Schmuck 2013 – EXPO 'This is where they met' - Platina at Frame, Neue Messe Munchen, Munich (DE) - 6-12 mars 2013 dans Adam GRINOVICH (SE) 2cd4940625bdbf702de40ee1db72a4baJewellery Sessions offers an online platform for artists from different disciplines. It aims at starting a dialogue, sharing thoughts, exchanging visions and collaborating freely. Hereby focusing on the synergy between a photograph, a piece of furniture, an installation, a jewellery piece, other artworks, and the way these artforms come together through extended research.
The visual, how you see things, how you approach them, how you view them from various perspectives, is a common denominator in how we work with contemporary jewellery today. In fact, we (from our discipline) are mostly interested in people; in things people create, why they create it, who is interested in it, and how people live with exceptional products of individual makers. Jewellery Sessions sets out to contribute to current debates of the notion of contemporary jewellery today as an artform, and its impact in the discourse of visual art and design. Within this context we present a platform for experimentation, reflection, discussion and display, to become more flexible and interconnected.
For Jewellery Sessions 2013, contemporary jewellery artists /artist groups are invited from Europe, Japan, U.S. , Latin America, … to join. In collaboration with a photographer, with similar artistic visions, these invited jewellery artists work towards a photograph. The image shows a narrative view on jewellery and should represent more than a profile as for example in a catalogue. The project is an artist initiative to investigate in and reflect on « crossover thinking » in applied and visual arts and a research in different forms of presentation or display of contemporary jewellery.

Schmuck 2013 – EXPO ‘Te mato por que te amo’ – Atelier Shari Pierce, Munich (DE) – 6-9 Mars 2013

You are cordially invited to the duo exhibition « Te mato por que te amo » by artists Jorge Manilla (Belgium/Mexico) and Shari Pierce (USA/Germany).

Exhibition Dates: March 6th-9th, 2013

 te mato porque te amo

Manilla and Pierce had the idea to exhibit their new work together in a domestic space (a former apartment) ) because they are both working in one way or another with the themes of love and hope, passion and violence, loss and destruction, truth and consequences.

Pierce will show an installation of her new work “He loves me, He loves me not” and Manilla presents his new body of work “Contemporary Savagery”.
« As many of the satellite events that surround Schmuck, Te Mato por que Te Amo (I Kill you Because I Love you) promises to be an interesting one.
Two separate rooms in a private home will host two diametrically different exhibitions. Two different artists, two different practices, and two different themes. Themes which, in life ocassionally intertwine; often between the walls of private homes.
In one room, Mexican artist Jorge Manilla explores Contemporary Savagery: raw emotions such as fear, jealousy, cowardice, pain, rancor and bad blood, all concepts buried within the motives for violence and the ways these manifest in our contemporary world. He aims to find the exact point in which a person becomes the victim and another one the victimizer. His research ends in the body; in unappealing ornaments, troubled, melted objects that create frightening and confusing images that create an inner cataclysmic reaction in the viewer and the wearer. At the end, those objects transcend their materiality to become dissected feelings, broken memories and empty vessels that reveal the fragility of our situation as human beings in a hostile environment.

In an opposite room -a bedroom- and spectrum, American artist Shari Pierce deals secretly, delicately, with the game Effeuiller la Marguerite or “He loves me, he loves me not”, in which one person seeks to determine whether the object of their affection returns that affection or not by plucking one petal off a flower (usually a daisy) for each phrase. The phrase this person tells aloud on picking off the last petal supposedly represents the truth between the object of their affection loving them or not. Pierce allegorically recreates the phrase and its meaning, over and over, using several languages, summery colors and perishable materials that speak about love, hope and loss, in the way these feelings often and inevitably collide.
Together but separate, these two artists share a continent, a passion for tackling complex matters and for a few days, a home. A coexistence that brave Schmuck visitors will certainly enjoy to witness. » Valeria  Siemelink

EXPO ‘Mirror Mirror’ – Espace Solidor, Cagnes-sur-mer (FR) – 23 Juin-23 Sept. 2012

Jorge Manilla Only Memories

« This is not just another story, this work tells the story of our lifes, a story of love and death, of feelings and tempations, Wild moments, intense moments, moments that make us feel that we are alive… » Jorge Manilla

Please don't take away my heart by Jorge Manilla
« Please don’t take away my heart » by Jorge Manilla

Platina welcomes Jorge Manilla from Mexico City to his first exhibition in Sweden.
The exhibition is a great contrast to the light Swedish minimalist idiom. Instead we are invited into an odyssey into the endless void black holes that are simultaneously filled with feelings indescribable in words.

Jorge Manilla’s work challenges us to confront the deepest feelings and fears we usually avoid. It consists a huge production with wild mixtures of touching stories and twisted relationships. The language is special in which experimental solutions are framed by love and religious upbringing.
What we see is the dark side of passion, the hollow interior of a body, torn apart by emotions. The work is dark, twisted and broken forms of cut leather, which is reminiscent of hopeless knots in ones stomach, burning sores or open wounds. The series is a collection of very unusual and unique jewellery pieces with moral and physical anatomy of the human soul. It is a reminder that human strength in the end overcome the sad and wounding moments. It is a reminder that the horrifying, in fact, is insanely beautiful, and sounds of vulnerability are just signs of heroic strength.

