‘Twice loved’ is a new collection of work by award winning contemporary jeweller, Julie Blyfield, based on interpretations of the historical patterns inscribed on discarded nineteenth-century ceramic shards and early twentieth-century kimono garments.

« Twice loved is a new collection of jewellery pieces based on interpretations of the historical patterns inscribed on discarded nineteenth-century ceramic shards and early twentieth-century kimono garments, which I photographed at the History Museum in Tokyo on a recent trip to Japan. Having merged, reworked and translated elements from the Japanese fabrics and the textures and patterns of the ceramic shards, the resulting rich layers of pattern were incorporated into precious items of jewellery. With sterling silver as my preferred choice of material, I use the traditional technique of metal chasing, which is a method of hand texturing the metal surface. Colour has been added, not only to provide contrast, but also a link to the original fabrics and ceramic fragments.

For years I have accumulated old pottery shards retrieved from diggings around the township of Silverton, north of Broken Hill in New South Wales; an area which from the mid to late 1800s was rich in silver mines. Decorated with remnants of landscape scenes, botanical motifs and scrolls of repetitive patterns, the random shards of old English ceramic plates and cups are representative of the everyday ware and domestic life of colonial Australia. The Japanese kimono designs similarly reflect the rich layering of history through the depiction of floral motifs as dynamic figurative and stylised patterns.

As a contemporary jeweller I intend my work to be worn, loved and used and consider this aspect an important step in the design process. I hope that my pieces are valued as they pass from the hand of the creator to the owner, adding new layers of meaning and interpretation.”  - Julie Blyfield

SCHMUCK 2013 – Munich (DE) – PROGRAMME – 6-12 Mars 2013

SCHMUCK is an international jewellery competition which is staged every year in March as part of the Internationale Handwerksmesse. For over fifty years SCHMUCK has been the jewellery sector´s premier exhibition. From among the many applications received from designers to exhibit in SCHMUCK, a single juror makes his or her own personal selection of those whose work will be presented. This juror is generally an international curator and expert in contemporary jewellery design. In 2006 the Danner Foundation took over as patron of the exhibition. The organiser is the Handwerkskammer für München und Oberbayern (Chamber of Trades and Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria), and the venue host is the Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH.

Organized by the Verein zur Förderung des Handwerks e.V.
Willy Brandt Allee 1, 81829 München, Germany

EXPO ‘Second nature’ – Gallery Funaki, Melbourne (AU) – 5 Fevr.-2 Mars 2013

second nature -   Julie Blyfield

« second nature, n.
An acquired behavior or trait that is so long practiced as to seem innate. »

Julie Blyfield 'Folded Leaf' neckpiece, 2012 / sterling silver Julie Blyfield ‘Folded Leaf’ neckpiece, 2012 / sterling silver

Working from one day to the next I focus my attention on observations from nature and working with an ephemeral resource. Using the skills, materials and techniques that are second nature to my practice, I wanted to see where my work would lead as the year progressed. Inspired from things that I observe in the garden or sight on my daily walks, visits to new and different places, observing the change of seasons, altering colours and senses, a visit to Japan and experiencing different mindsets. As the year progresses forms emerge, beginning with loose marks and sketches until paper maquettes evolve and the urgency to translate and make begins, decisions are made, altered and resolved. Materials are selected and ordered. The process repeats over and over, echoing nature’s cycles and repetition. A new beginning is waiting for me and my work.”  Julie Blyfield, 2013

These include sculptural pieces that will either be hung on the wall or suspended from the Gallery ceiling.
Adelaide Central School of Art Inc (ACSA) is an independent, not-for-profit, accredited Higher Education Provider that provides intensive training for students looking to develop a career as a practising artist. The ACSA Gallery is an integral part of the school’s teaching program.

« Every Christmas we head down to Kangaroo Island to relax, swim and wind down at the end of the year. So I decided that I would base a new collection of work on the coastal plants collected from beach walks and plants of the sea. I didn’t really want the work to be a literal translation of what I collected or photographed but rather reflect the ‘feel ‘ of the coastal vegetation and the colours of the locations.«

« The exhibition reflects 20 years of my practice from 1990 – 2010 so it encompasses personal responses to my own family history and reflections on Adelaide’s history when I worked as a volunteer on a local achaealogical dig in the old market area by East Terrace.
It also looks at the history of jewellery, specifically focusing on the work from the 1850′s in the Victorian Era.
The exhibition shows my passion for gardening and interest in Museums and collections where I made work inspired from an old album of pressed plants collected in the desert around 1900. This album is now housed in the South Australian Museum Archives. » (thanks to JamFactory blog !)

« I use the technique of ‘chasing’ which is a process where annealed silver metal is supported in ‘pitch’ (bituminous material) I hammer to texture my silver sheet with small steel tools before soldering. In commencing my work I often photograph, sketch and make paper maquettes to assist me in making decisions about the forms and designs I will make. In this way I can be free to cut, paste, staple paper together quite quickly and spontaneously to resolve the design process and avoid wasting expensive materials. I always recycle as much as possible in my making process.«
