.
Knowledge without criticism is an indication of the end of everything. Yet, on the other hand, what can be said of criticism without knowledge? Are we capable of enjoying what these workers of art offer us? Will we be capable of evaluating what they show us? Can we offer knowledge-based criticism? Frankly, we find there is a lack of humility on the part of the viewer. And we’re all viewers.
Let’s enjoy this opportunity.

Mari Funaki award : and the WINNERS are …. – EXPO at Gal. Funaki (AU) – 13 Aout-13 Sept. 2014 -

The results of the Mari Funaki Award for Contemporary Jewellery are in:
the winner of the prize for an established artist is Kiko Gianocca with his series of 3 necklaces, ‘Veneer’.
The two emerging winners are Patricia Correia Domingues with her pendant from the ‘Duality’ series, and Sara Gackowska with her ‘Membrane’ brooch from the ‘Methamorophosis’ series.
The judges were also very impressed with the work of Inari Kiuru (emerging) and Jiro Kamata (established) and gave each a commendation. It’s been a wonderful night and congratulations to all!

 The « Mari Funaki Award for Contemporary Jewellery » EXHIBITION runs until September 13.

Mari Funaki was a unique and passionate advocate for contemporary jewellery in Australia, both through her own remarkable practice and her establishment and directorship of Gallery Funaki.
This Award aims to celebrate Mari’s legacy by rewarding the skills and vision of jewellers both here and overseas and by providing a platform for outstanding new work to be shown here in Australia. A panel of three judges will award prizes in both established and emerging categories, with total prize money valued at AUD$11,000.

The judges are:
Warwick Freeman, an eminent New Zealand jeweller who has exhibited with Gallery Funaki since 1995. He is the recipient of the Francoise van den Bosch Prize (2002) and the Bayerischer Staatpreis ‘Modern Classic’ (2013).
Simon Cottrell, a prominent Australian jeweller and educator and currently acting head of the Gold and Silversmithing Workshop at ANU, Canberra. Cottrell has an extensive exhibition history and his work is held in numerous international collections.
Julie Ewington, a leading Australian art specialist with almost 40 years experience as an academic, writer and curator. Most recently Curatorial Manager at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art, she has a particular interest in contemporary jewellery and has written extensively on the topic, most recently in the 2013 Lark publication, ‘Contemporary Jewelry in Perspective’. She was recognised this year with an Australia Council for the Arts Visual Arts Award.
The Award is generously supported by Vivienne and Leo Donati, Johannes Hartfuss and Fabian Jungbeck

And the winners are…

In the established category, the judges chose Kiko Gianocca’s Veneer necklaces.

There are two winners in the emerging category. The first is Patrícia Correia Domingues with her pendant from the Duality series.
The second emerging prize goes to Sara Gackowska for her Membrane brooch from the Methamorphosis series .

In the emerging category, the judges also gave a commendation to Inari Kiuru’s two brooches from the Evolution series (right), saying “this commendation recognises the conceptual adventurousness of her project, which takes her across diverse materials to explore the inter-connectedness of natural and urban systems.”

And a commendation in the established category went to Jiro Kamata, for his Spiegel necklace (right). The judges said “this classical graduated necklace is composed of camera lenses and mirrors that bring viewers into the very substance of the piece. But, note, everyone who sees themselves will do so from a different perspective. This, in combination with its impeccable making, comprises its simple elegance.”

We extend warm congratulations to all the winning artists and thank everyone involved in the exhibition, which received an overwhelmingly positive response on this, its opening night.

 

In the established category, the judges chose Kiko Gianocca’s Veneer necklaces (2014, neckpiece, wood veneer, balsawood, brass, 220x240x18mm). Of these works, they commented: “They have a boldness of scale that makes them look challenging to wear, but the choice of materials and the subtlety of the construction make these pieces exceptionally successful on the body.
Veneer 1, 2 and 3 are deceptively straightforward titles, but we found that the pieces evoke many different associations and interpretations. They move and shift on the body, with their beautiful hinging adapting to the wearer. This is exceptional work.”