Jorge Manilla, the son of a family of Mexican goldsmiths and engravers, studied visual arts at the Academy of San Carlos, in Mexico. He received a highly technical jewellery training at the Academy of Craft and Design from the Mexican Institute of Fine Arts. But it was until he moved to Belgium, years later, where he enrolled at the Karel de Grote Academy in Antwerp, that he was forced to forget about the traditional notion he had to jewellery, to let his technical skills aside and to research about the cultural meaning of jewellery, its conceptual possibilities and to experiment with materials and techniques . – Sofia Björkman 2012

Klassiker der Schmuck 2012
Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen, Deutschland

This year there will be a retrospective exhibition of the work of a « Modern Classic » designer. In 2012 the chosen designer is the German goldsmith Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen. Together with Francesco Pavan, Lorenzen was the first goldsmith to be awarded the Herbert Hofmann Prize, back in 1973. The award presentation ceremony, which this year is being held on Saturday, 17 March 2012, is always one of the highlights at SCHMUCK. Lorenzen, who was born in 1942 in Hagen, Westphalia, taught at the « Staatliche Zeichenakadamie » in Hanau from 1974 to 1985, while also acting as a visiting lecturer at the « Hochschule für Gestaltung » in Pforzheim, at which college he then, in 1985, took up an appointment as a professor. He continued to teach there in the jewellery design department until retiring in 2008.

“Schmuck-Show 2012” is a jewellery presentation with professional models, set in an exceptional light and sound design. With the cooperation of several artists who exhibit their works at different places in Munich during these ‘Jewellery Days’, on the evening before the start of the trade fair jewellery is being presented directly on the body. The jewellery stirs emotions and prompts diverse conversations. At the bar, artists, jewellery lovers and laymen meet; there is room for an animated exchange. The project has been initiated by Olga Zobel Biro

B-SIDE Festival – 2nd Edition – Amsterdam – 3-6 Nov. 2011

B-side DownTown Art Jewellery Festival:
An energetic, self-created festival for jewellery artists. It brings together a series of jewellery exhibitions and performances on different locations throughout the city of Amsterdam.

B-side DownTownArtJewellery Festival is an energetic, self-created festival for jewellery artists. The 2nd edition takes place from the 3rd until the 6th of November 2011 and brings together a series of jewellery exhibitions and performances in the city of Amsterdam. This event is initiated by min-association; Maaike Ebbinge – Iris Tsante – Noémie Doge,

who graduated from Amsterdam’s Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2007 and 2008.
B-side gives artists the opportunity to explore new ways of showing their jewellery to the world. Each artist is encouraged to take responsibility for his of her own part in a bigger chain or route.
B-side emphasises the festive side of a festival and celebrate the art of jewellery. The aim of the festival is to show different ways of presenting and thinking about art jewellery through exhibitions and performances. It allows exploration of spaces that aren’t usually used for exhibition purposes, for example parks, ateliers, bicycles, empty buildings, a living room, a café or the back of a car.
B-side happens simultaneously with other inspiring jewellery events in Amsterdam.
B-side shows designs that go very much beyond mass-produced jewellery. It shows an artistic way of presenting and dealing with jewellery. The value of this jewellery is not defined by precious metals, but by their visual force and strong concept.
There are many jewellery artists working in Amsterdam. Three of the four most renowned Dutch jewellery galleries are based here, and the jewellery department of the Rietveld Academy is well-k

nown for its active students and teachers. We are very happy to be able to celebrate Amsterdam’s special connection to jewellery with this special platform for art jewellery.
B-side, another side of jewellery.

B-side DownTownArtJewellery Festival is organised by: min-association.com (Maaike Ebbinge, Iris Tsante & Noémie Doge)

Where the heart is

”Strong wind in the face, the sea roaring loudly, lots of curious materials hidden in the sand, my thoughts explore the freedom of space. This is where the heart is, this is where my jewellery pieces are born.” M.E.

“I like working intensively with materials. When the materials start “speaking” and taking their own way, that is where their heart is.” I.T.

“I search for hidden stories by dismantling forgotten relics; I reinvent them picking up the pieces; I’m a treasure hunter, ferreting where their heart is. ” N.D.

Jewellery from Words
The girls from GLA love to play with words, having each their own process in jewellery making, which in their hands, becomes both profound and funny. Galatée Pestre tells the importance of jewellery with signs, while Laurence Verdier explores sensuality, and  Aude Medori shows  commitment to adornment.

Memories of Mexico
« In April 2010 I was in Mexico City to attend a jewellery symposium called Walking the Gray Area. After a week of wonderfully inspiring talks and exhibitions, it was time to come home. I said my goodbyes and went back to my hotel to pack in readiness for my flight home the next morning. Then, I heard a news flash, which said the skies over Europe were closed due to a volcanic eruption in Iceland. This was too ridiculous to be true. I had to get home as I was travelling to Australia in two days’ time. But, as the hours morphed into days it quickly became clear that I was going nowhere soon…
A blitz-like camaraderie developed as dozens of jewellers gather in disbelief, talking of nothing other than how they were going to get home. We were all stranded under a dark cloud, and there was nothing anyone could do but wait for it to pass.
I sat in my hotel room, reluctantly listening to the screech of the organ grinder who had based himself beneath my window. It sounded cute at first, but after a week it became a nerve grinder. To block out this noise I began to think about my time in Mexico and its rich and colourful culture of chaos. It had been a wonderful experience, and I felt sad that this cloud, which was holding me prisoner, would overshadow the memories of my time there.
Then, it all became clear. Why not make something positive out of this? The idea for a new exhibition was born…
Needless to say, I never did get to Australia.«  Jo Bloxham, curator