There are two winners in the emerging category. The first is Patrícia Correia Domingues with her pendant from the Duality series.

The judges said: “We greatly admired the elegant oppositions between the two main materials- dense hematite on the top surface, and spongy bio-resin on the base. There’s a wonderful necessary relationship between the two materials and the way the top surface appears broken, and fractured, precisely because of their interaction.”

Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography is the first museum exhibition to explore how contemporary jewelry artists transform and add new meaning to the pervasive images of this digital age.  Drawing inspiration from historic daguerreotypes to manipulated digital images, international jewelry artists explore changing views of beauty and the human body; examine social, political, and cultural issues; probe perceptions of memory and desire; and question the broader relation of jewelry to society and personal identity, issues central to the contemporary experience.

 

More than 80 renowned artists from over 20 countries are represented —including

Gijs Bakker, Wafaa Bilal, Jordan Doner, Mari Ishikawa, Jiro Kamata, Sooyeon Kim, Iris Nieuwenburg, Kara Ross, Gabriela Sanchez, Bernhard Schobinger, Bettina Speckner,

Joyce Scott, Kiff Slemmons, Andy Warhol and Noa Zilberman.

 

The connection between photography and jewelry extends back more than 150 years to the invention of the photographic process.  The exhibition will provide historical context for this evolving relationship by presenting outstanding nineteenth-century pieces, many of which have never before been exhibited. In recent years, both photography and art jewelry have changed dramatically, and the exhibition will present cutting-edge videos and installations that will provide viewers a broader perspective of contemporary jewelry now.
Organized by MAD’s Curator of Jewelry, Ursula Ilse-Neuman, Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography will be on view from May 13 to September 14, 2014.
Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Ursula Ilse-Neuman, MAD’s Acting Chief Curator Lowery Stokes Sims, Dutch author and jewelry curator Liesbeth den Besten, photography expert Mark Durant, Curator of Decorative Arts at the Toledo Museum of Art Jutta Page, American author and Metalsmith editor Suzanne Ramljak, photography historian and critic Lyle Rexer and German author and critic Ellen Maurer Zillioli.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a full range of educational programming, including lectures and panels for adults, workshops for young visitors and families, in-house demonstrations of jewelry making, curator-led tours of the exhibition, and a variety of film screenings.

« For many years Jiro Kamata made the most beautiful pieces of jewellery relying on authentic camera lenses. He now abandoned the anecdotical side of these objects, but his love for glass, reflections and photography remained all-important for his inspiration. In his design he kept to a minimalistic approach, and based on these preferences he manages to turn an idea into a jewellery piece.
If an artist is looking for the essence in his work, the starting point becomes ever more crucial. Kamata’s primary concern is deciding on his working material. He must be intrigued in such a way that his imagiation starts to spark; after that, the material will lead the way. This happened this time when he discovered dichroic mirror, which is glass with a special technical finish that reflects only two colours, eliminating all others. It produces remarkably clear, yet surprising reflections. Caught in just a simple, forged silver setting the artist managed to capture the alluring effect of free floating soapbubbles.
The brooches in the exhibition are more complex. They are made up from several layers of glass and foil which are visually interacting. Kamata based his designs on something called the bokeh-effect, derived from the Japanese word ‘boke’, which means ‘blur’ or ‘haze’. We know it as the almost downy, often colourful circles visible in photographs when the lens renders out-of-focus points of light. These pieces of jewellery emphasize the importance of looking at the actual object: only then can the refined play of light be experienced. The title of the exhibition ‘Bi’ refers not only to the two colours reflected or the two layers of glass encased in the brooches, but also to reality as we know it and the fairytale world summoned in the jewellery. » Ward Schrijver  (© Galerie Rob Koudijs)

« Hanoi – Last weekend, Mercedes-Benz, ViveKKevin gallery and CUC gallery jointly opened a jewelry exhibition under the title and with the double meaning of “Precious Mechanisms”, at MAM ART Projects museum in Hanoi. The event introduced to public the modern luxury jewelry collections of artists Vivek Chaudhary, Jiro Kamata and Duong Sam Tho.
Nowadays, jewelry is mass produced, globally. However, this exhibit displayed exclusive items derived from distinctive ideas of three innovative artist: Vivek Chaudhary, Jiro Kamata and Duong Sam Tho. They brought alive three themes of art: “Heart”, “Mirror” and “Frozen”, using different materials and manufacturing methods.
As part of the “Heart” collection, six silver hearts were processed and polished, heated and blow-stretched. These hearts are brooches inspired by Hindu culture in India and expressed through the hand of Vivek Chaudhary. Two main colors in product of ‘Heart’ are red and blue representing two opposite emotions of people. Exceptional, the “Heart” art-work, a creative achievement of artist Vivek Chaudhary, uses the painting process and high-tech colors from Mercedes-Benz, normally only applied on the new S-Class in order to create a polished and durable appearance.
“I admire this craftsmanship – combining art and auto technology, high value materials and old items in order to create modern luxury jewelry. There are similarities between artists and skilled engineers who are develop and manufacture our cars.”, said Mr. Michael Behrens, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Vietnam. He added: “Our customers deeply understand the value and the passion behind both artwork and luxury limousines.”

The “Mirror” artist Jiro Kamata used old camera lenses which have been crafted and sculpted into high value metals in order to create the necklace and brooches. Growing up in his father’ jewelry shop in Hirosaki, Japan, his hobby was collecting old cameras at flea markets in Munich. Jiro Kamata combines both passion and experience to make his ‘Mirror’-artwork. The old lens resemble pearls, while at the same time reflecting on one’s real life.
In ‘Frozen’, Sam Tho Duong was inspired by nature after a heavy snowfall. These crustaceans and flowers seem to be bordered by tiny ice-crystals, but in fact small pearls are attached tightly to the sliver-oxidized, it develops a wonderful color of dark grey and black coal. Artists has put people wearing these rings into the frozen creature’s position.
Combining art and technical perfection between unique materials and borderless creativity, these three artists have taken modern jewelry beyond expectation: “Precious Mechanism”. Based on the famous sentence that “Jewelry will choose its wearer”’, these artworks are only exhibited in major museums around the world and special galleries. » (MercedesBenz Vietnam)

This year the exhibits accepted for SCHMUCK were selected by Bernhard Schobinger of Richterswil in Switzerland. A trained goldsmith, Schobinger is one of today´s leading jewellery designers. His works are regarded as influential in determining new directions in style and the man himself is seen as an artist with a unique aesthetic sense who has broken new ground particularly in avant-garde jewellery design. Not surprisingly, the works selected by him for SCHMUCK 2013, reflect this background. « They include a number of exciting new artists, but also many familiar names, » reveals Dieter Dohr. The exhibits at SCHMUCK include works by Robert Baines (Australia), David Bielander (Switzerland), Sungho Cho (Korea), Sam Tho Duong (Vietnam), Kimiaki Kageyama and Ryuichiro Nakamura (Japan) and Bruce Metcalf (USA).

 SCHMUCK is an international jewellery competition which is staged every year in March as part of the Internationale Handwerksmesse. For over fifty years SCHMUCK has been the jewellery sector´s premier exhibition. From among the many applications received from designers to exhibit in SCHMUCK, a single juror makes his or her own personal selection of those whose work will be presented. This juror is generally an international curator and expert in contemporary jewellery design. In 2006 the Danner Foundation took over as patron of the exhibition. The organiser is the Handwerkskammer für München und Oberbayern (Chamber of Trades and Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria), and the venue host is the Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH.
